The actor who played the villain is Thomas Jo Fai Lam (林祖輝 in Chinese).

I can't help you with the second question, sorry.

Cao Hung (Lam Cho Fei) could not act at all in this series. I think he was trying to hard to look evil and so when he spoke with his facial expressions and all...it looks like he's constipated and trying to force the words out (in order to look mischievous and evil). As for his character, he's so perverted or something, he looks perversely at all the beautiful girls in the series.

Strawberry? WTH? What kind of name is that? She looks like Shu Qi. I never really liked her character, Li Qing Lian. Her character is like a crybaby and she's super gullible to believe Cao Hung. Fei Feng and Jade Flute Girl is still less annoying than Qing Lian.

I wish Eric Wan was the main lead. I don't really like Anthony Tang Ho Kwong. He doesn't have the face of a lead. I guess I'm used to seeing him in TVB series where he plays supporting or smaller roles.

It's been a long time since I watched this drama. Rewatching it brings back memories. I do like the music and how girls used to play zithers and the music used to be good...not like how TVB does their wuxia dramas these days.

CrazyT mentioned how Ma Kwan Mo's character reminded him of Linghu Chong and I do see the resemblances. He goes off and meet people who aren't part of the orthodox sects and get kicked out of his school by his shifu. Even earlier in the series when he gets punished and sent off to spend time and the self-reflection place in the mountains seem like what happen to LHC too.

It seem this drama or the novel it's based on, it seem to borrow some of the terminology from Jin Yong and other wuxia novelists' novels.

Default And the DVD follow up

Ok I got the DVDs as of last week actually. Packaging wise, they look homemade with 3 episodes / disk. If you're expecting fancy packaging, look elsewhere (no DVD menu either)

so going through the first 1-3 dvd's they aren't bad. Definitely VHS transfers onto DVDs, but heck, if you're desperate, they're not bad. In fact, they're a bit like the laser disk (remember that dinosaur) -> VHS -> DVD type quality I used to watch.

    And they're in CANTONESE.

Not necessarily. It could be the other way around. Check out this post in wuxiasociety.

It seems that his novel Feiyan Jinglong (飛燕驚龍)(Flying Swallow Startled Dragon) was the first wuxia novel to introduce a two concepts that later became central to many writers works:

    1. The setting in which there are nine major schools, namely: Huashan, Wudang, Shaoling, Emei, Kunlun, Qingcheng, Diancang, Xueshan and Kongtong.

    2. The plot device of a sinister character seeking to forcibly unite all of the Jianghu.

At least as far as plot devices go, Wo Longsheng deserves some recognition for his influence as well.

I am not talking about the different schools.

    For example:

What about the "Passionless Valley" in which Nan Xiao Die's mother was buried in?
Xiao Die's Zither attack technique that seem reminence of The Six-finger Demon/ghost zither.

Sun Fei Fang's father had a escort agency called The Heavenly Dragon Escort Agency, didn't the escort agency in HSDS, which was owned by the secular students of Shaolin, used the same or similar name for their agency?

I think there is more. So are you saying these are influences from this author?

These authors are all contemporaries. They wrote wuxia novels around the same period and might influence one another. HSDS was written after 'Fei Yan Jing Long' (Mythical Crane is the revised version of Fei Yan) and Jin Yong also keep changing some of the terms in his novels with each revision. We might not really know which come first unless we read all these books. I just want to bring this up because
it seem to borrow some of the terminology from Jin Yong and other wuxia novelists' novels.
sounds like only Wo Long Sheng is doing all the borrowing and copying. Why is only Wo Long Sheng doing the borrowing when he is a contemporary of Jin Yong, Gu Long, Ni Kuang (author of 'The Six-finger Demon') etc?

Just want to give WLS some credit. Just because Jin Yong and the other novelists are more famous doesn't mean they are the originators of all the similar terms used.

    Thumbs down

After hearing all the praises, I decided to watch this series. I have to say, it is one of the crappiest ancient series I've seen (since I still have high expectations for this type of series made during the early 90's). The storyline is so fake and unbelievable, and all the characters are either downright annoying or downright stupid. There is no in between.

Everyone was just too stupid. EVERYONE (except maybe Bach Van Phi) believes EVERYTHING any other person tells them. It was unbelievable. There are many examples, but one that stood out: Phi Phung thinking that the main guy has killed her father. I mean WTF? She KNOWS the evil guy was evil and conniving, and yet, she believes him?

Everyone was so dumb, it was just unreal.

On the storyline: The charaters' stupidity made the storyline stupid.

Ahh, never knew this was a series. Is this the same storyline as the "Magic Crane"? Its a movie staring Tony Leung, Anita Mui, and Rosamud Kwan.

Both are based on the same novel.

why was pollyanna03 banned after the first post? is she/he a fake?

And also for once i see someone giving credit to Wo Long Sheng...just because the guys story isn't as deep or meaningful or fun loving are epic or has extreamly likable characters or weird characters...doesn't mean we should strip him of his credits...i whole heartly believe his novels set a skeleton to other novels.

also gives them an idea of what not to write. ^_^

he also created on of my most favorite characters of all time...Bach Van Phi.

If only they remade it with a more interesting cast and changed the story a bit...I would willingly live through all those annoying characters to watch BVP again.

If it was a China production...i wonder who they would choose to act as the characters.
Currently in love with Bae Suzy...for superficial reasons.

I just recently finished watching this series. I love the theme song! Despite the consensus here that Lee Ching Luen (the female lead character) is annoying, I actually find her tolerable and sometimes likable. Come on, she's not that bad, is she? She's pretty gullible, but that is because she grew up very sheltered from the evils of the martial arts world. Plus, she's not exactly stupid; she's simply naive and too trusting. Although, I did grit my teeth when she kept placing her trust, time and again, in Cho Hung (the villain). Maybe as viewer, I could see how evil Cho Hung was, but the character Ching Luen could not because he always feigned kindness in front of her, chivalrously helping her "avenge" her parents' deaths. I actually felt sorry for her

I don't really care if some think this series is crap (no offense), it introduced me to Mak Lai Hung and much of her series after these that I watched are priceless hahaha (could tell I'm quite a fan of hers, right?).

I remember watching this series as a child, and I love the themesong by Sally Yeh! The actresses in this series were really pretty but the main actor is an extra in TVB series now. I always find it weird/sad that top ATV actors would accept such low roles from TVB, like Gilbert Lam.

Also, ATV used to make some really good ancient kung fu series. Too bad ATV does not seem to be make more series like this one these days...

The themesong and subtheme songs are all sung by Frances Yip not Sally Yeh.

To be fair, her father and Ma Junwu were enver best of friends, and Su Panghai only really repented of his doings while in that monastery. It was very conceivable that Ma would not know he HAD repented. Secondly, Su, with his dying breath, pointed at Ma.. it could easily have been misinterpreted as an accusing finger.

But yes, a lot of people were very naive, especially Li Qinglian. I kept wondering when she would die like Yue Lingshan did, but surprisingly she not only survived, but got the man. I guess she matched him the most in terms of IQ - Bai Yunfei, Nan Xiaodie and Su Feifeng should really look elsewhere for men who were worthy of them. =)
