What if SM kept his shield up?

Is the defense applied to each attack individually (i.e. each attack has its damage reduced by X), or is there a total amount of damage that can be absorbed (shield starts with Y points of damage absorbtion potential and decreases with each attack), and do multiple simultaneous attacks count as one attack, so that while A-X < 0 and B-X < 0, A+B-X may be > 0 and injure SM?

Indeed he is. But you know what? I think he's overcompensating for something. Something which he's had strong urges about for a long time, but which he's in denial about, because he knows those urges are WRONG. Something which, if revealed, would cause him to lose all moral standing among his peers in the hard, macho, straight-Guo Jing-loving environment known as "The Spcnet Wuxia Fiction Forum". Something even countless sessions with countless psychiatrists cannot change, because he was *born that way*. And that's nothing to be ashamed of.

I've tried for years to get people to talk about Sa Tung Teen, Pang Lin Fu, Ling Tze Seung Yan, Yellow River Four Ghosts, etc., to very little avail.

It's these minor characters that give the stories extra texture, I think.
