    Default Rock Paper Scissors

In wuxia, usually if fighter A is better than fighter B and fighter B is better than fighter C, then fighter A is automatically better than fighter C.

In real life, it doesn't quite work that way. Sometimes an athlete or team might match up better vs 1 team than another. Such as in the NFL where the Houston Texans beat the Jacksonville Jaguars twice, the Jaguars clobbered the Jets, and the Jets crushed the Texans.

Are there any examples of this in wuxia where fighter A can beat fighter B who can beat fighter C who can beat fighter A?

Ah, contradictions and factual screw-ups -- my favorite topic of late. I can think of a few:

    1. Yang Guo thinks Yang Guo < Yideng, while Yideng thinks Yang Guo > Yideng (chapter 34, ROCH).

    2. This is slightly more complicated.

Jiumozhi > 5 Dali monks (JMZ still winning)
Xiao Feng < 5 Dali monks (or 5 Duan Yanqing's)
based on above, Jiumozhi > Xiao Feng
Jiumozhi = unable to injure Xuzhu
Xiao Feng = forced Xuzhu to block
based on above, Xiao Feng > Jiumozhi

    3. Based on third edition of DGSD, 3 Xuan generation monks =~ 4 to 5 Dali monks. And yet:

Ding Chunqiu >= 1 Xuan monk (Xuannan)
    Ding Chunqiu >= Murong Fu
    Duan Yanqing > Murong Fu

Originally, it seems that Ding Chunqiu > Xuan monk > Duan Yanqing, but based on above it seems that Ding > Xuan > Duan > Ding. There, one rock paper scissors cycle has been discovered.

I think it exists in wuxia as well. It has to deal with the pros and cons of your style and characteristic. Your style/characteristic may match up well aganist certain fighters but poorly against others. Because Yang Guo has only one arm (a characteristic), he would have a really tough time against Guo Jing and his L/R technique. But that's not to say that Guo Jing would necessarily perform better against other fighters than Yang Guo would against them. So that's one example.

Good point. That situation is somewhat present in Naruto with Taijustu specialists having an edge over Genjustu specialists, who themselves have an edge over Ninjitsu specialists, who can trounce Taijustu specialists.

In Wuxia, lady Fat Buddha could beat Li XunHuan due to her body's fatal spots being impervious to being pierced by the dagger, yet she would probably lose to Yin Ku and his poisonous glove. Li XunHuan can easily defeat Yin Ku.

Linghu Chong would have lost agaisnt the 2nd Jiangnan Playfellow had he launched his 361 projectiles backed by inner power. Yet Chong had the advantage against the eldest Playfellow because his specialty turned someone's vast inner power into a hindrance, yet Chong had no functional inner power.
