Default How did North Beggar Hung 7 Gung become a Great when he was so lazy?

North Beggar Hung 7 Gung was infamous for his laziness. Generally, he couldn't be bothered to do much. He liked nothing more than eating, drinking, and taking long naps.

For all this supposedly bad work ethic, however, he still managed to become one of the five greatest martial artists of his time. How was he able to do this? If we say that he was just talented, then imagine how good he *could* have been had he not been lazy?

Maybe he did practice but it wasnt really mentioned in the novel?? not too sure... During H7G's initial encounters with GJ and HR he did mention something along the lines of OYF maybe surpassing him because he had been pretty lazy while OYF had proboally trained hard.

That turned out not to be the case; they were deadlocked during that fight on Au Yeung Fung's yacht until Hung 7 Gung decided to do the decent thing and rescue Au Yeung Fung from a falling, burning topmast, putting himself at a disadvantge in the process.

If Hung 7 Gung could keep pace that well being *lazy*, it makes you wonder how good he might have been if he were actually diligent.

I think in the novel, it was mentioned that he loved martial arts, and was obsessed with it, hinting at why he isn't married (?).

I thought his reasoning for not being married was due to being a poor beggar?? He may have been talking in jest though I cant recall.

being lazy is a beggar's favourite pastime. else why begging? on a serious note though, hung7gung is actually a very smart person, and he likes to pretend he is stupid and lazy. wasnt he pretending to sleep when YG was confronting some bunch at a mountain? now, on his smart move he was testing YG while on his lazy side, why fight when he can watch and rest? how's that for a logic?

he probably had a good teacher who made him train hard. plus he was intelligent and talented. he probably became 'lazy' later in life after reaching great level. 'lazy' probably means he spent a great deal of time pursuing food instead of devoting himself relentlessly to martial arts, through he did not actually slack off on martial arts.

Its like XF, drinking all the time.

The time H7G spends eating and chasing food is probably = to the time XF spends drinking.

But they both still got tremendous growth.

Compared to MRF who trained hard everyday since he was a kid.

It's probably an outward image that he likes to maintain in order to lower others estimation of his abilities.

its also probably a good way (excuse) of delegating clan responsiblities so he can focus on special projects

Lazy? I don't think so. Ever wonder why he seems to be every where? A lazy person won't travel every where to save people. I think it is just an act.

It's the secret Beggar's Clan internal energy method. Forget power from enlightenment or gaining power in your sleep, with the Beggar Clan you get more power when you drink wine.

For the benefits see XF and H7G.

Hong Qi was born into slavery, he's probably no stranger to hard work. He brought up the fact that he was a slave to Guo Jing when they were on the island and Guo had to do hard work for Ouyang Feng. While he was certainly too lazy to study and read poetry, he loved martial arts and worked hard at some point in his life. By the time we see him in the novel, he had already mastered his art and mostly spent his time thinking of ways to beat the other Greats instead of practicing. Not much different than any of us who work on a particular skill. When we start we work hard, when we master it, we think more and work less.
