Not for jokes, but this is seriously what I think. Because XLN is describes as a "fairy", I can presume that her mother is also beutiful because of genetic reasons. Now, this leaves me with 2 choices left. 1) Her mother was too beautiful and got raped. Gave the child up. 2)The faimly was too poor to support XLN and had to give her up.

I honestly think 1 is the more clear choice.

One explanation could be that Daoism was said to be rather liberal when it comes to sex, and even understood it to be an important part of a healthy life. There's also the idea of the ying and yang complementing each other during intercourse and etc. etc. Examples of 男女雙修 (sexual healing ) abounds in some wuxia books, such as those of Huang Yi's. So in a Daoist sect even though the practitioners may be celibate they may still have access to the know-how...

Remember that YG lived on his own for a long time as basically a street urchine. Kids usually grow up fast in those situations.

I dont think YG knows anything. He only got his first "awakening of lust" with LWS

Yeah... That could be... and now that you think about it, that scenerio is one of the more likely ones.... STUPID RAPISTS!! Ugh... But that does bring up the question of why Xiao Long Nu didn't get pregnant... Maybe she's barren? But let's not go into details as this thread will be closed.

the 1st senario is well, the same thing happened to the daughter and now the mum too? it couldn't be that tragic right...

I'm more inclined to picture her family (must be a reputable martial arts clan and had the good genes - daddy and mummy) was under the attack of some enemies (it is always so easy to make enemies in the pugilist world) and they were escaping from the enemies and nearby was Mt. Zhong Nan... fearing for the safety of the baby's life and thinking either they could always come back for her in the future or they could die, they left her near Chong Yang shrine, hoping someone will take care/protect her. But in the end... the whole family was masscared and nobody would ever know the identity of the baby. How interesting it would be if Xiao Long Nu was to find out if she is the only living descendant of a reputable martial arts family.

Maybe she was hatched out of an egg which a dragon had laid on the top of the Tomb, and thus she was named Little Dragon Girl by her master.

Probably she was born from royalty and the mother had an affair and had to leave her somewhere. That might explain her exceptional beauty, since being born from a really poor family that had no money to feed wouldn't explain how she became so goddess-looking.

No... don't you remember the Yang girl who appeared in HSDS to teach ZZR a lesson? She's presumed to be the descendant of YG and XLN, after all.

    wikipedia:
Xiaolongnü's name (literally "Little Dragon Maiden") is based on the year she was born, the Year of the Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac.

is it ever stated that she borns in the year of dragon in the novel? i dont remember that statement.

One aspect I like the most about XLN is she give no f**k about her origins and don't even care who is her parents, unlike other wuxia characters, constantly obsess about it. I won't say this is a good quality but it makes a difference, completely opposite from YG. Maybe that is why I really like about this couple, they're nothing alike (like water and fire) but they try their best to compromise to please each other.

I don't think Jin Yong meant her to be a truly realistic character; she's more of a symbol.

There is not a single word in the novel that describes XLN as a fairy and that bs entirely come from people watching the drama or how the director wanted it to be and I really hate it. She is so simple/plain in the novel but they tried to make her act like a princess in 2006 version.

You can say YG is actually purer than XLN at least about sex. When XLN told YG and everyone that she was raped, YG has no reaction, like he doesn't even know what rape is?!?!?

I think it's more about what martial arts she learned from her sect. Same as LMC.

No. She only says she was named "Long" by her master, no question asked after that.

OMG! i myself always think that she was described as a fairy in the novel , even though i read novel . i think most of people here also assume that too , looks like you are the only one who realize that she never desribed as fairy in the novel , bravo to you.

I was the same as many people, watched all of these dramas first (83, 95, 98, 2006, 2014) and read the novel the first time in 2017 (a little late ) and kind of surprised that after so many adaptations, NONE of them is actually faithful to the novel imo, so I hope the 2020 version will do better (doesn't look like it have the gigantic budget of the 2006 version, so no hope for the actions scenes).

While most characters ride horses, YJ deliberately let XLN ride donkey to travel long distance and she seems to enjoy it (lol), doesn't really look fairy like, and of course the donkey was replaced by horse in the dramas in order to keep the image, I guess .

Imo, the best adaptation of XLN character are the Singaporean comic and the seasons 1's 2001 anime. Hopefully future adaptations can learn a thing or two from this instead of keeping doing disservice to the original novel.
