Thread: Encyclopedia of Martial Arts

  1. #1

    Default Encyclopedia of Martial Arts

Why don't we all work together and create an "Encyclopedia of Martial Arts" (Jin Yong version --no Gu Long or anyone else) aka martial art skills database. We won't go too indepth into each skills, since that will take forever. For starter, we can list all the "famous" skills first, then later we can go on to the less common skills. Please use this format.

    Basic format:

Chinese name: (in pinyin, preferably Mandarin)
Viet name: (so Viet people can relate when watching dub version )
English name: (a translated version of the pinyin)
Type: Offensive, Defensive, Internal Energy, Evasion, etc.
    Description: (several sentences)
Practiced by: (name of people who used the skills in Jin Yong world)

    Note:
-You don't have to fill in all the information if you don't know
-All members, please help fill in the missing/wrong info if you know. Or if you know a better description, feel free to say it out, I'll edit as needed.
-Please help make this database grow larger and successful.
-When we reach a long list, I'll make a .txt or webpage or something.

An Ran Xiao Hun Zhang aka sad palms

Zhang Jun Bao used three of the stances. Zhou Bo Tong knows 15 of them.
BMSG, YJJ and 9Yang are internal energy cultivations techniques.
9Yin is a mix of everything under the sun.

Burying his Dugu 9 Jian manual under an epitaph, Dugu Qiubai felt he has left his legacy for the next generation. He then moved to Shaolin to study Buddhism, sweep floors and tap elite fighters.

Taiji doesn't require high inner power; ZWJ's ability to use a wooden sword as if it was sharp has to do more with 9 Yang.

Also, Taiji Chuan definitely has many techniques... but then again when Zhang Sanfeng was demonstrating Taiji Jian he used 54 forms and yet we know he is perfectly capable of formless swordplay. So I guess that goes for Taiji Chuan too.

An internal energy cultivation technique is NOT defensive. Its type is just internal energy, as it provides one with strength, stamina, speed, internal energy(duh) etc. etc. Basically it encompasses everything provided by an internal energy technique.

Chinese name: 9 Yin Zhen Jing

    Type: Offensive
    Description:
Practiced by: Mei Chaofeng, her husband (name?), Zhou Buo Tong, Guo Jing, Huang Rong, Hong 7 Gong, Yang Guo, Xiao Long Nu
Once again, this particular skill is not entirely offensive. A portion of it is offensive, while the other is on cultivatng internal energy and some martial arts philosophies in it.

MCF's husband is Chen Xuan Feng. And it's Zhou BoTong, not Zhou BuoTong.

Practiced by: Yang Guo, Zhang Jun Bao (3 stances), Zhou Bo Tong (15 stances)
ZJB learnt this skill? Or he learnt certain stances that weren't related to this skill in the first place. ZBT just knew the names and was unable to unleash this skill effectively.

Vague. The description is known to have 72 styles, and is an extremely quick skill, requires castration. The person's name is Lin Yuan Tu.

Practiced by: Dugu Qiubai, Feng Qingyang, Linghu Chong

I think patterns is not a good word to describe the word "zhao1", I think stances or moves would be a better word to use.

Chinese name: Hong/Xiang Long 18 Zhang
Viet name: Hàn/Giáng Long Thập Bát Chưởng
    English name: 18 Dragon-Subduing Palms

The hardest part is to be able to be strong while still leaving leeway.
Practiced by: Xiao Feng, Hong 7 Gong, Guo Jing
    1) Not necessarily needs the use of 2 hands.
    2) 'if the enemy is strong, I must be stronger'.. Not true though, XF was able to do it mainly because of his character. However, this skill does play a part too, as it is known to be an extremely domineering force, so users must overwhelm their opponents with XL18Z.

    Suggestions & corrections:

Chinese name: Qian Kun Da Nuo Yi

English names: "The Universal Transference" / "Heaven-Earth Reversal" / etc.

    Type: Offensive & Defensive

    Description:
Telekinetic energy manipulation form which is the key martial heritage of successive Ming Cult leaders. Has seven levels of proficiency. Typical combat applications: manipulating the moves of opponents (e.g. redirecting their attacks against each other); absorbing & storing energy from opponents' attacks (e.g. so as to re-employ them in the user's own attacks); 'visualising' opponents' energy usage (e.g. to help replicate their styles). Mechanics are mysterious, but according to Yang Xiao (HSDS Chapter 19), it "transposes the hard & the soft, and the universe's two energies - Yin & Yang."

Not only does it redirect energies, it absorb energies too, store them to a certain amount before unleashing a full blast of power back at enemies. Both Yang Xiao and ZWJ can do this.

I prefer to call it the Heaven-Earth Reversal.

and it can "see" how your opponent uses energy which is quite useful.

Yu Xiao Jian Fa was created by Huang Yaoshi, and only practiced by him and Cheng Ying (there may be more).

The sword style that XLN uses is called Yu Nv(Nu or Nui) Su Xin Jian Fa.

Also, Priest Chong Xu also knew Tai Chi Jian Fa.

    Wrong.
Yu Xiao Jian Fa(Jade Flute Swordplay) is practised by Huang Yao Shi, Cheng Ying and Yang Guo. Its varying strokes are aiming for opponent's acupoints. When used together with the Divine Flick(Dan Zhi Shen Tong), both martial arts can complement each other very well, increasing the effectiveness of the swordplay.

Yu Nu Jian Fa is a swordplay from this:
Chinese name: Yu Nui Xing Jing
Viet name: Ngọc Nữ Tâm Kinh
    English name: Jade Maiden Arts
    Type: Offensive
    Description:
Practiced by: Xiao Long Nu, Yang Guo
The Huashan version of this is different from the ROCH version. Huashan version requires learners to dish out very quick sword stances, the key to overcoming your opponent's force is its nifty moves.

The above is a set of skills comprising of Ancient Tomb's stronger skills. The Yu Nu Jian Fa is a swordplay that is feminine and ladylike, however, in the hands of a guy it can change into a suave and handsome swordplay. This swordplay can be used to counter every single move of QuanZhen sect swordplay.

The uppermost level of Yu Nv Jian Fa would be the Jade Maiden Pure Heart Swordplay.(Maybe somebody can provide a better name for it) This swordplay require lovers to perform. One using Quanzhen swordplay, the other using Jade Maiden swordplay. As lovers, the fighters will be spiritually connected, fighting as one person in two beings, anticipating each other's movements. Fighters must indulge themselves in the feeling of love, for the key here is not to protect their own lives, but to ensure the other lives, with two people complementing each other swordplay with a strong bond allowing them access to each other feelings and thoughts, this swordplay is a force to reckon with. However, this set of swordplay is not fully offensive, it does not go out to kill, but can weaken the enemy no matter how strong he/she is.

You got to be kidding. How on Earth can you summarise all 72 arts into a single martial art?
