Original - Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is

    Cover rendition
Mariah Carey - I Want to Know What Love Is

I heard Mariah's version and well it started out okay but on the higher notes she's doing the Mariah again and well I didn't really like it for this song. The original version is still better.

    What do you guys think?

I knew it! I knew there was something different with Mariah's version. She took out some parts of the lyrics. I felt something lacked from her rendition.

    Foreigner's lyrics:

I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I'm older
    Aaaah woah-ah-aah

Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
And through the clouds I see love shine
It keeps me warm as life grows colder

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far
    To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me
    Aaaah woah-oh-ooh

I'm gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me, oooh ooh-ooh ooh-ooh oooh
I've got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
I can't stop now, I've traveled so far
    To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me
I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
And I wanna feel, I want to feel what love is
And I know, I know you can show me

    Let's talk about love
(I wanna know what love is) the love that you feel inside
(I want you to show me) I'm feeling so much love
(I wanna feel what love is) no, you just cannot hide
(I know you can show me) yeah, woah-oh-ooh
I wanna know what love is, let's talk about love
(I want you to show me) I wanna feel it too
(I wanna feel what love is) I wanna feel it too
And I know, and I know, I know you can show me
Show me what is real, woah (woah), yeah I know
(I wanna know what love is) hey I wanna know what love
(I want you to show me), I wanna know, I wanna know, want know
(I wanna feel what love is), hey I wanna feel, love
I know you can show me, yeah

I swear, I hear her singing "In case when I am colder" not "older". It didn't make sense.

I heard that too! So it's not just my ears. Foreigner's version is definitely better. Mariah's rendition is...what's a good way to put it, hmm...Bad! Heh.

Because I adore Faith No More and Mike Patton:

    Original:
    The Commodores - Easy:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UHfu4w7jS8
    Cover:
    Faith No More - Easy:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AuhTr2AAQQ
    I like both equally.

    Original:
    Bee Gees - I Started a Joke:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2HOiMeDOrs
Faith No More - I Started a Joke:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9Oq0sWYU3o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qTUBBQfL5M (live version, just because it shows Mike).
I really like both versions. I enjoy the acoustic intro for Bee Gees, and it suits the singer's voice well. I guess if I had to pick, I'd pick the FNM version, because as much as I like Bee Gees, Mike's deep voice just pulls me in. I have a preference for deep voices in general.
    Because I'm somewhere in between,
    My love and my agony.

I really like covers by Albert Kuvezin & Yat-Kha...
My absolute fave is Love Will Tear Us Apart - which I actually like better than the original version by Joy Division... (And I do like the original quite a lot.)

    The Greatest Love of All

    Original - Whitney Housten

    Cover - Junsu (TVXQ)

Despite the accent and the the hint of Korean style of singing, I really love Junsu's rendition of the song.

Wow. I'm sorry but throat singing with this song is a bad idea IMO; it feels like a joke. Needless to say, I prefer Joy Division's versions.
My obsessions: Joy Division, New Order, Bones, The Office.

I think most people would agree with you.
I dunno why I like Kuvezin's version better, but I do. There's a different dimension to it (to a point where it basically becomes a totally different song) and I guess it just - um - resonates with me better...:-)

    No Love Lost

    Original:
    Joy Division

    Cover:
    LCD Soundsystem

I prefer the original but I don't dislike the cover. It's one of the rare covers that is able to keep more or less the same tempo and tone and still sound different.

    Temptationt

    Original:
    New Order

    Cover:
    Jukebox the Ghost

Not a great cover but kinda fun.
My obsessions: Joy Division, New Order, Bones, The Office.

I heard a cover of Eurythmics' song, "Sweet Dreams" on the radio, but this cover was a more rock version. Anyone have any idea what band did this cover? It was OK, but some parts of the vocal and electric guitar was a bit much. Original version is better.

i also heard a girl version of TI's you can have whatever you like, and that was pretty good.

Was it Marilyn Manson? They did a creepy rock version during the late 1990s.

First, the bad renditions. Yolanda Yan offers a weak rendition here, but its averageness is nothing compared to the horrendous hackjob Shirley Kwan makes of it, beautifully lyrical song, reduced to the usual whisper schtick that she does for every other of her songs. For a non-Japanese version, the best I've found is this by Hayley Westenra, where she accurately rerenders the song, lyrics as well as music, to her own style. Unsurprisingly, Masashi Sada nails the song here, being the original author. The best versions though, are those by the original performer Momoe Yamaguchi, whom Sada wrote this for. Studio version here, but live versions are just as good, with her final performance especially emotional as she finally gets what Sada was writing about.

I just youtubed the song and yes, it is Marilyn Manson's version. The music video is quite creepy. I don't follow Manson's music much, never have.

Marilyn Manson's music is...not great. I sort of enjoyed the horror movie vibe of that music video, but in actual musical terms...eh.

    純文藝的戀愛 (Pure Artistic Love)

    Original: Wung Wang Qing (吳旺慶)

    Cover 1: Auguste Kwan (關德輝)

    Cover 2: Ah Niu (阿牛)

Original was good, but, I felt that Ah Niu's cover was better. He sings with a lot of feelings and listener can really feel it. When, I first heard Auguste's rendition, I felt that it's bad. But, listening to it the second time now, it's not that bad. I can appreciate it more now. But, Ah Niu's cover is still the best. All 3 gave a different feel to the song.

    Original: Angela Zhang Shaohan

Rendition: Cai Aijia - Bu Tong
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBa8eOrfsK4

Sounds way better than the original singer, IMO. I believe this is the way the song should have turned out. Angela's voice can be quite brittle, making her unsuitable for songs where the emotions (and power) must be released to attain its top listening potential.

    I prefer Foreigner's version too. Mariah's R & B style doesn't blend with the song. It's too off.

I think your " she's doing the Mariah again" comment is funny.
