Default Was Ling Wu Chung fragile or just unlucky?

Probably no other hero in the wuxia canon was ever injured more than Ling Wu Chung was. It seemed like he spent 80% of the story of STATE OF DIVINITY fighting one injury or another. A fully healthy Ling Wu Chung was a rare sight in SOD.

Now the heroes of the various other Jin Yong stories also took their share of lumps, but none of them was injured as often as Ling Wu Chung was. Was Ling Wu Chung just unlucky, or was he more fragile than the others?

Maybe its Jin Yong's idea of testing LingHu Chong, to see if a carefree character like LHC can remain carefree when the weight of injuries is always upon him?

I'd better call it a night. Good night all!

Nah.... a martial person cannot be fragile... as for being unlucky, well, he was unlucky in love... the first hero to lose his girl as someone famously quoted (forgot who ) injury wise, he was always wrong place wrong time with wrong people. didnt himself quoted something about bad luck when he met some people along his way... (forgot who again )

Irony of "state of divinity" and LHC being highly vulnerable until RWX laughed himself to death.

LHC was just unlucky - he was poisoned/internal turmoil for most of the book. The only other incident was him saving a nun.

LHC started out a crappy fighter. No other JY protagonist except Xu Zhu of DGSD was still at a mediocre martial arts skill level while already having reached his mid 20's. So first and foremost it is not unusual if he were to sustain serious injury in combat.

Then you look at his injuries. He got seriously injured by Tian Bo Guang while saving Yilin. Then that mofo from Qingcheng Sect took advantage and nearly fatally wounded him.

Then the 6 Fairies and Yilin's dad tried to "cure" him and screwed him over real badly. Then he was "cured" by Ren Wo Xing's Star Absorbing kungfu, only to find himself in another mess as that kungfu has complications as well.

In conclusion, he was definitely not fragile. Perhaps a bit unlucky but it wasn't like he was crossing a bridge and suddenly the bridge collapsed.

More like he was crossing a bridge, the bridge starts collapsing, and then he's "saved" by the Peach Fairies except they ran off in four directions after each catching him.

    Poor LHC.

Actually, he was the top persona in his generation within the known SOD. Even before DG9J he has been toying with the people of his generation from other schools. Some are even considered "star pupils" IIRC.
Burying his Dugu 9 Jian manual under an epitaph, Dugu Qiubai felt he has left his legacy for the next generation. He then moved to Shaolin to study Buddhism, sweep floors and tap elite fighters.

LHC is too sensitive, that makes him easy to hurt. Maybe he is a pisces.

There's no way his kungfu can be considered "tops" within the wulin world. To be considered top, you have to be at least top 15. When I say mediocre, I mean that he's in that middle of the pack area among fighters whose skills are enough to warrant some attention.

By LHC's age, GJ was already around top 5. YG was in the top 10. XF was top 10 as well, and he had a lot more competition. HF was 1 or 2 when he was 25. Even Di Yun was number 1 already. Etc. etc.

WITHIN HIS GENERATION. Which he was. The so called "Five Aces" he could own with a single kick. Of course he couldn't defeat his seniors.

Just because SOD lacked second generation talent, it doesn't make LHC any good by default. It's like that someone of average intelligence attending a special ed class and gets straight A's. It doesn't mean he's smart, it just means he's least stupid.

Pre-DG9J, LHC was nowhere near top level. TBG remarked as much. Note that TBG's fighting skills aren't even that good and he easily disposed of LHC.

Since LHC's skills are so mediocre, it's very easy for him to run into someone better and become injured in battle.

With DG9J, he went from Beau Bridges to Brad Pitt overnight.
