Inner power operated boat: can this *really* work?

In TVB's LOCH '82 adaptation, when East Heretic Wong Yerk See left Peach Blossom Island to search for Wong Yung (who'd gone missing after going to sea during a storm to find Gwok Jing and North Beggar Hung 7 Gung), he traveled by boat. In the series, this boat had no sail and no oars (and Wong Yerk See was not rowing). It seemed that he was using his inner power to move the boat by blowing into his flute.

1). Did he really do this in the novel?

2). Even if he didn't, is it theoretically possible to do this in Jin Yong's wuxia universe?

TVB actually managed to hide the motor itself quite effectively; what the crew could not hide, however, was the wake created by the motor.

Of course, we can just write that off to superior inner power.
