hey theres a 90s version? my brother in law loved the old school version with yow yan fat is the 90s version any good? or whats its called? btw any news on when this version is released? what is the story line about? i m jsut interested since my brother in law and sister like this series or old version.
I am so mad!!!
I ordered the DVD set from tigercool.com.
I thought it was such a good deal! The whole series for around $16. Well, you certainly get what you paid for. I can hardly watch the DVD on my TV, because the quality is so bad, it's just keeps having the blocks. I have to watch it on my computer and the quality is only bearable.
SO warning, don't order the series from tigercool.com or at least not till a better version comes out!!

this newest version is the best version of "shanghai tan"
BUT there are 2 bad things about it:
1.the character "ding luk" is old, not attractive...
2.the ending is SO wrong...soooo wrong...
because DL & HMK are good brothers... DL would NEVER do what he did
in this version at the end.
i am still upset about these 2 points.
other than that, its a perfect 10 all because of huang xiao ming
true that HMK must die.
however not in this way...its SO wrong.
DL must NEVER kill him...they are god brothers.
this is why i am so upset about the ending. it makes the whole beautiful
story of two brothers sooooo wrong.
they should keep the original ending like in 1980 version...letting someone unknown killed HMK.
DL should never be made to be the killer of HMK.
The idea of having Ding Lik kill Hui Mun Keung was probably lifted from the 1996 film adaptation (SHANGHAI GRAND) starring Leslie Cheung and Andy Lau. That was the first precedent for the idea of Ding Lik actually killing Hui Mun Keung.
It does make for an interesting (if disturbing) "what if" scenario.
The ending of the original BUND was done, in a way, to set up the sequel (THE BUND II), during which we learn the true identity of Hui Mun Keung's killer and follow Ding Lik's struggle against this new enemy.
hi...ken i am glad to have people talking about this...
so thank you first....
i watched the movie with andy lau & leslie cheung, i don't like it at all
because it seemed like DL or andy lau had all the power(which is totally
different from shanghai tan with chow yuan fat).
i don't know...
i just feel the one with chow yuan fat ending is the best because
DL& HMK were still god brothers forever.
i don't think its good for chinese to have the ending with DL killed HMK because chinese are not like that...
especially in shanghai tan, the brothership between them is as important as the love between HMK & FTT...
anyway...
thank for the nice discussion...
please drop by often....i like talking about HXM & this TV series...
The original always has the advantage of setting the standard that all subsequent reinterpretations need to live up to, and it was a hard act to follow. The movie couldn't capture the magic of the original.
Still, I'm glad that the filmmaker at least *tried* to do a different interpretation, even if I didn't like the final product so much. It would have been a futile exercise to do a straight remake...especially since it's impossible to condense a twenty-five episode TV series into a two-hour film and not lose anything important.
They work on different levels.i don't know...
i just feel the one with chow yuan fat ending is the best because
DL& HMK were still god brothers forever.
Perhaps the different endings speak to different world sensibilities. The world was a cynical place in 1980 (when the original TVB BUND was released), but it's even more cynical now in 2007. The differences in the series perhaps reflect that.
Careful...we're getting into the area of broad generalizations here.i don't think its good for chinese to have the ending with DL killed HMK because chinese are not like that...
See my comment above: it's a more cynical world than it was twenty-seven years ago.
But another theme of this story is selfishness and greed: these evils, which are in all people, can sometimes trump ideals such as loyalty and friendship. One of the things that was great about THE BUND is that it pulled no punches in showing the darker side of human nature.especially in shanghai tan, the brothership between them is as important as the love between HMK & FTT...
The director actually thought up a few different possible endings and the one we're seeing right now is not the original ending for this series. They changed it to this after some feedback from the viewers.
The original ending is having XWQ kill FJY and then XWQ will die at the hands of Ding Li. After the incident, Ding Li and Feng Cheng Cheng will part ways and not be together.
The second ending he thought up is XWQ getting shot by Ding Li, then as he falls, he attempts to shoot FJY. At that moment, XWQ was distracted by the cries of Feng Cheng Cheng so his shot missed and FJY survived.
The third ending is having Feng Cheng Cheng block the shot for FJY and she dies. FJY then hugs his daughter in utter despair.
We should be glad that we didn't get these trashy endings instead.

I agree with Ken. Although I was disappointed with the ending, but at the same time it was very fitting. It represents the DL internal struggle for power, loyalty and friendship. Throughout the entire series he had to chose between those three. Unfortunately, DL's character and actions foreshadow his decision to kill XWQ in the end.
