Ep3 Trailer Synopsis

Asada Ryutaro, Ijyuuin Noboru and Fujiyoshi Keisuke defy Professor Noguchi over the treatment of the patient, Nishizawa Takafumi, and are relegated to Hokuyou Hospital. Of the former team, only Arase Monji and Satohara Miki remain at Meishin Medical University Hospital. However, Asada proclaims to Zenda Hideki, the director of Hokuyou Hospital, that he will form a new team.

On the other hand, Kataoka Kazumi arranges for Kitou Shoko to take Asada's place in Professor Noguchi's vision of a medical city; moreover, the plan to quietly destroy Hokuyou is underway. At that moment, Ijyuuin is dumbfounded by the listlessness of the doctors working at Hokuyou. The anesthetist Kodaka Nanami and surgeon Toyama Seiji, both of whom had been transferred from Meishin together with Ijyuuin, Asada and Fujiyoshi, are no different. Fujiyoshi obtains a copy of Nishizawa's surgery records from Meishin through Miki. Asada learns that the part that he had thought to be a tumour is a case of gauzeoma (granuloma caused by a gauze meant to stop bleeding during surgery being left behind in the body) after opening up Nishizawa's chest. He changes the operation to extract the gauzeoma. When it comes to the ventricular apex, Toyama offers to take over from Asada. Asada lets Toyama take his turn and he is about to separate it when that happens. Bucking ... Nishizawa's body is jerking wildly because the drug hasn't taken complete effect as a result of the anesthetist's inexperience. Toyama damages the ventricular apex and there is extensive bleeding. Ijyuuin brings Kodaka there ... ...

Karte 3: That Surgery was a Failure Synopsis

Asada Ryutaro, Ijyuuin Noboru and Fujiyoshi Keisuke defy Professor Noguchi over the treatment of the patient, Nishizawa Takafumi, and are relegated to Hokuyou Hospital. Of the former team, only Arase Monji and Satohara Miki remain at Meishin Medical University Hospital. However, Asada proclaims to Zenda Hideki, the director of Hokuyou Hospital, that he will form a new team.

Zenda, who has never been pleased with the objectives of Hokuyou Hospital owner, Kataoka Kazumi, and Professor Noguchi, declares before the two of them that Asada will change Hokuyou. However, they have arranged for Kitou Shoko to take Asada's place in their vision of a medical city as Meishin's newly appointed director; moreover, the plan to quietly destroy Hokuyou is already underway.

At that moment, Ijyuuin is dumbfounded by the listlessness of the doctors working at Hokuyou. The anesthetist Kodaka Nanami and surgeon Toyama Seiji, both of whom had been transferred from Meishin together with Ijyuuin, Asada and Fujiyoshi, are no different. Matsudaira Kotaro, who has been with Hokuyou for since the past, spends his days drinking in the department.

On the other hand, Fujiyoshi obtains a copy of Nishizawa's surgery records from Meishin through Miki. He sees the reason for Professor Noguchi's opposition to further surgery for Nishizawa from the records. Watching from the observation room, Fujiyoshi knows this surgery's difficulty.

Asada, who has opened up Nishizawa's chest, proceeds with a synechiotomy on the part he believes to be a tumour. When he realises that the young anesthetist cannot keep up with the surgery, he orders Ijyuuin to call Kodaka. In the meantime, Asada continues with the surgery but as he probes, a gauze emerges from the part he had thought to be a tumour. Nishizawa's post-surgical disorder is due to gauzeoma (granuloma caused by a gauze meant to stop bleeding during surgery being left behind in the body). Asada changes the operation to remove the gauzeoma. Even Fujiyoshi is amazed by his precision in separating the gauze. When it comes to the ventricular apex, Toyama offers to take over from Asada. Asada lets Toyama take his turn and he is about to separate it when that happens. Bucking ... Ijyuuin brings a reluctant Kodaka to the operating theatre. Kodaka is unmoved by the patient's sudden change in condition. Ignoring her, Asada calmly proceeds with the repair. Witnessing his work, Kodaka quietly starts issuing instructions to the young anesthetist. Nishizawa's operation comes to an end with Asada's prompt actions. Kodaka's actions didn't escape him.

Kitou, who has come with Kataoka to Hokuyou to watch the surgery, talks to Asada. She asks if he really intends to give up the vision of building Meishin's medical city to work at Hokuyou. Asada says there are patients that need him here. Kitou, who endorses Professor Noguchi's vision, tells Asada that it is a waste of his talent to be with Hokuyou. The aim of healthcare should be to save 10,000 people 10 years later rather than the patient right before one's eyes. Rot away with this hospital, she says as her parting words. Asada doesn't reply.

Asada, Ijyuuin and Fujiyoshi have a conference after the surgery. He shows them the surgery records Miki had brought from Meishin. It is evident that the records had been altered. Although the surgeon was another person, they deduce that the actual surgeon was Professor Noguchi due to the large number of nurses and assistants. That was why Professor Noguchi had persistently disregarded Nishizawa's appeals after the surgery. An irate Ijyuuin and Fujiyoshi decide to tell Nishizawa the truth. The next step will be a medical inquest of great importance.

The next day, Ijyuuin, Fujiyoshi and Asada head to Nishizawa's hospital room with a sense of determination. However, Kataoka is there. She says that she has come with a message for Nishizawa from Professor Noguchi, and carries an envelope of money. Ijyuuin and Fujiyoshi are stunned at Kataoka's attempt to take a preemptive measure to silence the patient. But because Nishizawa remains silent, the money is eventually accepted.

That night, Asada comes to examine Nishizawa. The old man thanks him for the surgery and tells him that his wife, who had cared for him during his surgery eight years earlier, hasn't been able to go out of the house lately. He wants to recover for his wife's sake.

Some days later, Nishizawa is discharged from the hospital in good condition. While Kataoka is at Meishin triumphantly telling Professor Noguchi that she has settled the matter with money, Asada, Fujiyoshi, Ijyuuin and Zenda are sending Nishizawa off as he walks away with his grandson, Eita. When they return to the hospital, they pass by Kataoka. Fujiyoshi, who calls out to Kataoka to stop, returns the money Nishizawa had passed to him. Kataoka's expression is full of disbelief.

On the other hand, at Meishin, Kitou orders Arase to follow her instructions and to refrain from having any contact with Asada from now on. Arase tells her that he would like to go to Hokuyou to watch them conduct a surgery because they're an affiliated hospital. Kitou talks about Nishizawa's surgery and dismisses the surgical team as useless. When she mentions that a female anesthetist was there, Arase bursts out laughing. What is the significance of his laughter?

The hospital's director, Zenda Hideki, asks Fujiyoshi about the formation of the team but it is difficult to secure with scant staff. Asada takes notice of Kodaka Nanami amidst all this. This is because Kodaka had given the young anesthetist the correct instructions during the gauzeoma surgery.

Yazawa Marie, who has complained of a stomachache, is taken to Hokuyou accompanied by Ogata Miu. Marie has acute appendicitis and recovers with Asada's surgery. However, during Marie's surgery, Toyama Seiji had ranted at the bungling ME, Nomura Hirohito, causing Nomura to cower further.

At that moment, Kitou Shoko takes "Team Kitou", a team of elite doctors she had formed, along with her to start a conference. Arase has also joined that team.

On the other hand, Professor Noguchi has a meeting with Kataoka Kazumi. Kataoka says actual achievements as well as connections for the permit approval are necessary to make Meishin an actual heart transplant facility. That night, Kataoka has dinner with the former Health Minister, Onda Tetsuzo. She starts to lay the groundwork for the permit approval.

Miu comes to Hokuyou to pay Marie a visit. Marie suggests that Miu, who has been complaining of chest pains, see Asada. However, Miu is unable to consult him.

Miu visits Marie at Hokuyou time and again but she is still unable to speak to Asada. She calls out to Kodaka. Kodaka's face colour momentarily changes when she touches Miu's chest as the girl complains of pain. Asada appears at that moment. As he brushes past Kodaka, she tells him of Miu's symptoms.

Asada promises Miu, who needs to undergo surgery, that they will definitely save her, but Miu's father is actually Onda Tetsuzo. Kataoka, who knows about Miu's illness ... ...

Asada takes notice of Kodaka Nanami amidst all this. This is because Kodaka had given the young anesthetist the correct instructions during the gauzeoma surgery. Asada wants to hear the reason why she hasn't participated in any surgeries all this while despite her capability but Kodaka evades his question by saying that she will enter the operating theatre if her addiction to cacao is cured.

"There are no decent doctors at Hokuyou." That rumour has even reached the ears of a female high school student. Yazawa Marie, who is being taken to Hokuyou by ambulance accompanied by her friend Ogata Miu because she complained of a stomachache, also says she wants to go to Meishin.

Marie has acute appendicitis. Asada, Ijyuuin and other doctors pass by a relieved Miu's side. Asada rebukes Toyama Seiji for making contemptuous remarks about the appendicitis surgery. Miu sees the group of doctors walk off and searches for a place to use her mobile phone. She approaches Kodaka who in turns asks if she has chocolate with her. When Marie's surgery starts, Toyama rants at the bungling ME, Nomura Hirohito. That voice causes Nomura to cower further.

Nomura tells Ijyuuin, who has chased after him, about his past. Nomura had been made to take the blame for a surgeon's mistake at his former hospital, and forced to transfer. Because that surgeon always despised him, Nomura became fearful of surgeons. He concludes that he cannot become a member of a team. Thereupon, Ijyuuin assures him that if it's Asada, he won't treat team members in that manner

The following day, as Ijyuuin passes some documents to Kihara Takehiko at Hokuyou, he sees a girl's figure heading towards the hospital. Isn't that Miu? When Ijyuuin rushes toward her, Miu says she has walked all the way from Meishin. Just as Ijyuuin is about to be careful because she is ill, Miu collapses. As Miu is put on a stretcher and brought into the hospital, Ijyuuin hears about her rare blood type from Kihara. However, Miu needs emergency surgery.

At that moment, Noguchi, who has learned that Miu had left Meishin and collapsed at Hokuyou, snickers that he has rid himself of a nuisance. Can that be Miu's fate?

At that moment, Zenda finally finds blood of the same type as Miu's. It is a mere 400cc but he arranges to have it delivered immediately. On the other hand, Ijyuuin who heard that Kadowaki is out shopping, searches for her at the shopping mall. While there, he runs into Kihara Takehiko. Kihara had been at Hokuyou when Miu collapsed. Although the cunning Noguchi had ordered him to return immediately, Kihara defies it and searches for Kadowaki together with Ijyuuin.

Asada's pace doesn't slow. However, Kodaka Nanami and Matsudaira Kotaro, who is watching the surgery through the department's monitor, are indifferent that they can't hold out until the end without the blood. When Kodaka leaves the department, Kataoka talks to her. Kataoka, whose head will roll if the blood isn't delivered, tells Kodaka that even so Asada is prepared for the worst.

The original estimated time of completion is approaching. The team still has the crucial part of the surgery to go. Toyama is about to give up. Then Asada instructs Nomura to turn the artificial heart-lung machine. He says he intends to maintain the volume of circulating blood by diluting Miu's blood with the insertion of other liquid drugs. This procedure requires skilled management. Nomura is seized with fear and shakes his head. Asada coaxes him by saying that the team will be behind him. As Nomura finally steels his resolve, the doors of the operating theatre open. Kodaka comes in. She has joined the surgery at Kataoka's persuasion. Nomura and Kodaka skillfully regulate the blood volume and anesthesia volume but the limit is approaching.

The blood that is being transported from the blood transfusion centre is caught in a traffic jam. Ijyuuin rides his motor bike to pick it up. He secures the blood and hurries to Hokuyou. Finally reaching the hospital, he passes the blood to a nurse and enters the observation room ... to find that Asada and the rest of the team have stopped moving. As Ijyuuin mutters to himself "I didn't make it in time?" he hears Asada declare the surgery complete. Asada had at the last moment diluted the blood volume and finished the surgery without any mishap. Joy fills the operating theatre at Hokuyou. But ...

There's a man who is vexed over Miu's successful surgery at Hokuyou. It's Meishin's Noguchi. Just as he thinks that Onda's faith in Meishin will stop here, Kihara rushes in. Kihara apologises for not answering the phone call and confesses with trepidation that he had been helping Ijyuuin to secure blood for the surgery. Noguchi, far from being angry with Kihara's actions, commends him.

Then, Noguchi has a meeting with Onda together with Kataoka. Sure enough, Noguchi tells Onda, who is condemning him for Meishin's bungle and stating that he'll withdraw support for Meishin's accreditation, that Kihara performed the surgery on Miu without batting an eyelid. Adding to that, Kataoka says that if he doesn't believe these words, she will go public about Miu being his illegitimate daugther. Even a man like Onda has no choice but to back down.

Little by little, patients who have heard talk of Asada Ryutaro flock to Hokuyou hospital to rely on his skills. However there hasn't been any progress in the formation of Asada's team. Surgeon Toyama Seiji, as usual feels a sense of rivalry towards Asada.

Even the medical staff rush to the observation room when the time for Asada's surgery approaches.

On such an occasion, a call comes in notifying the hospital that Godai Akiyo is being brought over. Her husband, Shozo, who is accompanying her, requests that Asada be her surgeon. The attending medical staff tells him that Asada is performing a surgery now. However, Toyama snatches the telephone receiver and replies that Asada is in.

Toyama undertakes Akiyo's surgery. In a display of rivalry, Toyama finishes that surgery faster than Asada and boasts of his skills.

At Meishin university hospital, Noguchi looks very pleased with the successive successful living donor liver transplantations done by Kitou Shoko's team. In response to this, he proceeds with further preparations for the heart transplant accreditation.

Kataoka Kazumi advances the destruction of Hokuyou. She turns down director, Zenda Hideki's submitted request for trivial electrical system repair expenses, and instead places priority on the introduction of expensive medical testing equipment for the establishment of checkups for the wealthy.

That night, an ominous typhoon draws near the hospital. The hospital has a power outage with the fierce lightning storm. Toyama is informed of Akiyo's cardiac arrest by a nurse. When Toyama rushes over, Ijyuuin has already started giving Akiyo a heart massage. Because the elevator can't move due to the blackout, they open her chest on the spot. When her chest is cut open, Toyama's botched operation is exposed ...

Karte 6: Another Brilliant Surgeon ...

Little by little, patients who have heard of a brilliant surgeon called Asada Ryutaro in Hokuyou hospital flock there to rely on his skills. However there hasn't been any progress in the formation of Asada's team. Surgeon Toyama Seiji, as usual feels a sense of rivalry towards Asada. He presses Asada to include him as a member for the new heart surgery that will be conducted on this day. However, Asada says that there is something that Toyama critically lacks as a surgeon, and won't allow him to be a member.

At that moment, Ijyuuin is told by Nomura Hirohito that Toyama is the son of a reputed professor in one of the universities. His siblings are lecturers in that university and he is the youngest son in a family of outstanding doctors. Nomura speculates that that is why Toyama feels frustrated about his current situation. Ijyuuin also agrees with this opinion. Ijyuuin is preparing for Freshman's Live, an event that is a stepping stone for cardiac surgeons, the next day.

Asada learns from Fujiyoshi that Kodaka Nanami won't join the surgery. Fujiyoshi says that Kodaka's participation in Ogata Miu's surgery a few days ago was due to Kataoka Kazumi's persuasion.

Hokuyou's medical department staff hurry to the observation room when the time for Asada's surgery approaches. As Toyama sees them off with cold eyes, an emergency call comes in from an ambulance that is transporting a patient. Shozo, the husband of Godai Akiyo, the patient being taken to the hospital, also requests that Asada perform her surgery. The attending medical staff is about to tell him that Asada has entered the operating theatre and turn him away. Toyama snatches the telephone receiver and replies that Asada is in.

Toyama ushers Akiyo in. Evidently, Toyama is about to undertake the surgery of Akiyo himself.

Asada and Toyama start performing the surgeries at the same time. A nurse tells Asada, who has finished his surgery, of Toyama's surgery. Asada and Ijyuuin hurry to the ICU but there they find Shozo laughing in relief and Toyama proud that he had finished the surgery quickly.

At Meishin university hospital, Noguchi looks very pleased with the successive successful living donor liver transplantations done by Kitou Shoko's team. In response to this, he proceeds with further preparations for the heart transplant accreditation.

That night, heavy rain begins to fall as a typhoon draws near. Hokuyou's doctors start to prepare to stay over. Kodaka sets out alone in the torrential rain. Arase Monji stands before her blocking her way. He persuades Kodaka to join Asada's team. Kodaka sets off without accepting. Arase ...

The wind and rain gain in strength. Amidst this, Akiyo's condition turns abnormal. A nurse tells Toyama that Akiyo's heart has stopped. At that moment, the hospital has a power outage with the fierce lightning storm.

When Asada and Fujiyoshi learn that one of the power generators in the hospital's east wing isn't working, they instruct the nurses to transport the critically ill patients from that wing. They also help with the movement.

On the other hand, Ijyuuin is already started giving Akiyo a heart massage when Toyama rushes over to the ICU. Nomura suggests that they take her to the operating theatre but the elevator can't move due to the blackout. Ijyuuin says to open her chest on the spot and Toyama complies. Asada gives a flustered Toyama a pep talk. Toyama regains control of himself and proceeds with the surgery relying on the emergency electrical power supply. When the mistake is finally mended, Toyama stops once again. He is examining the heart by palpation. He had remembered Akiyo telling him of her chest pains every morning. He finds a malady that hadn't been discovered by the preoperative examination. Toyama says Akiyo's advanced age makes another surgery impossible and the members get into action. Through the hard work of each member, Toyama manages to finish the surgery without any mishap. The members are filled with a mixture of relief and joy although it was a repeat surgery due to his mistake ... Seeing these colleagues, Toyama ...

The next morning, as Shozo demands to know the reason for Toyama's repeat surgery, Toyama goes down on his knees before Shozo and Akiyo and frankly acknowledges his fault. Then Toyama tells Asada that he wants to be a member of the team even if he has to be his second or third assistant. Asada smiles as Toyama tells him that he wants to perform a surgery again with those members last night ... ...

Several days later, Akiyo leaves the hospital during Toyama's absence. However, he receives a thank you note from her. Toyama offers to teach Ijyuuin, who had missed Freshman's Live because of him. Furthermore, Toyama boldly declares war with Kataoka. However, there's a man who ridicules Toyama's change. It is Matsudaira Kotaro. Just as Toyama is about to hit him, a girl appears, calling Matsudaira "super doctor" ...

At that moment, Takami Kana, a girl who calls Matsudaira Kotaro "super doctor", visits with her mother, Norie. In fact, Matsudaira had conducted a successful living donor liver transplant for mother and child some years ago. Norie who is suffering from oesophageal cancer has come to Hokuyou to seek help but ... Apparently, Noguchi had found about about Norie's liver transplant and made her transfer to Hokuyou due to the high surgical risk.

On the other hand, at Hokuyou, Norie, who has been admitted asks to be operated on as soon as possible but Matsudaira avoids surgery with radiotherapy and medication.

Noguchi meets Kataoka Kazumi at Meishin. He is unamused that Hokuyou has gained a considerable rise in popularity since Asada became a doctor there. To dispel Noguchi's displeasure, Kataoka makes Kitou Shoko receive first-rate media exposure to try to raise Meishin's reputation.

At a department meeting at Hokuyou, Asada talks about Norie's urgent surgery. A drunken Matsudaira enters. The reason why Matsudaira has avoided surgery to this extent is because ... One night, Norie throws up large amounts of blood?!

Toyama Seiji joins Asada's team. However, anesthetist Kodaka Nanami seems to have no such intention.

At that moment, Takami Kana, a girl who calls Matsudaira Kotaro "super doctor", visits Hokuyou with her mother, Norie. In the medical department, Ijyuuin, Toyama and Nomura are mystified when they learn that mother and child wish Matsudaira to perform surgery even though he hasn't held a scalpel in years. Asada and Fujiyoshi share the same sentiments. But Fujiyoshi's research into Matsudaira's past reveals his successful live liver transplant surgery for a mother and child. The mother, Norie, had given her liver to daughter, Kana.

Norie attributes her daughter's safe development to Matsudaira and hands him a referral from Meishin University. She then tells Matsudaira that she has advanced oesophageal cancer. Norie confidently says that if the surgeon is Matsudaira, she can set her mind at ease and entrust the surgery to him but Matsudaira ... ...

At that moment, Arase is standing in an empty ward at Meishin. That ward was where Norie was undergoing medical treatment just a few days ago. Miki tells Arase that close to the surgery date, Norie was found to have a deterioration in liver function and Noguchi transferred her to Hokuyou because the surgical risk had grown significant.

In Hokuyou, Zenda says to Matsudaira, who is gazing at Norie's X-rays, that it seems like a difficult surgery. But Matsudaira doesn't reply. Norie once again hopes that he will perform the surgery. However, Matsudaira is uncertain. In fact, he drinks more than his usual volume. Asada watches Matsudaira intently.

On the other hand, Noguchi meets Kataoka Kazumi at Meishin. He is unamused that Hokuyou has gained a considerable rise in popularity since Asada became a doctor there. To dispel Noguchi's displeasure, Kataoka makes Kitou Shoko receive first-rate media exposure to try to raise Meishin's reputation.

Troubled by the weight of Norie's trust, Mastsudaira persistently attempts to avoid surgery. At a department meeting, even Asada eventually says Norie needs urgent surgery. A drunken Matsudaira enters and gets violent. However Zenda knows the reason why Matsudaira is avoiding surgery. In fact, Matsudaira was kicked out of his former hospital not because of a botched surgery but because he had performed many successful surgeries despite his youth and because of his involvement in doctoring a dissertation.

Furthermore, Matsudaira had professed to staff in the medical department that he could no longer hold a scalpel when he was forced from Meishin to Hokuyou and always operating on terminally ill patients. Asada stands in the way of Matsudaira who has demeaned himself as a "mop-up" doctor. It's "mop-up" although the patient wishes to have surgery because she has hope, Asada says as he confronts Matsudaira. Matsudaira walks off without replying.

Even so, Matsudaira's resolve isn't hardened, and he shelves Norie's surgery aside. One night, when Matsudaira is talking to Kana, a nurse informs him that Norie has thrown up a large amount of blood. Norie's cancer has already advanced to this stage. An emergency surgery is arranged but Matsudaira doesn't appear.

Asada begins the surgery while waiting for Matsudaira. However, he finds out that a tube for intubation that is necessary for the surgery isn't available due to Hokuyou's dismal facilities. They'd be able to carry on if Kodaka is around but she isn't at the hospital. Arase appears in the middle of this crisis. The surgery gets underway with his skilled management. According to Asada, it will be Matsudaira's turn when the initial stage is completed. Matsudaira is obsessing alone. However, he finally gathers his resolve, speaks to Kana who is waiting for her mother, and enters the operating theatre. The surgery progresses due to Matsudaira's arrival. He even concurrently proceeds with a complex collaboration with Asada's surgery. Both of them demonstrate their abilities and are about to make the originally intended surgery a success but ... At that moment, Matsudaira notices a change in the liver. Cancer is even attacking the liver. It wasn't detected in the preoperative examination but Matsudaira assesses that Norie has cancer of the oesophagus and liver. Norie's liver is abnormally small because it had been transplanted in Kana. It's a rather challenging surgery but Matsudaira pulls it off. After the surgery, Matsudaira firmly shakes Asada's hand. Furthermore, he promises Asada that he'll help if anything comes up.

News of the surgery's success immediately reaches Noguchi. Noguchi summons Kataoka and makes sarcastic remarks but that isn't all. He has begun looking for financing from companies other than Kataoka's. Zenda declares war, telling Noguchi that he will destroy Meishin. What is their past? Asada sees Kodaka who didn't participate in Norie's surgery. She appears despondent. What is the reason for her low spirits?

A young lad, Kuroda Tomoki comes to Hokuyou hospital as a patient. The boy's father, Kuroda Toshihiko has come to depend on Asada's skills. However, Toshihiko's expression changes when he learns that Kodaka Nanami is at Hokuyou hospital. Tomoki is actually Kodaka's son and when Tomoki was young, Kodaka was away at an emergency surgery when he underwent medical treatment for to his multiple asthma attacks. In addition, Tomoki was left partially paralysed due to the anesthetist's blunder during that treatment. He has hated his mother ever since. Naturally, Asada and the rest are requested not to let Kodaka participate in Tomoki's surgery.

At that moment, Noguchi informs Kitou Shoko that the itinerary for the site visit by members of heart transplant related society councils to Meishin university hospital has been decided. Noguchi is pleased that his dream of Meishin becoming an accredited facility is coming close to being a reality.

On the other hand, Ijyuuin loses confidence because Toyama has joined Asada's team.

At Eagles Partners, Kataoka Kazumi, who is reporting her progress, is blamed for her slow progress on the Hokuyou case by her superior.

And Tomoki's surgery begins. Kodaka is excluded and in observation room but ...

Karte 8: The Anesthetist who definitely cannot be Forgiven

A young patient comes to Hokuyou hospital. The patient's parents have come to rely on Asada's skills. Toshihiko, the father of the patient, Kuroda Tomoki, is a lawyer who deals with medical lawsuits. He says he is sensitive to surgical staff because he regrets that fact that Tomoki had once suffered hypoxic encephalopathy (brain damage from lack of oxygen) due to a mistake by an anesthetist. Fujiyoshi, who is listening to this story together with Asada, promises to give him advance notification of the staff participating in the surgery. When Toshihiko and his wife Sanae finish their story and are about to leave, they encounter Kodaka Nanami in the corridor and the expressions of Kodaka and Toshihiko change.

At that moment, Noguchi informs Kitou Shoko that the itinerary for the site visit by members of heart transplant related society councils to Meishin university hospital has been decided. Kitou wants to adjust the surgery schedule after the accreditation but the only thing in Noguchi's mind is that Meishin will become an accredited facility.
　
On the other hand, Ijyuuin loses confidence because Toyama has joined Asada's team. He is disheartened by Asada as well as Toyama's exceptional skills.

Toshihiko tells Asada and Fujiyoshi that he will have Tomoki consult another hospital if Kodaka is included in the surgery. When Fujiyoshi asks for the reason, Toshihiko says that Kodaka is Tomoki's mother.

Toshihiko had married Kodaka when she was still a student. Kodaka gave birth to Tomoki but her busy life as an anesthetist meant that she had no time to sleep let alone raise their child. Then Tomoki's birthday came. Kodaka, who had promised to return early, had participated in an emergency surgery and hadn't come back. Tomoki, who was waiting alone at home for Kodaka's return, had multiple asthma attacks. He was discovered by his father and sent to the hospital. Due to a blunder by that hospital's anesthetist, Tomoki lapsed into hypoxic encephalopathy, and has been partially paralysed since that incident. Tomoki has hated his mother ever since. Toshihiko says that the doctor who was in charge of Tomoki's rehabilitation is now his wife.

At Eagles Partners, Kataoka Kazumi, who is reporting her progress, is blamed for her slow progress on the Hokuyou case by her superior. Kataoka leaves irritatedly and finds Zenda Hiroki standing before her. Zenda says he will not let her destroy Hokuyou. "You will be the one sidelined if Meishin nears completion," he warns her.

Tomoki's surgery begins. As was promised, Kodaka is excluded and in the observation room. However, in the middle of the surgery, Tomoki suffers from massive bleeding. Skilled control of the blood flow is required. Kodaka is unable to stay on watching and hurries to the operating theatre. The surgery ends safely due to her participation.

Tomoki's discharge date approaches. Toshihiko expresses his gratitude to Asada. Thereupon, Asada replies that the surgery wouldn't have succeeded without Kodaka. Toshihiko permits Kodaka, who had broken the promise not to join the surgery, to go to Tomoki's ward. Thus, mother and son are reunited.

Kodaka, who has shaken off her past unhappiness, joins Asada's team. At that moment, Zenda proposes a partnership with Kataoka. And the ambitious Noguchi suddenly collapses ...

Fujiyoshi calls out to Kataoka Kazumi, who saw Miwa leave Hokuyou. Hearing about Yuuta's illness, Kataoka asks how this will be dealt with. Fujiyoshi replies that they would like to gamble on the glimmer of hope but have no choice but to give it up because there's no possibility of a transplant.

Noguchi is in poor health. He mutters that there's only one doctor in this world who can save him, and goes to Hokuyou to beg for Zenda's mercy. The next day, Zenda tells Asada and the rest that Noguchi desires treatment at Hokuyou. At those words, the every member of the new team ... and Asada's reply is ...

A mother, Otobe Miwa comes to Hokuyou hospital with her 9-year-old son, Yuuta. Asada starts to explain to Fujiyoshi, Kodaka, Matsudaira and the rest of the team that Yuuta was a patient he had performed Batista surgery on two years ago.

Yuuta is the son of one of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers whom Asada met while working at an African NGO. He suffered from severe dilated cardiomyopathy and Asada had operated on him in the field because there were no other options. However, his heart function had worsened over the years. Miwa and her husband even considered a heart transplant but that measure wasn't possible because they were unable to afford the high cost of medical care. Her husband eventually died from overwork. That's why they have come to rely on Asada once again. For some reason, Ijyuuin is absent from this meeting ...

On the other hand, Noguchi clutches his chest and collapes in his office at Meishin university hospital. Kihara Takehiko, who has come to his office, notices something amiss and gives him first aid treatment. Kihara learns that Noguchi has nitro ready, and suspects it to be angina. He is about to inform Kitou Shoko but Noguchi intercepts him. Noguchi doesn't want Kitou and the rest to know about his illness until the site visit by the heart transplant related society councils just 5 days away, is a sucess.

Yuuta has two months given his present condition. Furthermore, child heart transplants are difficult in Japan. Miwa leaves the hospital helplessly at Asada and Fujiyoshi's explanation. Fujiyoshi calls out to Kataoka Kazumi, who sees Miwa walk away. Hearing about Yuuta's illness, Kataoka inquires how they will deal with it. Fujiyoshi replies that they would like to gamble on the mere 1% of hope but have no choice but give it up because there's no possibility of a transplant.

That night, Asada notices Ijyuuin practising surgery alone in the courtyard. Ijyuuin, who feels impatience at the rawness of his skills, was silently practising during the meeting on Yuuta's condition. Before Asada can call out to Ijyuuin, Matsudaira talks to Ijyuuin. Ijyuuin is struggling to acquire skills like Asada's and Toyama's but he seems out of their league. Matsudaira encouragingly tells Ijyuuin that there's a special job that can only be done by him and that he's already been doing it.

Noguchi is in poor health. Kitou, who has been visiting Noguchi's office frequently, also notices his poor condition. Taking sides with Noguchi, Kihara lies that he has a cold. However, when Kitou leaves, Kihara advices Noguchi to get her opinion. Even so, Noguchi refuses medical examination and treatment. If Kitou learns about his illness, she will take over his position. Noguchi, who is insistent on risking his life for the success of the site visit, mutters that there's only one doctor in this world who can save him.

And the hospital Noguchi visits is Hokuyou. In fact, the director of Hokuyou was Noguchi's contemporary during their student days. Noguchi begs Zenda, whom he had parted ways with, for mercy as his tears flow. The next day, Zenda tells Asada and the rest that Noguchi desires treatment at Hokuyou. Furthermore, he has designated Asada as the only surgeon able to perform surgery so that he'll be back on his feet before the site visit.

Toyama and the rest oppose the surgery but Asada agrees to it simply because Noguchi is a patient in need of help. Kataoka, who learns about this, states her terms to Noguchi. First, Yuuta's surgery will be done at Meishin if Noguchi's surgery succeeds. Additionally, Asada and the rest of the team will go over and remain at Meishin after that surgery. Second, the financing agreement Noguchi is working on with Goldberg will return to Eagle Partners. Noguchi has no choice but to agree.

Noguchi's surgery begins at last. It is a challenging surgery given the need to consider his early comeback after the surgery. However, Asada and the rest of the team pull together and start the difficult surgery. In the midst of this flurry of activity is Ijyuuin who is keenly aware of the limits of his technique. However, Ijyuuin has come to terms with it at Matsudaira's encouragement and is no longer brooding with worry. And they make the surgery a success through outstanding teamwork.

According to his wishes, Noguchi returns on the day of the site visit and succeeds in getting Meishin recognised as a heart transplant facility. However, he doesn't keep his promise to Kataoka. Unaware of that, Asada and the rest come to Meishin together with Yuuta. Saving the boy's life is their only consideration ...

You're welcome. I'm getting the latest episodes that air from torrents. I can't stand waiting for the season to end to get my dose of Iryu through DVD.

My Iryu 2 favourite episode has to be Ep 8. It's a very memorable and heart rending one that really moved me but yet didn't come across as overwrought and melodramatic. Still, I must say that I prefer the original Iryu series compared to the sequel. The mood isn't quite the same in this one. And with the multitude of characters to juggle in Iryu 2, some of my favourite characters have been relegated to being wallflowers while the character development of the new ones have been unbalanced and not exactly interesting to watch. Asada is just bland even though he's the main character.

I'm still watching it because I want to know where it leads from here, and there's the occasional episode that's rewarding to watch.
