Post Which modern martial arts is more effective - Yoga or Taiji?

Both Yoga and Taiji techniques are portrayed in the Jin Yong universe. You Tanzhi learns Yoga within a short time and becomes incredibly much more powerful, while Zhang Sanfeng created Taiji and pass it on to his Wudang disciples and to Zhang Wuji too. Can Yoga be referred to as a martial arts?

Now, apart from Yijin Jing, both Yoga and Taiji are the only known techniques that exists to this very modern day from the world of JY. Both techniques are said to be able to improve health, improve concentration and build up a better body system. But which do you deem to be more effective currently?

    i choose taiji.
    Let him be violent,
    Let him be evil,
For me, it is enough if I

Hmm, being a martial artist myself and studying both for some time now, I don't consider Yoga a martial art. It is more a way of life (but there are differences in Yoga). Most yoga techniques help better the body and help the chi not fight. Taiji, depending on the style also betters the body but has more techniques for "fighting." I prefer Taiji over Yoga since I use it more in sparring. Just my opinion. I am not a pro in Yoga or Taiji but found Taiji more of a martial arts.

Those who suffer from some cancers which cannot be cured can be healed miraculously by practicing Taiji. While this is very subjective, and had not proven scientifically until today, I remembered that I read somewhere that China does has a hospital specialising in this field.

    I would chose Taiji.

    Yoga isn't a martial art.

People who have been suffering cancers have been healed miraculously by all manner of stuff. This points more towards the source of the cure not being in the stuff, as opposed to there being untold numbers of secret sources of power unknown to medical science.

as a yoga practinoneer, i can tell you yoga is very effective in building up the body's health and can help prevent illnesses. i used to suffer from frequent poor health and sinus allergies, plus i'd catch flu easily when ever it's cold. after practsing yoga for 13 days, my health inproved, and my allergies disappeared. and no need to fear the cold.(bit like YTZ and the icy silkworm posion, that). but yoga itself is not a martial arts through indian martial arts evocate the practice of yoga. like Mallayuddha(mace and cudgle), Kuttu Varisai (empty hand combat), Varma Kalai (the art of vital(accui)points) and Adithada (kickboxing) in Tamil Nadu, and Kalari Payattu ((18 weapons)way of the arena) in Kerala. and (sword defeating a thousand)Gatka swordplay in the punjab. Indian wrestling, or Pehlwani espically uses yoga to improve flexiblity and strenght.

Some organizations believe that India is the origin of their martial arts, such as Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.
India has influenced the martial arts of the Malay peoples(silat)

Does JY even mention using yoga as chi cultivator for martial arts? I haven't read too many of the 3rd edition changes.

I have only studied yoga for 2 years but taiji for 6 years. So I like taiji more since it calms me more than yoga. Plus, you learn cool counter attacks. Although some aspect of yoga is used in taiji (or the other way around) making the executions of some moves like yoga moves.

MMM......don't know if you have seen it, but taichi used in anything other than forms or sets, but it is incredibly powerful.
I can't say the same for yoga because I have never seen it used other then exercise and breathing techinques.

TaiJi, I have knew a classmate that has learnt Taiji moves and stances and he actually performed it in class and I believe you can spar using Taiji.

So obviously Taiji. From my little experience, Yoga is just stretching and practice of breathing and meditation.

you guys see any one in MMA using taiji or yoga? cuzz if they do they'll get their *** woop... no disrespect to both of those, but they're more in the area of keeping the body healthy... when it comes to sparring/fighting boxing/judo/karate/jujisu/taikando/wrestling/mui thai ect... are all better... almost all martial art will have some sort of grappling/judo in there. and belive it or not most martial art aren't about strengh, it's about using the oponent force to a certain extent, strengh comes later. most martial artist aren't that strong vs those that does heavy weight lifting (it's almost a concept in martial art that strengh isn't as important as quickness/moves/thianking. and that might be the miss conception. now a day they've finnally figure it out. most of the top fighter are martial artist who are extraordinary strong, not only they got the skill but they have the strengh to over power thier oponent.

I think there were some people in the early UFC who used Taiji. If I'm remembering this correctly, they actually did relatively well but everyone got pwned by Gracie anyway. Kinda difficult to redirect his force without grappling training.

I can speak from experience since I studied Taiji and its aspects (especially incorporating it in my kungfu) that Taiji has a lot of health benefits like yoga but is very useful in ground work and sparring. At my MA place (1 st degree black belt) we would do a full contact spar weekly and Taiji is great to counter moves. I am not a Taiji master since I kind of get bored with some of the aspects but it is quite useful in close combat (reversals, sweeps, arm locks).

On health benefits they should both be unmatched. But for combat Taichi hands down.

well, unfortunately for u the that taichi skill is not based on jy novels, it`s actually a real life-record during 18++ of the Chen family taiji. Or better the historical facts about Yang Lu-chan during the Yang Style taichi glorious day.

as for YOGA, indeed there r things that can be seen through tv, documentary-like. have u heard during 80 or 90s, that a practitioner of yoga manage to levitate for a few seconds?
