Did Yeung Teet Sum and Gwok Siu Teen have the talent for advanced martial arts?

We know that several of Yeung Teet Sum and Gwok Siu Teen's descendents had tremendous talent for the martial arts, but what about the original patriarchs themselves? Yeung Teet Sum and Gwok Siu Teen are pretty much bottom rung fighters in wulin, but was that because they lacked talent or because they were never lucky enough to encounter a superior martial arts teacher or manual? If the two patriarchs were to have had the same benefits that their descendents had (i.e. training by Greats, special training devices and manuals, etc.), would their martial arts have reached elite level or did they simply not have the talent?

On a side note, it's interesting that the Yeung and Gwok families originally had nothing to do whatsoever with the Greats, the 9 Yum Jen Ging, and the happenings in the greater wulin, but after Yau Chui Gei's fateful visit, the story of the Greats and the 9 Yum Jen Ging would be inextricably tied to the stories of the Yeung and Gwok families.
