It's a little slow to start for my taste but once it picks up it's hard to stop watching. I guarantee you won't be dissapointed.

and also, is it just me or are things just happening again and again. Cheng Cheng gets kidnapped for uncountable times and xu wen qiang misses meetings with cheng cheng for uncountable times because of fang yan yun. He seriously has a flaw in his character.

Well, you have to put everything into perspective by considering the era. This was Shanghai in the thirties. Smoking was IN then. Smoking was a symbol of wealth, of being part of the upper-class. They didn't know that it could cause cancer or was bad for the health. Considering a lot of people were smoking opium then, I'd say nicotine is probably the healtier option.

Having said that though, it does kind of send out a bad message to younger kids who might really admire XWQ.

I just finished watching the whole series. Too me long enough, heh. The starting few episodes can be a little draggy and the ending felt a bit rushed, although they still managed to wrap it up nicely. I still enjoyed it overall.

What really bugged me is that Feng Jingyao keeps calling himself Feng Jingrao. He's the only one in the series who keeps saying his own name wrong.

HXM as Xu Wen Jiang is VERY HOOOTTTTTT !!!!! He totally looks great in suits and the charisma OMG ... I think at some angles, he looks like Chow Yun Fat

To be fair, the characters in the original, 1980 TVB BUND series smoked frequently as well, especially Hui Mun Keung and Ding Lik. Their smoking habit was almost a part of their identities.

And, as LiYuanZhi pointed out, smoking *was* the norm in most civilized societies during the 1930s. Especially as the people of 1930s Shanghai were very keen to imitate all things Western (which is one of the minor themes of THE BUND/NEW SHANGHAI BEACH), it's realistic and accurate to show how the Shanghai people of the time copied the West's vices as well as its virtues.

yeah.. that's why I think HXM looks like him here.
Maybe he watched how's Chow at the old Shanghai Bund and now he's following his style but I myself like both of them playing Xu Wen Jiang,
each of them has their own charisma.

hehe, I read an interview where he said Chow Yun Fat called him up, and told him not to smoke cigars in the show (as he did) because Xu Wen Qiang was not in a qualified, high enough position to do so in the beginning! So if you take notice, Xu Wen Qiang in the new series basically sticks to normal cigarettes.

In THE BUND, Hui Mun Keung was a cigarette man from start to finish. Fung Ging Yiu and Ding Lik preferred the stogies, but Hui Mun Keung swore by cigarettes.

after u mentioned that.... i do see some similarities between sammo hung and uncle xiang (especially the shape of the face)
i dunt really think the fat cin looks like eric though since he is wayyyyy more fatter than him, but thats just my opinion

have you ever seen famous korean drama "Winter Sonata" starred by Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo ??? Or another Choi's series like Stairway in Heaven ( she's paired with Kwon Sang Woo ) those were quite well-known at my place
Choi Ji Woo is definately more beautiful than Wang Ye Qi ... but for me sometimes Wang reminds me of Choi Ji Woo
