He doesn't seem to have done that many wuxia series, though.
I found a whole bunch of YouTube clips of The Last Concubine, but couldn't find any with him in them.
If you search by his name on YouTube you get dozens of LOCH clips. I think someone posted the entire series one clip at a time! lol

Ok it's been 7-8 years since the release of Xiao Ao Jiang Hu 2001 and XAJH still ranks as the best wuxia series in the 2000's. I haven't seen any wuxia series in the 2000's that has surpassed it yet in overall quality (fight scenes, cast, scenery, filmography, special effects, story, music etc.). Anybody else feel this way?
i agree!
the cast is superb (great chemistry), scenery and fight scenes are amazing, and the whole series just gives off a really genuine feel. its as if you're right there with the characters! this series was the first real wuxia series i've watched and its still the best ive seen![]()
Well I'm obsessed with this series. I watch it over and over. So I'd have to agree. I like other series, but none of them click with me the way this one does, for all the reasons you state. And the more I watch it the more I appreciate that even though they weren't completely faithful to the novel, they always had the novel in mind when they were working on the script. The changes they made were mostly to things that wouldn't have worked well on television.
I think part of the immediacy is because it was shot on video, not film. I showed a couple of episodes to some friends and one of them made that comment right away.

Yes the series is awesome. I grew up watching the series in the 80's and 90's but XAJH was the first time seeing a series that looks realistic (almost movie quality).
It isn't too faithful to the novel but series is good on its own merit. It was the pioneer of realistic-looking high production wuxia series. It literally felt like i was watching a feature length movie that lasted for 25+ hours. The scenes when YBQ learned Pixie was downright creepy. I never seen any other SOD portray those scenes that way. It adds to the overall heavy atmosphere of the series.
You can tell just by the way it looks that it's video and not film. Video just has a more immediate feel than film. The camera is usually closer, and they used a lot of steadicam shots to make it even more immediate. I don't know how to explain it, but video just feels different from film.

Did you notice that he didn’t get his head shaved in either series even though the character in the books did..
He was supposed to have his head shaved when he became sect leader, just like the ladies. When he impersonated Yideng was the other time.
Are you getting XAJH and LOCH confused, James?
LHC doesn't have his head shaved to be like the Heng-Shan nuns. The Mute Granny (Yilin's mother) shaves his head to make him a monk, so he can marry Yilin. She also threatens to castrate him if he doesn't agree, which you'll notice that they chose to omit from the tv series.
I've seen Li Yapeng with his hair pretty short. It probably wouldn't be that bad shaved. But then I like him.![]()

she did say that she would castrate him if he didnt agree! i distinctly remember her saying that she would make him a eunuch if he didnt marry yilin. she gave him 2 options, either become a monk and marry yilin, or become a eunuch. lol. but i like that part of that episode! it was cute how he was tied up with yingying and they talked and everything
i think i only really liked liyapeng in this series, and it probably had something to do with the long hair. so i like it that he didnt shave anything, haha![]()
