Default Were Damo's Yi Jin Jing and Fang Zheng's Yi Jin Jing pretty the same?

    • “After First Ancestor passed away and returned to Heaven, Second Ancestor stumped upon a volume of Buddhist scripture by First Ancestor’s cattail hassock, and that was the Tendon Altering Sutra. This volume had very abstruse argumentation and principles, and even after Second Ancestor studied it assiduously, he still could not understand it.

I found the above passage in SPWanderer, chapter 18, Lanny Lin's translation.
From that, we can infer that Damo did NOT ever use Tendon Altering Sutra to fight opponents.
But in DGSD, Yi Jin Jing was said to be making up the great fame of Shaolin and togerther with 6MSJ were 2 strongest kung fu skills. So it seemed that Yi Jin Jing in SPWanderer was pretty the same as the Yi Jin Jing described in DSGS.
If that's the case, Yi Jin Jing was not so powerful as we expected.

Well, if I remember right in 2nd edition there was much to imply they were not the same. Like in DGSD YTZ had a manual with both Sanskrit words and also pictures, from which alone one could learn 50+% of YJJ. Whereas in XAJH it was all words, and I think it might have been spoken instead of manual (not sure, don't have the book).

In 3rd, though, YTZ no longer learns YJJ, but a form of yoga or something like that.

What makes u think that YJJ in SOD is not powerful?

Fan Zheng's YJJ as demonstrated in the fight against RWX shows boundless internal energy that even made the XXDF useless.

And that was not good enough?

If it was really boundless then Fang Zheng would have pwned RWX...

He would have, but for the cunning of RWX and the benevolence of Fang Zhen.

I was referring more to the use of the term "boundless". I have this pet peeve about people using terms like "boundless", "unimaginable", "omnipotent", etc. when they really mean "powerful". If Fang Zheng truly had "boundless" inner power then he could have blown up the whole temple with one Kamehameha.

I think JY himself realised the discrepency in the 2nd editions. Thats why he fixed the problem by having YTZ learn Yoga instead in 3rd ed.

The discrepency in 2nd ed being that the DGSD version had pictorial instructions but the SOD version was all words.

Not to mention the time periods of the invention of the sutra was described differently in the 2 novels. Too many inconsistencies, good to be fixed.

yiyinji is one of those skills which is so deep and profound that it has no limits and two people practising it may end up with different results.(the DG9J , by your own interpertation path). so can gain alot, some suffer by going on the wrong path, but the skill itself is the same. only the manuscript that ah zhu stole was different because it had the indian yoga inside, but the yiyinji was the same, in jin yong universe.
