I'll explain some of the older answers for those interested:

一 ∶自小灵慧最偏怜，深山独长海中珍，自从平地起双木，君为辟邪妾为君。

Yue Ling Shan [岳灵珊]
Don't know the first two lines, but the last two makes it obvious.
'自从平地起双木' means ever since 'twin wood' rose from 'flat ground'. The character for 'wood' is '木' (mu), so 'twin wood' is '林'(lin). 'Flat' is '平'(ping). So put them together and you can make out '林平之' (lin ping zhi).

'君为辟邪妾为君', this means the gentleman learns 'pixie' (the sword skill that has castration as a requirement), so the lady becomes the man instead. Probably just a dig at Lin Pingzhi being less manly than even his wife, Yue Lingshan.


四 ∶琴棋书画称风雅，旷世绝功身潇洒，风吹梅落蘅芷去，途留芙蓉对桃花。

Huang Yao Shi[黄药师]
'琴棋书画称风雅' suggests that this person is skilled in zither, chess, literature and art.
'旷世绝功身潇洒' suggests that this person is highly skilled in martial arts.
'风吹梅落蘅芷去' don't really know what this means. I think it means this person comes and goes gracefully, like plums falling when the wind blows...
'途留芙蓉对桃花' this is the dead giveaway. It means this person leaves Fu (Guo Fu) and Rong (Huang Rong) to face the Peach Blossoms.


十 五∶出生不知父母谁，生长禅房无是非，忽成孤孽遭奇遇，梦中相会终不悔。

Xu Zhu [虚竹]
'出生不知父母谁' - 'From birth he does not know who his parents are'
'生长禅房无是非' - 'Grew up in a Zen room, without lies and deceit'
'忽成孤孽遭奇遇' - 'Suddenly became 'gu nie' (orphaned devil??), has a wonderous encounter'
'梦中相会终不悔' - 'A meeting in a dream that he will not regret'


十 七∶宫中人畏奉大仙，林中巧遇徒忠贤，神龙见首不见尾，浩然之气震人间。

Northern Beggar [北丐 洪七]
'宫中人畏奉大仙' - 'In the palace he is feared by people, gifts to the fairy'. I totally butchered this translation. The idea is that he is feared in the royal palace.
'林中巧遇徒忠贤' - 'A chance encounter in the forest with his virtuous disciples'. Most likely his encounter with GJ + HR, who would later become his disciples.
'神龙见首不见尾' - 'The divine dragaon, its head can be seen, but not its tail'. This phrase could be used to describe a lot of characters, but it was specifically used to describe Hong Qi several times.
'浩然之气震人间' - 'His heroic nature trembles the world of men'

As for whether or not the answers are correct, well thats part of the fun
Besides the answers are quite distinct, so if you find another riddle that explains a character better, than the first answer was probably wrong.

I thought the riddles were pretty well written. It'll be good if someone can translate these riddles so more can join in, though a lot will be lost in translation.

五 ∶旭日东升天下闻，葵花灿灿断人魂，彩绣鸳鸯戏莲池，但愿此身是娥眉。- Dong Fang Bu Bai[东方不败]

旭日东升天下闻 - something about rising sun from the east that everyone know. East = dong fang. I think the verse means Dong Fang's reputation is very well-known.

葵花灿灿断人魂 - sunflower shine bright snatches people's soul - obviously talking about the powerful martial art in Sunflower Scroll.

彩绣鸳鸯戏莲池 - embrodering mandarin duck on lotus pond - after learning Sunflower Scroll, DFBB became feminine and just like to embroider. His lover's name is also Lin (same sound as lotus) something.,

但愿此身是娥眉。- hope that this body is female - after learning Sunflower Scroll, DFBB always hope he's a woman. He told RYY how he envy her being a female.

绛花枝头大漠扬 - something about dessert - CJL did went to the dessert and he met HQT's tribe there.
有眼无珠巾帼伤 - have eyes but no pupil, thus cause hurt to a girl - because CJL mistaken Lee Yuan Ji for a guy, he didn't know/recipocrate HQT's love for him, thus hurting HQT.
忍为江山舍美人 - because of 'Jiang Shan' gave up beauty - this obviously refers to CJL giving up Princess Frangrance to Emperor Qian Long.
壮志未酬死红妆。- aspiration still has not achieve but beauty dies - CJL never succeeded in 'overturning the Qing reviving the Ming' but Princess Fragrance already dead.

蓬门碧玉禀花颜 - something about jade and beautiful face - ??
王孙壮士喜相见 - royal grandchild meet warrior (happy mood) -??
血口咬人豺狼性 - bloody mouth bite people like a wolf
一代豪侠蒙奇冤 - a great hero suffers strange injustice

The reason I guess Yuan Chong Huan is because of the last 2 lines. YCH was accused wrongly of treason and sentence to death by slicing. While he was transfered to the execution center, some commoners, thinking that he really was a traitor bit off his flesh from his body.

天纵英明念苍生 - intelligent and wise, caring for the lives of the world
弱冠智谋理乱臣 - something about corrupt/rebelling official and wits.
纯孝仁康後称圣 - known by later generations as a filial person
永留千秋万世名 - name is left for thousand autumn and 10,000 generations

The only characters that will 永留千秋万世名 must be a real life person. This riddle seems to describe Yue Fei too since he was known to be a filial son and he cared for his countrymen. His name is also 永留千秋万世. But then this guy never actually appears in any JY novel, only his book does. So, I choose Kang Xi who has wits and also a good Emperor [天纵英明念苍生]. In DOMD he was also shown to be very filial to the old Emperor. The 3rd phrase also has his name 康 in it. His name certainly is 永留千秋万世.

sounds like Ding Dian [丁典] but not sure.

行侠竟蒙怀璧罪 - something about a a heroic person (a 'xia') being framed for some crime.
怜花却累花容毁 - cause (lian lei) pity flower to disfigure her beautiful face.
秋蕙凌波离尘去 - ?? don't understand this phrase. something about autumn orchid leave the ashes
身死成灰永相随 - body died became ashes and forever accompanying (you)

Because he possessed Liang Cheng Jue, Ding Dian was imprisoned for many years by a minister, Ling Tui Si, who wanted to know the secret of the LCJ. Ding Dian and LTS's daughter Ling Shuang Hua were lovers. LTS forces LSH to marry someone else. LSH refused and disfigured herself so that groom won't want her. She later died. Ding Dian later escaped but got poisoned by LTS. Before he died, he asked Di Yun to bring his body back to LSH so that they can be buried together. Because Di Yun was being hunted by the minister, he couldn't carry the dead body around, so he cremated Ding Dian's body and later brought it back to be buried together with LSH.

Guo Xiang [郭襄]
'苹身寻鹏走天涯' - i think there might be an error with the word '苹身'(ping sheng). If the word is '平生' (ping shen), then it means 'To walk the ends of the world for a lifetime searching for a large bird [鹏]'. GX spend a few years looking for YG.
'家毁国亡骨肉杀' - Family is ruined, country is destroyed, flesh and blood is killed'. During GX's time, her family died at Xiangyang, and China was lost to Mongolians.
'芙蓉无色心顿悟' - Fu Rong loses its color, and the heart suddenly awakens. Fu rong [芙蓉] is a type of flower, or it could be a play on the names Guo Fu [郭芙] and Huang Rong [黄蓉].
'金顶佛光成大家' - Don't really know this one. '金顶佛光' translates as 'golden crown and Buddha's halo', so probably something to do with Buddhism or religion.

'成大家' literally means 'becomes everyone'. '成家' also means 'to start a family' or 'to become a professional'. So '大' (big) means to create a large family, probably referring to Guo Xiang founding Emei Sect.



八十五∶火化恩师少年哀，勇退强敌竟成灾，无边荒山远远去，不尽棒喝句句来。
岩穴练气常忍饥，山洞苦思猛豁然，以柔刻刚悟真理，冲虚圆通千古怀。

'火化恩师少年哀' - 'The teacher is cremated, a youngster is in sorrow'. ZSF was present when his teacher Jue Yuan died on him.
'勇退强敌竟成灾' - 'To repel a strong enemy only to result in disaster'. ZSF fought He Zu Dao when he went to challenge Shaolin. Because of that, he was accused of learning martial arts without permission.
'无边荒山远远去' - 'To journey far away into the limitless wasteland'. ZSF didn't take up Guo Xiang's offer to stay with her parents at Xiangyang. I reckon he went into hiding.
'不尽棒喝句句来' - I really have no idea what this means...
'岩穴练气常忍饥' - 'To cultivate Qi in a cave, often enduring hunger'
'山洞苦思猛豁然' - Something about meditating in a cave
'以柔刻刚悟真理' - '以柔刻刚' means to counter hardness with gentleness, often used to describe martial arts like Taichi, Judo etc. '悟真理' means 'to awaken to the Truth'.
'冲虚圆通千古怀' - I'm lost...

众叛亲离为祖宗 - go against by the populace left family (i.e. became alone) because of ancestor - MRF did a lot of unethical things in order to reestablish the Yin Dynasty, causing him at the end to be alone with only 1 maid.
江山想像痴魂里 - imagine 'jiang shan' in a crazy state/mind - MRF loses his mind at the end
玉殿虚无荒野中 - in the wilderness the throne is false - in his crazy state he imagines himself as the emperor.

巍峨北山震神州 - majestic and towering north mountain shakes the divine land (shen zhou) - Xiao Feng is from the north and has a very imposing figure, reputed to be very powerful.
造化弄人身世惆 - fate played tricks and identity caused distress/sadness - XF who has always thought himself a Han is revealed to be a Khitan and this identity causes him a lot of trouble and sadness.
红消香榭错已铸 - sweet pavilion vanished wrong/mistake is done - this is obviously about Ah Zhu's death under XF's hand
胡汉相争何日休 - when will the battle between 'Hu' and 'Han' stop? - about XF trying to stop the war between Liao (Hu) and Song (Han).
