Yeah, i followed cricket and watched it at times.

Not that good at it. Had some painful memories of a cricket ball that went past my defences and enter the crucial region, causing me a painful painful time.

yep I love it... its the best sport for me
all rounder.. primarily opening bowler though.. made it to the 2nd XI with leg spin but I prefer fast bowling .. highest score was 115... hehe I bate at about 3-6 and either open the bowling or bowl first change.

i've stopped following cricket because Australia has no decent competitors.
it was a good thing England won back the Ashes last year. the victory this year will be that much sweeter for Australia

Shane Bond for sure... but thats about it lol..
I reckon a fullstrength side of england is still better than australia atm, and pakistan if they can bat better and have shoaib akhtar, mohammed asif open the bowling in full flight... also india is on the rebuild...
while the aussie players are on the road to retirement, barring clarke, bracken, hussey(hes 30) to a degree.
warnes like nearly 37 mcgrath is 35-6 gilespies 31 etc...

Righto, cricket world cup this year!!! Wouldn't mind starting a discussion as we (the few of us on this forum) follow the exciting journey to the finals (fingers crossed it will NZ vs SA).

Already the competition is filled with drama. First Pakistan is out of the race, after two losses to hosts and Ireland (!!), while India needs to defeat the in-form Sri Lanka to get through, after losing to their small (and younger) neighbours Bangladesh. Then the death of the Pakistan coach - originally rumoured to die of stress or heart attack (but there's vomit and blood on the walls). Now it looks like the coach was murdered, poisoned or sufficated?

Would like to hear your thoughts about this world cup.

    He was murdered. http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/wc20...ry/286794.html

Well, India is out of the world cup as well - it's almost like losing Brazil and Argentina out of the soccer's first round. There's already been talks of decreased viewers and revenue from their large fan base.

Moving on: Australia, South Africa, West Indies, Ireland, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are through to the next round robin. Given Ireland and Bangladesh should be easy beats (though they can really throw in more chaos if they beat a few of the big nations), the teams that topped their pool have a sizable advantage over seconds. Australia and Sri Lanka should get through, and South Africa looks to knock out either the pool topping WI or NZ to reach the semis after their defeat to Australia.

I am hoping to see NZ, Aus, SA and SL into the semis.

The murder really casted a dark cloud over the celebration of the shorter form of the game, even to the point of calls to terminate the cup. It looks like the coach was poisoned then strangulated by someone he knows. Rumours of game fixers, obsessive fans, rows with players, all suggested to be the likely cause.

Yes, somewhat remote, now that Aus beat SA, NZ didn't dispatch Canada that comfortably (albeit our bowlers were rested), NZ lost one of their openers and SL is looking in hot form. Will be sad if its SL vs AUS

do u have Foxtel or something?
it sux0rs that popular sports are commercialised. free tv don't get the privilege to show these sporting events.

well i think the whole world cup has gone sour due to the murder! when it comes to cricket, i think the Indians and Pakistani are the more rabid fanatical fans!!!!
it will make a 'white' coach to think twice accepting a coaching position in Indian and Pakistan!

The Brazil and Argentina of cricket is Australia and South Africa. India is more like the Spain of World Cup- always promises more than it can deliver.

Btw, Foxtel suxor, i haven't even watched any live game yet.

Well I was talking about follower wise, as in both Brazil and India are dominated by their respective sports and are decently good at it (in case you bring China in for soccer), Arg and Pak just happens to be next to them. But yeah both teams don't really perform to their expectations.

There's a live game tonight at 11.30 Aus vs WI. Your picks?

I hope Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies, England or South Africa win it. Anyone but Australia. They're a great team, and virtually all are good blokes, with a true gentleman as captain, but there's a certain amount of boredom watching them win yet again.

Sri Lanka's Jayawardene deserves something for being such an inspirational captain, and it would be nice for Jayasuriya to end his career on a high note having entertained all of us for so long. Muralitharan is also a great bowler, although Warne-worshipping Australians have never accepted him as legitimate. New Zealand has improved a lot recently, and after coming so close in 1992 (all the more special because they just lost Hadlee) it would be nice for them to get their first taste of World Cup victory. West Indies are really really due a revival of sorts now - they were the first team I watched against England in 1991, and they really inspired me.. it's so.. sad, now, that I really want them to win, but I can't really see it happening. England most likely don't deserve it, but Pietersen has brought so much new life to the English game, and it's always inspiring to watch Collingwood show that even with mediocre talent, you can succeed at the highest level with a lot of hard work and determination. I also have immense sympathy for South Africa after watching them lose to Australia two World Cups ago when they should have knocked them out for good. I also watched them lose to England in 1992 due to stupid rain-rules, and they also suffered in the last World Cup due to rain rules. About time they got a good break.

    Anyone but Australia.

I don't want England to win it, and I'm speaking as an England supporter.

It was their fault they tried to take advantage of those stupid rain rules in the first place. It only became a 45 over match because they deliberately slowed things down to deny England the slog period.

You obviously haven't seen how devastating Mr. Bond has been against Australia.
Especially back when he didn't have so many stress fractures in his fragile back.
His 5 for 25 and 6 for 23 were just scintillating.
The 5r for 25 was the best Australia day for me... especially how he bowled Gilchrist with that waqar younis like yorker at superior pace. And remember the recent awesomeness he showed by demolishing Australia in the Chappell-Hadlee trophy, simply marvelous.
The guy averages 19 in odi format... thats unfacting believable considering the size of grounds, boundary lines and bats these days.
He is truly a legend, if it weren't for his countless injuries, I'm sure he would've been hailed as one of the greatests...
Loved the way how he ended Steve Waugh's one career and fast-forwarded Mark Waughs retirement.

Anyways, it looks like to me South Africa is a shite one dimensional team especically with their absurdly metronomic attack, no express pace.
Sri Lanka is my fave team, so I wish them well... everytime Jayasuriya fires, SRL win so I'm hoping Ceylon can hold the world cup again.
NZ look quite brilliant, hopefully they can make the finals... with Bond, Styris, Oram , Fleming, Vettori and McCullum firing, they are competitive as hell.
And finally Aus... hopefully they get booted out ASAP, hate watching them... just hate them.

    Strife out.

Bangladesh topples another favourite - this time ranked one South Africa, winning by 67 runs!!!

Now the last semi-final spot is up for grabs - WI and England have a slightly better chance.
