Mariah Carey is brilliant in terms of range and intonation and technique and all that but she's probably one of the most overrated wailing banshees in music industry.
She always ends up "doing the Mariah thing" because that's all she can do. I'm not really a fan of divas like Whitney or Celine - but those ladies at least can put a lot more drive, heart and soul into that saccharine crap they sing.
Carey's style is very shiny and very polished but utterly devoid of substance or expression. Whenever the misfortune of hearing her voice befalls me, I immediately need a dose of Cave or kargyraa or Alexandrov choir...or death metal growling.

She's got a good voice, but I feel like she misses a couple words at (sometimes) the end of some lines of the lyrics. Especially with Fighter, she didn't have enough air and so she skip some of the words to keep up with the music.

I noticed that too, but thought it might be because she forgot the lyrics or something? There were also some words that weren't clear enough.

She can't forget that many parts, I think it's her vocals that are at fault.

It's not the same without the saxophone, but it's still quite good.

I was just thinking about that when I saw the title of the thread.

Though I'm not fond of the lyrics, I like Far's cover of the song Pony originally by Ginuwine.

Original: Tong Hua - Guang Liang

Amateur (?) cover by J Rice and Jason Chen, with original lyrics in English and a lovely violin/trumpet part. While I don't think it's as good as the original, it is impressive. Especially at 2:13. Check this out!

J Rice and Jason Chen sing the song well and good improvisation. But, I agree that it's not as good as the original. They lack the emotional input. Guang Liang's rendition was very emotional. You really can feel his pain.

    1. The USSR's national anthem, recorded during the Cold War, unknown singers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLcc19mt4eA <-- the definition of awesomeness.

    2. The USSR's national anthem, performed by the Red Army Choir, possibly after the disintegration of the USSR:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdVTVR-j0Q <-- equally awesome

    3. The Russia Federation's anthem, which uses the music of the USSR's national anthem but has different lyrics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZwpA4L7bws <-- something is lacking, some of the soul seems to have been lost

    Bizarre Love Triangle
    Original - New Order: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r91OO...eature=related
    Cover - Frente!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ1c9ErCn7w

The original was typical 80s stuff (which I can't say I appreciate). Frente! cover is so much better.

    Blasphemy!

Like it or not, if you were there in the '80s and remember it well, New Order was anything, but typical.

Oh, but thank you for the video. I've never seen it before which is a miracle considering I spend hours hunting for New Order vids.

ahaha I guess not typical pop but typical (or everyone copied them after) synth electronic dance that you'd imagine when you say 80s electronic dance.
And the 80s was pretty heavy with that genre.
Just like how 90s was heavy with britpop.

My take on the renditions of the same song above is that new order's version doesn't fit the mood and tone of the song as well as frente! did it when you really think about what the song is about.

Yeah, that's typical New Order. In the same vain, there's one very good cover that I like as much as the original (I can't believe I'm typing this) and it's Iron & Wine's cover of New Order's Love Vigilantes.

I like both. I think much of New Order's material, including their videos, plays on strange juxtapositions. True Faith is a case in point, lyrics about drug dependency set to a bright dance track, and a video with a blue man jumping around.
