do you see 100m sprinters competing in other track and field events other than the 100m and 200m events?
i did not say thorpe is not a great swimmer...i said i wouldn't consider him the "best swimmer around" (when he was in season that is). if you look at his records, he centers around two events: 200 & 400 free (and occasionally the 100 & 800). that said, there are plenty of swimmers out there who can dominate two events. going by current world records held there's brendan hansen (br), aaron piersol (ba), leisle jones (br), & michael phelp (fly & im)

for someone who dominated the 200, 400 freestyle events consistently for 10 years and voted World Swimmer of the Year four times - thats enough achievement to rate Thorpe as one of the Best Swimmers around.

firstly he has not dominated the 2 & 4 for a decade

secondly the "world swimmer award thing" has only been around since 1980 (according to wikipedia) and i'm not sure what basis they use to judge "best swimmer of the year" (wiki never said ). that being, it's excluded all swimmers prior to 1980. thus, it is not definite that thorpe is the greatest of all time. and since he has not won in recent years, he is not necessarily the best during current times.

and thirdly, i said i do not consider him the "best swimmer around", but i did not say he wasn't "one of the best swimmers" around. the two phrases are quite different, are they not?

ok the 200m he has lost a few..the one i remember is he lost the 200m to Pieter Van De Hooganband in Sydney Olympics 2000, but the 400m he has never lost this even since his debut.

well here is where u misinterpret ChestNut original message. "best swimmer around" doesn't not translate to Greatest Swimmer Of All Time in my definition. So I agreed with ChestNut that he is one of the best swimmers around.

when you compare athletes, you compare them at their debut and their accomplishments at the peak of their performance. No point comparing an upcoming athlete with a veteran athlete.

Edit: just because your an aquatic animal doesnt give you the right to put down human swimmers

Okay then u dont that thrope is one of the 'best swimmers around'... then WHO would u call one of the best swimmers around?

Thorpe's first international win was 1998...it certainly hasn't been 10 years (especially considering he hasn't participated in major world competition since 2005).

if ur refering to being able to keep his records, there has certaininly been a large number of swimmers who have done quite a well. namely popov (though i'm only looking at olympic years since i have no details on his world champ records). of cos, we're only speaking of him to his peak (up until 1996 atlanta)

i thought we clarified that i never stated i thought thorpe isn't "one of the best", just not "the best". i mean, certainly u cannot call a guy who hold two world records not "one of the best"

yeah, totally. The Aussie women swimming team are great!!!

Oh and, yeah, S Beaver, you might not think Thorpe is the best swimmer around, but I do.. Plus why would u need to dominate all events to be the best swimmer anyway? Who the hell actually did that??

So much debate over Thorpe...I would regard him as one of the best freestyle swimmers of all time.

The Chinese dominate diving. I am so going to watch diving if I go to Beijing 2008

yeah i gotta agree with this one, no one so far can dominate all events, everyone has their own forte,

cheh, i didn't say one needs to dominate ALL events...i simply said Thrope only "dominated" two (and one in which he didn't quite dominate entirely), which is something quite a few other swimmers have done. thus, i don't think he's the best.

i do think swimmers who can at win in more than one stroke or two individual events are better.

    Like Michael Phelps Pool Shark.

He's the only sports figure I actually have a poster of in my room

I must admit that Australia has a very solid swimming team. I can drink up Ian Thorpedo like a glass of fine wine. - too bad he has retired from competitive swimming. But homegirl can't possibly cheer for the rival so I will pray for the American team to kick some @$$es.

Aussie, r u game for another wager?

Edit: there's nothing wrong with Sparky's taste for MP. He's a cute chap, just still too green. But he was definitely something special during the 2000 Summer Olympics.

i will wager you that Australia will win the Mens 1500m freestyle event

I think Australia's men swimming team is weak at the moment. There are no stand out swimmers among them except Grant Hackett (and he's a long distance specialist).

hahaha...the fact that u're not too confident in ur team makes this wager more exciting. I have high confidence in the American team.

    Name ur conditions, sweetheart.
