Default Sad Endings Vs Happy Endings

Do you prefer tear-jerkers at the end of a movie such as Tristan and Isolde or Titanic? Do you prefer happily ever after such as Snow White and Cinderella?

For me IMO I love tragic stories where its sad at the end, whether one character dies or something. I just find that there's more emotional meaning and it's more dramatic.

    - recent favorite drama: The Princess's Man

I'm a bit of a romantic daydreamer. Generally, I hate to be haunted by the sad ending of such tearjerkers after watching those as: Forest Gump, Philadelphia, The Snowman, Love Story... even though they're excellent films.
So certainly I'd choose Happy ending.

i think if a sad ending is needed for the story to take on more meaning then yeah, tearjerker endings are best (like in titanic) but i think some films just add sad endings to their stories for no reason and thats when it gets annoying

Happy endings never seem realistic to me. But then, open endings bug me, even if they're done beautifully, just because I'm too curious for my own good and want to know what happened in the end lol.

Sad endings are too sh1t and overused nowdays.
Usually tragedy is used as an easy escape route to end complicated situations which means the director is a useless gorilla fused with buffalo brains.

In conclusion, sad endings can suck my big fat pinky.

Happy. I'd settle for bittersweet, too. Can't stand sad endings. Beats the whole purpose of watching movies for me.

I have no personal preference. Any type of ending is fine with me as long as it's nicely done up, not overly exaggerated or bland.

    Same goes for everything.
If every moofie you watch starts off happily enough and in the middle reaches the happiness climax and always ends in gay sadness you get depressed and become emo.

    I too like open endings.

Personally, I hate the typically "boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, they go on a date, fall madly in love, [insert tragic misunderstanding], boy gets back with girl - they live happily ever after"
I'm cold, wet and incredibly grouchy.

    Majority of movies today:
SCENARIO #1 - What you just said: "boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, they go on a date, fall madly in love, tragic misunderstanding, get back together, happily ever after"

SCENARIO #2 - "boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl, girl contracts terminal cancer and dies"

I can't say I prefer either. While happy endings tend to make me feel better, it depends on the nature of the story. Like, if the movie is tragic 99% of the time but suddenly has a happy ending, that just makes the movie suck. If it was meant to be a tragedy, then let it be a tragedy.

I like sad endings usually, but if it doesn't turn out the way I like it, I can always think of another one to satisfy myself. ^^

^^ Personally that's the film plot that I like most.

I grew up watching movies/series with happy ending, im sick of those so i'd naturally go for the sad ending where either the hero or the heroine dies.... nothing to do with the emotional thingy, i just dont like seeing the happily-ever-after theme cuz there are so many of them that ive seen.....

one of my favourite sad endings is Romance of White Hair Maiden, no, neither of them died, but they didnt end up together too... okay, that was series, but i dont remember the ending of Bride with White Hair, im not sure if it stayed faithful to the novel, so there you go!

Ending of The Matrix trilogy is cool too, unexpected, but cool!

It depends on what the theme is and is giving that type of relevant according the plot so far and the nature of what the characters are going through. If it makes sense for such ending. But I hate endings that try way too hard that you can see that it so flat out. This goes for both movies/ tv series.
