Default Lo Yau Gerk - a better fighter than he gets credit for?

To his dying day, Beggar's Union Chief Lo Yau Gerk never became one of wulin's top fighters. The man had heart, but his martial arts were mediocre. In the world of ROCH, it's doubtful that he broke into the top 25 martial artists of the period.

Surprisingly, however, he held his own during the assault on Seung Yeung Fortress after Gwok Jing was injured by the Golden Wheel Monk and the other Mongol mercenaries. With Gwok Jing incapacitated, Wong Yung in labor, and Yeung Gor and Little Dragon Girl already having their hands full fighting the Golden Wheel Monk, it was up to Lo Yau Gerk to singlehandedly hold off Siu Seung Tze, Lui Mor Singh, Fok Do, and Dat Yee Ba. Fok Do was the weakest member of that group, but he'd already handily defeated Lo Yau Gerk during the Luk Family Manor Heroes Conference. Somehow, however, Lo Yau Gerk was able to hold off those four superior fighters without getting killed or seriously wounded until help arrived (in the form of the Fisherman and Mo 3 Tung). How was Lo able to put up such a good fight against such powerful opposition?

That could be. That's probably the only way it could be.

More or less. Yeung Gor and Little Dragon Girl were helping him at first, but they got drawn away by the Golden Wheel Monk. For quite a while afterwards, poor Lo Yau Gerk was left to fend off the other Mongol mercenaries all by his little lonesome.

The fight against Huo Dao wasn't as one-sided as it was portrayed in the tv series. Lu Youjiao has many chances to take victory in the duel but he only began to train with the Dog-beating stick.
Underneath the fluffly, cudly exterior lies the tormented and complex creature known as the panda.

i can't find the passage that says he fought of four experts by himself. it was zhuzuli who fought daerba and huado and XLN who fought Xiaoxiang Zi and Nimoxing. Lu Youjiao was patrolling the northern gate with a hundred beggers. XLN saw him only after guo xiang was snatched. Lu Youjiao was considered an expert, through he was below huodo slightly, Lu Youjiao's martial arts should be on par with hao datong(who was also defeated by huodo).

Here's how ROCH '83 differed: Lo Yau Gerk and Little Dragon Girl teamed up against Siu Seung Tze, Lui Mor Singh, Fok Do, and Dat Yee Ba (there were no set opponents; the fight was kind of chaotic). Yeung Gor, seeing that Little Dragon Girl and Lo Yau Gerk were in trouble (they weren't exactly losing just yet, but they did seem overwhelmed), joined the fight. Yeung Gor then told Little Dragon Girl that the Golden Wheel Monk was pursuing the Gwok Family, so the soon-to-be Divine Condor Couple went to take the heat off the Gwoks...leaving Lo Yau Gerk to fend off the other four Mongol experts by himself.

Lo Yau Gerk and his four opponents were not seen again until after Wong Yung had given birth to both of the twins, and was on her way out of the city to pursue Lee Mok Sau and baby Gwok Seung. As she reached the city gates, Wong Yung saw that Lo Yau Gerk was being overwhelmed by the four Mongolian experts (but he was still unhurt, surprisingly). As soon as Fok Do spotted Wong Yung, the tactic changed from fighting Lo Yau Gerk to taking Wong Yung hostage. Wong Yung, weakened by twin childbirth just minutes earlier, was easily subdued by Fok Do and taken hostage. By this time, more beggars had shown up to assist Lo Yau Gerk and Wong Yung, but they were helpless because the Mongols had Wong Yung as their hostage. Fortunately, Mo 3 Tung and the Fisherman arrived at that very moment and scared the attackers away with their 1 Yeung Finger Technique. Chu Tze Lau, however, was not present; it was explained by the Fisherman a few minutes later that Chu had gone to the Sung capital to request reinforcements.

And that was one of the best action sequences in a wuxia series ever. Around 30 minutes or so of more or less continuous fight action (but still moving the story along), with multiple fighters engaged in multilple fights in multiple venues. That's what wuxia should be about.

And ironically, it should come in ROCH, the wuxia story that got hijacked by a gushy romance subplot.

Ken you need to tell us that it's from an adaption. Then we can look at it differently. I re-read that whole scene to find out later it's from ROCH83.

So if you are refering to the adaption, then yes. If you are refering to the actual novel, then the question is irrelevant.
