HSDS: Original vs. Revised

I've flicked through the original HSDS novel recently. The storyline is largely
unchanged, though some of the fine detail is different. As far as I can see, a few
elements have been taken out of the revised version, but next to nothing has been
added. Some of the changes are:

1) The jade-faced fire monkey:

This creature has been edited out completely.

In the original, when Cheung Chui San and Yan So So first came to the cave they
later used as their home, they were attacked by a bear, which they promptly killed.
However, they were then pursued and eventually chased up a tree by a group of 13
angry bears! They were rescued by a cute-looking 3-foot tall monkey with blood-red
fur and a snow-white face. This monkey was the nemesis of bears - it liked eating
bear brains. It could tear a bear's head apart into two live and pull its brains out
in a blink. When it met CCS and YSS, it immediately did so (thinking that they were
its 'relatives') and offered the food to them. Not wanting to offend the monkey,
they ate it. It turned out to be quite tasty. [In the new edition, there were just
two bears, which they killed by themselves.]

The monkey was also immune to fire. When CCS came up with the idea of using the
active volcano as a source of fire, they couldn't get close enough for their tinder
to catch on fire. The monkey carried it for them all the way to the crater. Later
on, it danced around in the middle of their fire. [In the new edition, they simply
gave up on that scheme and used a flint with their sword instead]

The monkey was also Jer Sun's hunting partner for a while. However, it was TOO
efficient a hunter for bears, and after a while, Jer Sun insisted that the monkey
played with young Cheung Mo Gei instead since it was taking all the challenge away
from hunting.

The monkey was eventually poisoned to death by Doi Yi Si (the purple-clothed dragon
king/golden flower nanny).

2) The young Cheung Mo Gei

The younger Cheung Mo Gei in the old version strikes me as being generally less...
nice, and more crafty.

When Jer Sun told his tale in the old version, young CMG vowed to take revenge on
Sing Kwun on his behalf, saying that since Sing Kwun killed Jer Sun's whole family,
then he will kill Sing Kwun's entire family in return. This earned him a harsh
scolding from Cheung Chui San.

Whereas the young CMG in the revised version never wanted revenge for his parents'
death, the old young CMG DID. He carefully memorised his 'enemies' appearances,
actively asked Cheung 3 Fung to teach him martial arts so he could take his revenge,
and was reluctant to learn the Shaolin 9 Yang due to the role that the Shaolin monks
played in the tragedy.

3) 9 yang & 9 yin

In the old editions, both were written by Da Mo. They were of equal power, and
complemented each other, yet each was capable of countering the other. The inner
power of 9 yang was deeper than 9 yin, but lacked the strange moves (but those strange moves could not affect a high-level exponent of 9 yang inner power anyway).
Cheung 3 Fung apparently wasn't aware of 9 yin, but theorised its existence from the large gaps he saw in 9 yang. He developed his Tai Chi techniques in part to fill in the gaps.

However, the complementary nature of the 9 yin & 9 yang was contradicted later on when CMG tried to purge Chow Ji Yerk of the poison, and CMG said that the two clashed.

4) Hong Lung 18 Palms

In the new edition, when young CMG was grabbed by a beggar wielding a poisonous
snake, he was rescued by Yan So So providing a distraction (slapping CCS, tossing sailors overboard etc.) and Yu Lin Jau taking advantage of it. In the old edition, things played out considerably differently. CMG lashed out backwards with a palm, which struck the beggar in the back, paralysing him. Yu Lin Jau's attempts to free him left him screaming in pain. When questioned about the move he used, it turned
out to be 'Sun Lung Bai Mei' (mystical dragon swings its tail) from the 18 palms!
CMG's strike should have been fatal within two hours, but YLJ and CCS spent all night saving him. The beggar's martial arts were ruined though.

It turns out that CMG picked it up from Jer Sun, who picked it up from 'an old man'.
He only knew three moves (Sun Lung Bai Mei, Gin Lung Joi Tin [see the dragon in the fields] and Kong Lung Yau Fui [proud dragon has regrets]). When CMG sparred briefly with Cheung 3 Fung, C3F praised the first 2 moves as 'good', but the last one was 'bad'. Apparently, the man who taught Jer Sun didn't fully understand how to use the palms.

CMG used the palms extensively during his youth. In the revised edition, these were either cut out altogether or replaced with moves from 'Wudang Long Fist'.

At the beginning, the 18 palms were said to be lost since GJ had no talented successors except for Yeung Gor, who couldn't use the palms since he only had one arm. C3F also said the palms were lost when CMG asked him to teach him how to use the 'Kong Lung Yau Fui' properly. However, later on, we see the 'Tsuen Gung' elder
of the beggar's union using 12 palms...

5) The visit to Shaolin by C3F and Young CMG

A large chunk was cut out here in the revised novel, replaced by a paragraph saying that the Shaolin monks persisted in refusing to swap Shaolin 9 yang for Wudang 9 yang.

In the old version, the Shaolin monks were refusing, but then the leader of the Wu Shan union (the union that the snake-wielding beggar was part of) came along asking for Jer Sun's location from the monks. The monks pointed to Cheung Mo Gei, and in the confrontation, the leader attacked Cheung Mo Gei. With Cheung 3 Fung's assistance from behind, CMG sent the leader flying into the upper branches of a tree, knocked him free with a flicked stone, and caught him on the way down, setting him down on his feet only to slam back down on the ground again.

Impressed, the Shaolin monks agreed to trade Shaolin 9 yang in return for Wudang 9 yang AND the 13 Tai Chi stances. Furthermore, they made CMG vow not to teach anyone else or use it against Shaolin disciples. CMG was reluctant at first to such an obviously unfair trade since it would prevent him from taking revenge, but C3F
pointed out that he would die without taking revenge anyway if he didn't agree, and CMG also thought that he could easily use other martial arts to kill Shaolin disciples when the time came anyway.

CMG was sent to Yuen Chan (i.e. Sing Kwun), who was the only one who knew Shaolin 9
yang. Sing Kwun hid behind a veil, and recited the words of Shaolin 9 yang in a rapid gush, not expecting CMG to remember - but CMG had developed a photographic memory by memorising martial arts from Jer Sun. Surprised, Sing Kwun 'helped' CMG unblock his 'kei ging 8 mak' (8 extraordinary vessels) - this would normally be very beneficial, but by clearing them out, it also allowed the cold poison from the Yuen Ming palms to seep deep into his body. C3F later on wasn't sure whether it was accidental or malicious, but Wu Ching Gnow pointed out that an inner-power expert could easily sense the cold poison in his body, therefore it must have been a purely malicious act.

When finished, C3F had just finished writing, and handed it to the monks, who gave it to a young secular student of Hung Zhi's - this student turned out to be Chan Yau Leung! Chan Yau Leung looked over it, and proclaimed the martial arts to be Shaolin arts, reciting it from memory as 'evidence' - the Shaolin monks intended to deny
having learnt anything from Wudang! When the monks handed what he wrote back, C3F gave Hung Zhi a jolt, which sent him staggering back, sent Chan Yau Leung flying out of the 'ting' (gazebo?), and shredded the paper. Having witnessed the power of C3F's martial arts, the monks naturally hoped that Chan Yau Leung correctly remembered everything that was written!

6) Ending

In the old version, Chow Chi Yerk accompanied CMG to Wudang. There, C3F eventually
confronted her, pointing a sword directly at her, saying that he could not let Gwok Seung's legacy end so disasterously with the sect relying on the cruel martial arts that she so flamboyantly showed off earlier for supremacy. CCY in return asked CMG what sect he belonged to. CMG admitted that although he learnt martial arts from many different sources, he didn't really belong to any. Since it would not be violating any rules of the martial world, CCY asked him to take over as head of the Gnor Mei sect as well as the Ming cult, invoking her last wish. CMG eventually
agreed, receiving a martial-arts manual containing Gwok Seung's martial arts and the
two broken halves of the Heaven sword. CMG moved to Gnor Mei, sending a letter
abdicating from the head of the Ming cult, whilst CCY became a nun. The story ended with Jiu Ming invoking her last wish for CMG to outline her eyebrows, and CMG promising to do that for her every day from then on.

The revised ending had CMG leaving from Wudang, getting duped by Chu Yuen Cheung
into abdicating, then the request for eyebrow outlining. However, the story ended on a darker note, with CCY showing up, saying that she 'might think of a wish on the day of his wedding with Jiu Man'.

7) Miscellaneous

- 'Jiu Man' in the revised version was 'Jiu Ming' in the original
- Chow Ji Jerk was the daughter of the failed Ming cult revolutionary Chow Ji Wong in the original
- The 'Lei' in 'Yan Lei Ting' is different between the two versions
- '1,000 spiders 10,000 poisons hand' was '1,000 household terminating hand' in the original
- 'Illusionary Yin Finger' was 'One Yin Finger' in the original
- 'Yeung Ding Tin' was 'Yeung Por Tin' in the original
- The name originally assigned to Cheung Mo Gei by Cheung Chui San was 'Cheung Lim Chi' (the same 'Lim Chi' as 'Mok Lim Chi' in LOCH!)

I'm not sure about the translations here. But at this site, you can read the translation up to chapter 25. There are rules to follow though. If you think you cannot follow the rules, then you have to keep searching at spcnet then. Good luck! I love this story.

Grrr, after reading some of the translations I'm soooo mad at the adaptations. They've basically left out all the good parts of ZWJ growing up and how his character formed.


Even JY himself seemed to try to make young ZMJ more "PC" and removed some parts where displayed a little viciousness (warranted though considering the situations).
