I didn't miss it. I've read of it days ago. I think it's a real pity but well, if it will make him happier...

I suppose swimming competitions will now get more exciting and competitive with him out of the way. No more predictable outcomes!

Aussies are so full of themselves sometime . I'm Canadian so I'm unbiased and I can say that Phelps is not overrated. Both are amazing but it is Ian Thorpe that is overrated according to all the hype I've heard.

perhaps if people aren't as thick and read between the words, they will know i don't give a sh1t about phelps or thorpe.
my original 'overrated' comment was aimed at getting a response from Sparky since shes more fascinated with Phelps body than his swimming prowess.

-.-' How can he be overrated?

"Aged 14 years and 5 months, Thorpe became the youngest male ever to be selected for the Australian team"

"in 2001, became the only person to have won six gold medals in one World Championships. In total, Thorpe has won eleven World Championship golds, the highest number of any swimmer."

"Thorpe is the only person to have been named World Swimmer of the Year four times by Swimming World magazine"

I think he's the best swimmer around, well, not anymore T-T..

Did you watch the Australian Championships tonight? they had a special tribute to Ian Thorpe.. the number of records he broke was just amazing. In the 400m freestyle, he was untouchable for the 10 years that he competed in that race!

His departure will leave the Aussie Mens swimming team weak for next years World Championship in Melbourne.

correction...he's one of the best "distance" freestylers (namely the 200 & 400)

personally, i think all time great swimmers should be a bit more versatile since there's 13 individual events

(don't get me wrong, i still think ian thorpe is still definitely a great swimmer...but not the best around)

i disagree with your assessment. why do swimmers need to compete in as many events as they can just so they satisfy your definition of a great swimmer?
do you see 100m sprinters competing in other track and field events other than the 100m and 200m events?
