Perhaps the closest he came to was having Au Yeung Fung the most powerful at the end of LOCH.Originally Posted by soulmelody

Who is a villain? Who is a hero? Wei Xiaobao raped and pillaged his way through his novel.
Now that I think about it, exactly why did the Swordsman movies translate Dongfang Bubai as "Asia the Invincible"? I guess if you interpreted Dongfang as "Asia"... but that name still makes no sense.
What is DFBB's real name anyway?Originally Posted by K2Grey

There would be a lot of depressed readers and it just wouldn't work out because as with everything, villains never succeed fully.Originally Posted by soulmelody
Won't be as much interest in the book from the majority I think and also would be a hell lot harder to write a decent ending for it than the generic good guy wins albeit some losses along the way such as deaths of girlfriends etc....

It could kind of work if by the end, the villain begins to show remorse over his/her horrible deeds, and begins to consider whether or not there could have been a better way. Perhaps the villain becomes a tragic hero by realizing too late that he/she had made many mistakes, and vainly tries to rectify them.
It's possible to have an evil, but sympathetic protagonist. Quite a few examples of western literature (i.e. John Milton's PARADISE LOST) have the Devil as protagonist. If the Devil can be a protagonist, then surely an "evil" wuxia character can be as well.
Actually, what would be REALLY EXTREMELY COOL, is if Jin Yong made the novel's only hero suddenly turn evil at the very end.

That could also work, and it would break with convention.Originally Posted by PJ

Jin Yong never did this, but Gu Long often gave us the opportunity to see what some of his heroic characters might be like if they were on the other side by creating doppelgangers. For example, Yip Goo Sing was essentially an evil doppelganger of Sai Mun Chui Sheut, and Ging Mo Meng was an evil doppelganger of Ah Fei.
Apparently 'Dongfang' is a real surname. I think he changed his name though.Originally Posted by K2Grey
