which version is this? I saw one online but it is classified as erotic, so I kind of hesitate to buy it.
can anyone post the poster of this one or stated the cast list?

Goofy: that poster looks like a Hong Kong porn film, especially with Tsui Kam Kong in it. I can't imagine what you would think if you have bought that movie.
Anyway, there's a link in the review to Yesasia for the series. I can't remember who was in the series but they all look very young, like teenagers.
But here is the poster again

Actually, reading the novel is better than watching the adaptation. Since I like the poems in the novel. I didn't think Daiyu was properly portrayed in the series. I didn't really feel sorry for her character as much as when i read the book.

Yes, I know. I'm eaily amused by these things. I really need to grow up...
Anyway, I agree with TKL. As far as I know, the only adaptation of the book is the old mainland version.
I'm kinda surprised that HK actually made those films (porn) back then. Quite interesting how movies can have the same titles, and be completely different genres.
I read this novel when I was taking a class in college. It is a sad but good novel. There is also another series made by TVB based on this novel back in the 70s. It starred Liza Wang and Wu Wai Guo. I saw the mainland series too. It was ok but not the best adaption. It started out being very accurate to the novel and then changed for the worse. I was disappointed with the mainland adaption. It had the potential of being a good adaption but they changed the plot too much in the middle and the end. The ending to the series was really stupid.

do you recommend the mainland's old version or tvb old very short version?
Is there any other newer versions release out there?
I agree. The Lin Daiyu in the series cried too much, seemed too self-absorbed and narrow-minded for me to feel much sympathy for her. I liked Bao jie jie a lot better.Originally posted by TKL

Haha, Lin Daiyu seems self-absorbed and self-pitying to me in the book too (I read the english translation). Even in the book I like Bao Chai more. Li Daiyu always goes, 'poor me, I'm so pitiful". She also seems very 'xiao qi'.I agree. The Lin Daiyu in the series cried too much, seemed too self-absorbed and narrow-minded for me to feel much sympathy for her. I liked Bao jie jie a lot better.
True, but she seems even worse when portrayed from the book in the television series. She would always be unnecessarily jealous about everything Bao Yu did. She caused her own death IMO since her 'xin yian' was so small. And what also bothered me was that they were...cousins...in fact, most of them were related somehow, right?Originally posted by kidd

I know that it was an accepted practice back then, probably because no one knew of any medical risks, etc. However, knowing what we do now, it's rather disturbing.Originally posted by Arisa

I guess people back then didn't know that much. But are they really close cousins? I thought they were a bit distant. But still it's is kinda sickOriginally posted by Lady Zhuge

In case you guys didn't know, Dai Yu is supposed to cry a lot. In the novel, she is the reincarnation of the Cassia flower. bao yu was the rock that saved her using a lot of water. Since she owed him a debt. She reincarnated in to a person to pay her debt. She had to use a lifetime of human tears to repay him. That's why she had to cry herself to death... Seems wierd, the point in the story was, if you owe someone from another life. You will have to pay them back in a different life. These are all buddhist ideas since this story is based on Buddhist beliefs.

Actually, there has been the latest version that made by Taiwan (CTS) I've watched last year but I think it done in year 2000 or older, I'm not sure and I don't know the main cast except for Truong Phi Yen (play as green snake in Madame white snake Singapore) who play as Lin Dai Yu
Here is the poster of this version
The Jia Bao Yu in that version looks really young, as though he were Lin Dai Yu's little bro or something. Personally, I really liked the Jia Bao Yu from the old mainland version. He had a cute baby face and fit the role very well. Does anyone know who the actor was or of any of his other works?Originally posted by pookagege

my fav is Wang Xi Feng in this story. she portrayed xi feng really well..
for characters in story, i like Bao chai better than Dai Yu. Dai Yu is too sensitive, if she were a real life person, i would be afraid to talk to her.
