Here's the site for Takashi's new film, Sono Toki wa Kare ni Yoroshiku/That Time I Said Hi to My Boyfriend, which also stars Yamada Takayuki: http://www.sonokare.com/

What do you guys think about Takashi's glasses? They're definitely a far cry from the nerdy ones he had to wear in Teppan Shoujo Akane.

It makes him look so intellectual and mature. Definitely better than those geeky ones in Teppan Shoujo Akane. Ugh, but they're like a shield over those eyes to reduce the potency of that devastating smile?!?!?

Definitely, these glasses are MUCH better. Intellect vs. Nerd...I pick the former.

And YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY for a new drama in the coming season...although I'm shocked/saddened that the Johnnys have control of the world and decided to use Koki as the main actor...
The drama is called Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go, starring Tanaka Koki, Kuriyama Chiaki, Kato Rosa, and of course our very own Takashi.

That's exactly how I felt when I heard about this new series. Koki: Chiaki: decent actress, but sometimes reminds me of a transvestite. Takashi's role will probably be something like Koki's "sidekick" and possible romantic rival who will lose out in the end. I guess I'll still give this series a shot and see how it progresses.

This supporting role might have something to do with TSA's failure to impress. In the Upcoming Japanese Dramas thread, jade also talked about Takashi's talent agent not having as much clout as JE. I went to Takashi's talent agency (Sun Music) site to see which other celebrities are under the same management, and didn't recognize anyone else. Generally, how many chances are actors given to "impress" in a leading role? As an example and kind of OT, it seemed like Naohito Fujiki was getting more leading roles for awhile, but recently he's been delegated to supporting ones again. Is that mainly due to talent agency limitations, personal choice/time constraints, ratings of previous series, or maybe more likely, a combination of factors?

It isn't clear how artistes are cast for roles. I haven't really tried searching Japanese sites to find out whether roles are always tailor made or whether they conduct auditions. I should ask my Japanese friends. It is a combination of all the factors you listed. Popularity and high profiles count i.e. Yamapi and Nagasawa Masami because they are thought to bring in high viewership ratings but this may not necessarily be true.

Shinohara Ryoko always used to be cast in supporting roles in dramas in the early 1990s but she has managed to move up the ranks to become a leading and highly sought after actress. Yonekura Ryoko had a bomb in the Japanese remake of Bewitched but she bounced back from that. Mokomichi Hayami, one of the young teen idols around Takashi's age group and a mediocre actor in my opinion, recently rose from obscurity to helm to dramas though his performances weren't attention raising. The first one being the dismal Regatta, before moving on to Tokyo Tower, the current Fuji TV Monday 9.00 pm drama. The so-called golden timeslot. This makes it hard to pinpoint how one can be successful although a standout role will definitely be good in helping one break into a leading role.

As for Naohito, he has been working really hard. If you will recall, he has been doing bit parts in many dramas and appears in a drama at least every season. Not all choices have been wise. I don't know whether that can be interpreted to mean his star is waning or if he's just being more hardworking to look after his family.

There also seems to be a trend of devoting more dramas to a younger set of actors and actresses, and since the style is to have artistes portray character their age, I think there are very limited opportunities to score lead roles. Those with talents don't always get their dues i.e. Nishimura Masahiko, Fukatsu Eri. While average folks like Hasegawa Kyoko who really annoys the hell out of me always manage to get substantial roles although they pretty much wear the same expression each drama.

Haha. I don't think this helped answer your queries!

Thanks for the reply, jade. I'm still quite new to Japanese entertainment and have only truly been into Jdoramas for 4 months, so I'm always interested in gaining more insight such as what you've provided here. Please let me know what your Japanese friends say if they are more aware of the casting process.

I also thought maybe height or build had something to do with main lead delegation (in comparing this one aspect of Takashi to Mokomichi Hayami), but then I look at actors like Yamada Takayuki and Takizawa Hideaki, and there goes that theory. Ratings for Tokyo Tower have been falling and seem disappointing considering it's shown in such a highly sought-after time slot. It'll be interesting to see how Hayami will be cast hereafter. There's also another theory having to do with "connections" that's generally popular in almost any business.

The way Takashi's career has been unfolding kind of reminds me of Naohito's in that respect. Both have been in at least a drama every year for about a decade, although their dividing path seems to be the way of movies. I hope Naohito's star isn't waning; it'd be quite a shame. Hopefully Takashi will be like Naohito and at least get a chance in meatier, more memorable leading roles.

A short trailer is up for Sono Toki wa Kare ni Yoroshiku at its website. Takashi only got about 2 seconds of screentime, though. I love his intellectual look. Hopefully a trailer will be available for Enma soon considering it's, well, already out in Japan!

    Thanks. Will check it out.

Just to go back to the earlier topic of finding fame in the entertainment scene, I found an English article on actress Koyuki which briefly relates to this issue. It doesn't reveal anything new but just pretty much confirms what we've all along suspected.

'In the Japanese showbiz world, where how you're handled is as important as how talented you are, the agency you belong to can make or break a career, so Koyuki treaded very carefully before joining up with Avex. Koyuki was largely absent as she tried to settle in to a new talent agency. "The main reason for her absence was that she was quietly trying to break away from her handlers and take control over her career into her own hands," a showbiz source tells Sunday Mainichi. With agencies being so important, making the wrong choice can have fatal consequences for a performers' career. Koyuki's young sister, artist Yayoi, is managed by Avex and her successful relationship with the company probably had some role in drawing the model-cum-actress into signing.'

The trailer for ENMA has actually been out for a while, but for some reason it's not on the ENMA website.

I didn't even know Koyuki had a younger sister who's in showbiz as well. I'm not sure how old that article is, but was Koyuki's old agency FLaMme or is FLaMme = Avex?

She was formerly with FLaMme. Avex has actually been a management company for singers and entertainers such as Hamasaki Ayumi, Otsuka Ai for a very long time but has recently had ambitions to broaden its portfolio.

The article is a very recent one because Koyuki hasn't been on TV or movie screens since Always Sunset on 3rd Street, which means its been about a year of absence.

Takashi needs a move if he's to get roles as big as Yamada Takayuki otherwise he'll just need to bid his luck.

I'm lazy to translate the interview that these pictures come from since its very long and since its use of quite a lot of colloquial Japanese makes it mind-boggling so this will have to do for now.

I found this while browsing through some Japanese blogs.
It's the look for Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go. LOL How cute.

And this is a one-pager in Men's Non-no 2007.04. I'm away from home without a scanner, so this will have to do for now.

Last but not least, this is the behind-the-scenes video for Takashi's (and Inoue Mao's) new vegetable/fruit juice commercial.

Thanks for the goodies, ryo-x-pi. That's not the kind of look I was expecting for a series about trains, but it's cute.

Takashi is a guest star in the new film Smile Seiya no Kiseki.

Thanks! Takashi looks like he's gained some weight, which is great! I don't really like the mustache, but it does give him a more matured look.

Yah, i don't like the moustache either. I guess we prefer him more youthful as the way he is.
