It's not a new trend, though. During the 1950s, the big rock 'n roll stars often covered each other's songs (i.e. Buddy Holly often did Elvis' and Chuck Berry's songs). Most 1960s pop stars covered a Beatles, Bob Dylan, or Motown tune that the original artists still had on the charts. Heck, Jimi Hendrix played "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" in concert two days after the Beatles released the album.
