True, GJ had Hua Zhen and Tuo Lei, but the type of friendship GJ had with HR was a more carefree, 'be yourself' dynamic. GJ's upbringing involved many parent/peers that tried to dictate how his life was to be lived. When GJ met HR, she encouraged him to 'live life'. That mutual permission to 'be the happiest you can be' I think was the start of a beautiful relationship. I think romance at the start would be a bit premature because both kids had to just enjoy each other's company first before getting to the 'I die for you, you die for me' stage.
Also, there's one thing that struck me though - how come YK/MNC had so much money problems during their travels that they had to do street performances to raise money to pay for their food, board and lodging expenses, while HG/HR didn't have to deal with trying to scrape out a living?

HR had spent a significant time living as a beggar after running away from home (I think this played a part in how convincing she would be as the leader of the Beggar Clan - she truly grasped the spirit of being a beggar). She had the smarts to win mega bucks from gambling establishments, or just steal (her qinggong was supposed to be really good - no adaptation sort of notes this). GJ being brought up in a nomadic culture, shouldn't have been too fussed to camp. He would've been a fabulous hunter for both of them.
YK and MNC. YK had the potential to do lots. Very few people (especially in times of turmoil) could afford or bother with an education. Everything was about survival. With the princely upbringing YK had, he could have offered administration services (e.g. helped to write letters, tutored). He could've read and learnt some basic medicine - which could've served many people. It's about proactivity and creativity. Either YK didn't have any, or he only used it if it served his own pride/purposes.
One could argue WYHL created 'obstacles' to force YK back to him. I don't buy that, if YK has truly dedicated, he wouldn't give in. Donald Trump never does!
Laisee, I think you were the one asking about the 4 social classes of Imperial China? They were:
Shi - Gentry scholars
Nong - Peasant and farmers
Gong - Artisans and craftsmen
Shang - Merchants and traders
Mind you, the respect accorded to such classes varied according to certain parts of history. I think there was a merging of the Shi and Shang (think Medici) around Eastern Jin times. Money was valued during war times, and merchants usually had it. I can say though, that the Shi class/position has enjoyed consistent respect - probably due to Confucian influences. A practical reason - a stark difference to Feudalism I think - is that, being educated gave one opportunity to sit for national exams, become a member of civil administration or join a scholarly college, thereby, tangibly raising the socio-economic prospects of you and your entire family. A ticket to a better life.
Interestingly, HR may've been considered part of a Shi family. Her father, despite being a Wulin peer, would've been considered an unorthodox elite literati, in that he excelled in scholarly arts, understood Wuxing (suppose the mathematics of our times). The fact that he also excelled in martial arts would've made him Wen Wu Shuang Chuan (Complete Scholar and Warrior) aka perfect individual. HR's mother was also of a scholarly family - she being even a more outstanding scholar than HYS it seemed. Take that, with the fact that GJ was rather slow (definitely not scholar material), displayed mannerism of a barbarian (Han considered anything outside the Great Walls as barbaric/uncivilized), AND had been betrothed when he had asked for HR hand in marriage, well, I can understand HYS for raising his nose to GJ. I actually think HYS didn't really start to admire GJ until he was seeking him out for revenge (I thought he was positively delighted that GJ was showing some guts). HYS is so wacky.
But Anthony Wong as HYS was so cool! In many respects, I think him as good and sometimes, even better than Shek Sau as HYS. His grand entrance was swoon-worthy.
^^ Thanks for posting all these stills. Makes me wanna go watch it again, for like the 5th time. =)

Opsy! Yes, it is Yang Kang.![]()
Although this series came out in 2008 but I still watch it 1-2 a year. I'll admit I didn't like Ariel much but after watching her in this series my impression of her changed. Hu Ge was excellent and handsome like usual. Really hope to see Hu Ge and Ariel film another series.![]()
