Missed Opportunities in Jin Yong wuxia

Every single time in DGSD DY managed to survive a dangerous situation is a wasted opportunity as far as I am concerned. Can you imagine how awesome DGSD would be if DY died after couple of pages and instead of wasting much of the book on DY we would get to see young XF in action?

When OYF didn't take YG with him right at the beginning of ROCH. Instead of YG complaining all the time and XLN being boring we could have seen crazy OYF and young YG doing all kinds of fun stuff.

When Kunlun 3 Saints He Zudao left Shaolin quickly at the beginning of HSDS. If he had not left so quickly he could have heard Jue Yuan's last recitation of the 9Yang manual as well and the Kunlun sect would become more powerful. (For some reason I always liked the Kunlun sect eventhough the Kunlun disciples in the later parts of HSDS were pretty much all somewhat evil)

Oh, that is too cruel and I doubt how the story can proceed if the main character does not have arms! For me, the missed opportunities are:

1. YG did not take up the position of the leader of the Beggar Clan even though he possessed 'dog beating technique'.
2. Z3F and GX did not end up together.

I find it more ludicrous how people tell me they would prefer Yang Guo with one arm over two arms, that they would love him more so.

Z3F and GX, that would have been nice. They do not even have to be together in the end. They can part ways later and still form Er Mei and WuTang. I think I would have been ok with a WCY-LCY deal.

There was no "forcing" of any Gwok descendents to do anything. If Gwok Fu, Gwok Seung, or Gwok Por Lo had said to their parents, "Mother, Father, I'm sorry. I've decided that I do not want to give my life to defending Seung Yeung. Thank you for having raised and educated for me. Farewell," then Gwok Jing and Wong Yung would have been disappointed, but they would not have forced their children into doing anything or making any sacrifice they were not prepared to make for themselves. The Gwok children each chose her or his own destiny.

Uhm, you're right, Senior Master. There was most probably not any "forcing" of any Guo descentdants to stay fighting together with their parents.
But I think Guo Jing and Huang Rong could force his children to retreat to Peach Blossom Island to prepare for other plans to oppose Mongolian invaders.
If that was the case, there would be another GREAT in HSDS, maybe some Mister Guo, who together with Lady Yang, made the most MYSTIC COUPLE of GREATS ever. . And perhaps I would no longer hate Lady Yang as I do.

GJ was not past his 80's when he died so he should still be around Great level. Look at ZBT and 1D...they are in their 70's, 80's, or even 90's in ROCH and they were still very powerful so I don't think Guo Jing was 'too old'. I think it was just that there was too much soldiers and he got overwhelmed.

Certainly GJ was still a Great. But what I meant was they were about to reach their final natural ends.

Wuyazi knows XWXG so when JMZ got Wuyazi's inner power, he would already have the XWXG energy flowing properly. So JMZ would later still get the XWXG manuals and study them but this time the lack of the last volume might not be a big deal. So he would be able to use XWXG to power the Shaolin 72 Arts and maybe even be able to practice YJJ without suffering injuries.

He would be a major powerhouse. Of course to counteract this at Shaolin the crowd of people would mob XF, DY would try to get in on the fight on XF's side, and suck the inner power of the entire crowd due to their close proximity. After DY absorbs all the inner power of the entire Shaolin Heroes Gathering he explodes and a huge crater is left where Shaolin used to be.

We usually talk about characters who experienced great opportunities/

Did any character miss any great opportunity that made you sigh and/or weep and/or say "Darn it, you idiot, why didn't you....?"

I'm talking about FORSEEABLE opportunities. Not like "if Ren Woxing would have been born 500 years for Dugu Qiubai to meet" kind of opportunities!

One example is that Lord Long and Lord Mu of Gallant Island could not interpret the secret of Ode to Gallantry art. If they could have concentrated on the right parts of the art, they could possibly have discovered the secret.

XF and Ah Zhu. They could have lived happily ever after like YG and XLN.
