It's not a new trend, though. During the 1950s, the big rock 'n roll stars often covered each other's songs (i.e. Buddy Holly often did Elvis' and Chuck Berry's songs). Most 1960s pop stars covered a Beatles, Bob Dylan, or Motown tune that the original artists still had on the charts. Heck, Jimi Hendrix played "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" in concert two days after the Beatles released the album.

    All Souls Night

    Original:
    Loreena McKennitt

    Cover:
    Chyi (齊豫)

Both are good renditions but I prefer Chyi's version.

A song that was a hit three times over:

    "Without You"

    Badfinger's original 1971 version

    Nilsson's monster 1974 hit version

Twenty years later, Mariah Carey's 1994 modern version

Different reditions of 'Cheng Li De Yue Guang' (城裡的月光)

    Original
    Mavis Hee 許美靜

    Cover
    Fann Wong 范文芳
    Kelly Poon 潘嘉麗
    Nicholas Teo 張棟樑
    Ding Yi Fan 丁衣凡
    Melissa Ng 吳美珩
    Albert Au 區瑞強
    Xiao Huang Qi 蕭煌奇

    Remix
    Tank
    Vision Wei 魏晨
    Stanly Xu 許仁杰

Note: I just put Tank's and Vision's version under 'Remix' because the changes they made to the song are bigger and more obvious than the rest.

Queen - We will rock you

Five feat Queen - We will rock you

Five's version added some hip hop feel to the song, and a bunch of random rapping which I found annoying. Nothing beats Queen's original anthem.

Here's a song that should sound very familiar to many people.

    ORIGINAL
Southern All Stars - Manatsu no Kajitsu (真夏の果実)
    COVERS
Jacky Cheung - 每天爱你多一些 (Loving you more everyday)
Bonnie Pink - Manatsu no Kajitsu (真夏の果実 duet ver.)

Fiona Sit & Khalil Fong - 復刻回憶

Manatsu no Kajitsu is one of my favourite songs by Southern All Stars, Keisuke Kuwata is nothing short of a genius song writer.
There's another version recently done by a Japanese r&b group, unfortunately, I can't find a streaming video of it anywhere. But the point is, there are many renditions of the song around, the list is not exhaustive. Jacky Cheung's version is excellent, but the original is equally, if not more, awesome.

    ---------------------

Here's another song that should sound familiar to Eric Suen's (孙耀威) fans, the original is sung by Southern All Stars. As much as Eric Suen's version is well known, his voice simply can't compare to Kuwata's, the original is much much better, both in terms of singing and arrangment.

    ORIGINAL
Southern All Stars - Namida no kiss (涙のキッス)
    COVER
Eric Suen - Ren shi ni zhen hao (认识你真好)

Yeah, thanks, I forgot it. Madonna with her crappy electronica music and soulless singing voice messed up the song though.

For the first time ever, I was attentive to the lyrics of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and unless I'm missing something, I find them very stupid, even retarded.

They're not the best lyrics, but Nirvana isn't really about their lyrics or even music composition for that matter. It's more about a movement and influence at the right time, sort of like the Sex Pistols.

Yeah, I get where you're getting at. The Sex Pistols and punk spawned much better artists though. After grunge, we got post-grunge bands like Creed and Nickelback .

i don't think I'll ever consider putting Creed or Nickelback as grunge. They're just crap.

When Nirvana first emerged on the scene in the early 1990s, I also thought they were overrated and overhyped. While I still believe they are probably overhyped, I no longer believe that they are overrated. Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Noveselic were excellent musicians and interpreters of song. They clearly understood pop song dynamics, and Cobain's compositions occassionally rose to the level of those of his idol, John Lennon.
