I don't follow this sport, but it's funny how you assumed "Vietnam will finish bottom". Are they that bad?

yes it's all about soccer a.k.a football. these groups will give asian football lovers with serious competition, i believe. especially in group a, where thailand is one of the strongest in south east asia. but yeah, after watching world cup 2006, i can predict nothing ... all things are possible here ...

Unfortunately, compared to the other teams in the group I fear they will strugle.

Mini T-Mac: Yep. Pretty much spot on. Possibly Saudi Arabia ahead of Korea. It can go either way Group D.

Yep. I pretty much agree with this assessment. It will be interesting once the group stages are over. Australia vs Japan could be a real possibility.

Matches so far... And All three have been somewhat of upsets.

Thailand drew 1-all with Iraq. Iraq really should've won this. Thai goalkeeper kept Thailand in the match.

Oman drew 1-all with Australia. A huge shock, considering Australia only equalised with three or four minutes left on the clock. Oman completely outplayed Australia. A shamble performance by us. Kewell, Viduka and Bresciano were inefective. Should've brought on Nicky Carle.

Vietnam BEAT UAE 2-0. That's right, BEAT UAE! Being of Viet herritage, I was proud of Vietnam's win. Although UAE really should've scored a few. Viet goalie Hong Son was a gun, took everything and most probably the incumbancy from Quang Huy.

Further results to be posted as the tournament continues on.

Japan draws 1-all with Qatar, but in reality Japan should've won. That leaves the groups as the following:

    Group A ----- P-----W----D-----L----GD-----Pts
    Australia-----1------0----1-----0-----0------1
    Iraq---------1------0----1-----0-----0------1
    Oman--------1------0----1-----0-----0------1
    Thailand-----1------0----1-----0-----0------1

    Group B ----- P-----W----D-----L----GD-----Pts
    Vietnam------1------1----0-----0-----2------3
    Japan--------1------0----1-----0-----0------1
    Qatar--------1------0----1-----0-----0------1
    UAE----------1------0----1-----0-----0------0

Long way to go. Can't say much from first match appearances.

But boy did Australia look like a tired team against Oman. But they will get better and better. The fact they never gave up and clinched a draw shows the fighting spirits of the boys. I think Australia will still make the Finals.

On the other matches, all I can say is congrats to Vietnam for playing a highly entertaining match. Never write off host teams - particulary playing behind such passionate and vocal fans.

Japan - someone hire a shooting coach. A 3 year old kid (or Tim Cahill) from Europe would have slotted home some of the chances that they miss. That's the difference between Japan and a class outfit I'm afraid.

In another shock, Indonesia defeated Bahrain 2-1. This tournament really is throwing up some surprises. it's nice to see.
China 5-1 Malaysia. No surprises here, and probably the only result so far that was expected.

Tonight Iran and Uzbekistan play in Malaysia, whilst South Korea take on Saudi Arabia in the biggest match of the tournament thus far, and most likely the biggest in all of the group stages.

Yep, the boys will. But it's got to be concerning when we did not even play like we were professionals. No creativity from midfield and Dukes and Vinnie Grella looked gone long before halftime. But as you say, still two games to go. I know a lot of fans are calling for Arnold's heads now. But we'll wait and see.

To my country MALAYSIA, the only host country to LOSE in the first game.

Realistically, Japan, Australia, China are the favourites although Japan/Australia certainly did not do well at all in the first round.

Well, Australia is going to have to beat Thailand by at least 4 goals next match to go through.

    Good luck with that.

Oz lost to Iraq- do you still think that they can proceed to the knockout stage?

When compared to COPA, asian teams seems to be so much more technically deficient.

    Go Australia! Socceroos.

By the way, Harry Kewell isnt all that in my opinion.

Oh heck, Malaysia loses 5-0 to Uzbekistan. So they're not satisfied merely being are the only home team to lose their first game, now they have to go get themselves totally humiliated as well.

A little less attention to the Man Utd tour and more to the state of domestic football, thank you. It's time to get couch-potato kids up, cut down the EPL watching, and start playing football.
