Default What's your favorite dynasty for wuxia stories?

In which dynasty do you prefer wuxia stories to take place in?

Edit: and what's your least favorite dynasty for wuxia stories to take place in?

Ming, with lots of Dong chang lackeys with powerful eunuch masters and the Zhu family always trying to usurp the throne.

Anything before the last 50 years of the Ming and during the Qing dynasty.

After that time period, I personally feel that much of the adventurous, mystical, legendary aspects from the stories are gone.

I agree. The Qing are too close to reality and wuxia is all about escapism. Anything before, you have a feel of wilderness and a sense of mysticism.

Oops I forgot to add Mythical.

But there is perhaps 1 thing that can suit me. I am not sure how it would play out, but I wonder if I would enjoy wuxia being set in the present day where Wulin is like a secret underground society (Kind of the way movie makers portrayed Underworld, Blade, Highlander. Where seemingly normal people lead double lives unknownst to the general public.)

That's pretty much what I think.

I also remember reading somewhere that during Yongzheng's reign, martial arts were banned, so people had to train underground, so martial arts deterioted severly during that time period.

Sung for Jin Yong, and Ming for Gu Long (I don't think Gu Long wrote any wuxia novels set outside of the Ming Dynasty, either earlier or later).

Song just because it has the best martial arts and more political actions going on.

The closest thing to that would be the HK comic Chung Wah Ying Hung (Zhong Hua Ying Xiong or The Blood Sword). It actually didn't feel so weird or anything mainly because the characters are interesting and made me forget about the time setting. Anyways, I would prefer the Ming dynasty or the Sung. The Qing dynasty doesn't seem to have much adventures or any powerful martial arts.

Not me though. I actually liked the way they dress and thought the hairstyle was cool. Although this dynasty is not my favourite period of wuxia.

No one interested in the Tang?

Setting it earlier not too good IMHO. e.g. If you set it in the close to the 3 Kingdom Period, people will ask, so who is a better archer? Guo Jing or Huang Zhong? And why aren't these martial artists joining the fight?

    Tang Dynasty for me!

It was China's Golden Age, so I suppose there'd be scope for development of martial arts.

I prefer anything during the whole Liao/Nanchao/Dali/Sung periods. I happen to like anything further back.

    I dislike the Qing period.
