I think there was a discomfort so they stopped practicing it and it was Lin Ping Zhi who told them about the castration detail and thus, the ZLC castrated himself but didn't get far with learning it I think.

You'll be surprised at what some people would do for fame, recognition, and money. A couple years back, a friend of mine told me about some sorta "pain olympics". In one particular scenario, a man chopped off his ding-dong in front of thousands of people just for a shot of winning the tournament. I don't know if the prize money was anywhere near 50 million though. No source because I'm afraid of searching and ending up with vivid pictures of the castration from google, but I'm sure the information's out there if you want to look for it.

Characters from SPW are insane. They would do anything for power. Characters from LOCH are much much better.

LPZ is an idiot for throwing away his happiness with his love and he is also a very unfilial son. He is the only survivor of the Lin family so the continuity of the Lin family should be way more important than vengeance. If he is intelligent, he would use other means for revenge. He could easily use YBQ to go after his enemies while stay safe in Huashan.
