South Emperor's surname Duan, given name Zhixing, was a real person in history. He ruled the Kingdom of Dali from 1172 to 1199.

In the history, many emperors of Dali became monks, but Duan Zhixing was not among them, he died of illness in 1199. But the novel says Duan Zhixing not real died in 1199 (Guo Jing borned in November 1200), but became a monk and lived out of the world. So the novel exactly matches the real history.

Just my 2 cents:

IcyFox had translated no 11 as "He mistook it for a threat." but I changed it because that was my understanding of the sentence. Honestly, I might be wrong, so perhaps Athena or someone else would be willing to be our arbitrator.

The word 'huangye' is best translated as 'emperor', and 'wang' is 'king'. I think when Jin Yong wrote it, what he had in mind was how other people would address him. It is true that China had an emperor, but remember that Dali was not under China at that time. It was a sovereign country on its own. So I believe the term Emperor Duan, although historically might be incorrect, but in light of what Jin Yong had in mind, it is correct. Remember that we are translating a novel here, not a historical fact.
