Post Shi Potian v Guo Jing / Yang Guo

Let's stop comparing both Guo Jing and Yang Guo and put them together as a team.

    Can they defeat Shi Potian?

    defitnitely SPT.
As good as YG and GJ are, they are at most one level better than Long and Mu Island Owners. And SPT beated Long and Mu without trying much. This gives me the impression that YG and GJ can't do much better.

    SPT...

I doubt GJ or YG could possibly have leaped across the ocean. GJ and YG are still mortals. SPT have surpassed that.

SPT would own them when he goes into that trance. SPT might not be SM level, but he's definitely the top tier of JY (also occupied by XZ and DFBB in my opinion).

Don't underestimate Guo Jing and Yang Guo. They have a pretty good chance of winning, in my opinion. If Shi Potian is not in the trance mode, he would definitely be toast within minutes.

o.k. shipotain did not jump across the ocean, he threw a plank andused his inner power to jump across onto the plank and used the 'borrow force' skill to send by mdm bai and caught his lover and jumped back the same way. guo jing could run up flat sides of mounains and yang guo could skate across a marsh that even a twig would sink in. their feets were similar. advanced lightskill and inner power. ZWJ could crawl up a completely smooth metal surface. the mu lords were not as good as yang guo or guo jing. against guo jing and yang guo, shipotian will be beat down.

I don't know Sek Por Tin's story at all, but this "leaping across the ocean" thing sounds pretty outrageous if it's true.

That brings me to another point/mini-rant: in terms of wuxia, I really dislike having too many characters such as the Janitor Monk, Dook Goo Kau Bai, Sek Por Tin, or over in Gu Long's universe, Shum Lung and Gung 9, etc.

Part of the appeal of wuxia (we've got a thread on that currently active at the forum, right?) is that although the martial arts action is fantastic, it's also somewhat believable. Highly exaggerated, yes, but still conceivable. The problem with having too many Janitor Monk/Doo Goo Kau Bai/Sek Por Tin type characters, however, is that it makes a mockery of martial arts. Suddenly, it isn't martial arts anymore but DRAGONBALL Z/SUN WUKONG/SUPERMAN-style fantasy. An atmosphere of quasi-realism (especially wuxia novels set in specific historical contexts) is part of wuxia's appeal, and having characters that make our most powerful martial arts heroes look like ants in comparison frankly dilutes that appeal. It's a little dismaying to be a fan of characters such as Kiu Fung, Gwok Jing, Yeung Gor, Cheung Mo Gei, etc., who through talent, diligence, and struggle gained great martial arts skills...and then discover these "magical" beings that can brush them aside like insects. That's frankly rather lame to me.

That internal energy deal where Shi Potian planted himself onto the ground and then fired himself a long distance like an arrow from a bow was really impressive.

Well at least SPT gained his power through hard work and diligence just like the rest of the JY heroes. He already trained himself to be the best martial artist in the Central Plains without the poem, but with it he became one of the greatest in history. Kind of like Wang Chong Yan with 9 Yin, except he actually learned it, and the poem being much more powerful.

Please read Jin Yong's 侠客行 (in Chinese) or its translation, Ode to Gallantry.
The story is about Shi Potian.

Why do u keep on critisizing Shi Potian when u know nothing about him? People already explained again and again again that Shi Potian did not leap over the ocean. Why must u keep on using this example to say how unreal and unbelievable he is? You cannot stand other characters to be more powerful than your favourite or what? I thought u like Guo Jing because he's patriotic and heroic.
Shi Potian might have gained his powerful internal energy without having a clue that he was doing so, but he didn't gain them overnight. He also did it 'through talent, diligence, and struggle' with a little bit of good luck (that GJ, YG, ZWJ also have). His sword skills, sabre skills, grasping skills, all he has to learn diligently before he can wield them properly. He learned faster than most because he was a quickly learner and intelligent. But that does not make him magical or unbelievable.

If you are going to rant about SPT, please at least have some basic knowledge about him first. Try to get your hands on the Mainland version of XKX if u don't want to read unfinished translation.

Actually, I've seen people say again and again that he *did* "leap over the ocean," and only one counterexample to say that he didn't.

Um. How many times have I ever even mentioned Sek Por Tin? I say "unreal and unbelievable" about Dook Goo Kau Bai alot, but I barely mention Sek Por Tin once a year. Run a check through my posting history and see if I even have half a dozen posts referring to Sek Por Tin during the past three years.

Now you're getting paranoid and casting aspersions. Hui Juk and Deun Yu were much more powerful than Gwok Jing too. Many people seem to criticize them alot and guess what? I'm not one of them. I actually like these two guys. Sorry, kidd, but your attempt to read into my intentions is entirely off the mark...and I regret to say a bit presumptuous on your part.

It's more the scale of what he's supposedly able to do rather than how he got there (although we have a few other characters who didn't "earn" their abilities, but that's kind of beside the point). Look back at my original post: I included the Janitor Monk and Dook Goo Kau Bai (and I probably should include Ah Qing too, although I keep forgetting about her) as well, so no, Sek Por Tin isn't being singled out here.

I have enough information to rant that the depiction given to his abilities goes beyond the point I'm comfortable with in a Jin Yong wuxia story. I don't need to know Sek Por Tin's entire history to believe that he (nor any Jin Yong character) should have abilities comparable to the high-end DC and Marvel superheroes.

I see your minirant more than once about SPT being too powerful. Yes, u didn't single Shi Potian out. But u include him in your minirant when u know nothing about him while u know the others like DY, Sweeper Monk and Dugu QiuBai well. That's why I said nothing when u rant about the others being too power. You at least have some knowledge about them and know what u r talking about when u rant about their powers.

And you are the one who go

Which is why I said 'u cannot stand people being more powerful than yout fave or what?'.

As for SPT leaping over the ocean. Which is more believable? A one line 'SPT leap over the ocean' or a whole translation of the passage (that proof he did not leap over the ocean)? But u still choose to believe the 'SPT leap over the ocean' thing.

I even said nothing when PJ said he dislike SPT the most. At least he knows what SPT is like.

Now you're getting paranoid and casting aspersions. Hui Juk and Deun Yu were much more powerful than Gwok Jing too. Many people seem to criticize them alot and guess what? I'm not one of them. I know u only dislike those powerful characters in terms of the power, not their personality. I'm also talking only about your rant of SPT on his 'over the top' martial arts. I know u don't dislike their whole person. Just their martial art. Can u blame me for being presumptious when u write something like this?
