that's because when men do something nice for women they instictly think the guy is hitting on them... this is why we don't do anything nice for women (atleast for the ones we aren't planning to hit on)...Originally Posted by Suet Seung

it annoys the crap out of me when people try to use "big words" to try to make themselves sound smarter, when it's obvious he/she doesn't know what the word means. i've heard people say:
"i feel so molested."
"he's so mean. he uses a lot of condensation."
"i've been trying to go to the bathroom all day. i think i have conception."
"i saw him 3 times today. he's so ubiquitous."
i want to scream, shut up! you sound like an idiot!

1. ppl running to take window seats in the airplane...damn, my laptop almost fell because of these inconsiderate ppl....all right that might be their first flight, but please, mind the manners, let the person in front of you take a seat first rather than pushing them into their seats. if i were a senior citizen they'd knocked me off the isle...
2. young teenagers who wont give up their seats to senior citizens and pregnant women.
3. ppl who shake their legs in cinemas, bumping the seat in front of them in the process.
4. ppl who cant seem to understand what 'Turn your mobiles off' signs and adverts in the cinemas means.
5. ppl who like giving their personal review while watching movies.
6. ppl who have this patch of saliva at the corner of their mouth when theyre talking...gross!

I used to give up my seat to, open doors for, etc every girl and woman -- attractive or not -- because it was the gentlemanly thing to do. Now, I don't. I now understand that woman should be treated equally and should not use their sex as an entitlement for special treatment -- having their cake and eating it too. I've seen women give up their seats for small boys, old men and men with babies. These are 'women', and I've given them my seats. Except in a case like her stop was coming up, never have I seen one give up her seat to a young, and especially attractive, male she doesn't know. Never.
My 'fair and balanced' philosophical approach to the sexes only applies to strangers. Girls and women I know always get the royal treatment.

i used to take the subway everyday in boston (before it got really crappy this year), and i agree with what you're saying, southern crane, about the sense of entitlement. being female isn't a disability, and just because a guy doesn't give a woman his seat doesn't make him a douche.
that being said, do i appreciate when a guy gives me his seat? of course. especially the times when i've spent the whole day in 4 inch heels. but i'm sure a dude would appreciate it if a woman gave up her seat for him. so, i think it's still a gentlemanly thing to do. even if it's outdated and there's no good reason for it and blah blah. it's still a nice gesture.

This is a pompous sexist bias remark. The assumption that women feel entitled to "special treatment" is over-generalized. I don't consider myself a feminazi, but I do support women rights and advocate for genders equality. Though, just because I believe that women should be treated fairly and equally to men does not forsake my standards and expectations of good quality manners from the opposite sex. I don’t have an expectation that men should open the doors for women. However, giving the choice between one who does and one who does not, I would give more credits to the person who acted like a gentleman. Geez, why is it such a big deal nowadays to expect a man to behave like a well-mannered gentleman?its women's mentality that they want equality - yet they still want 'special treatment'
Some people just need to quit whining and pointing fingers at women and concentrate on getting game – without game, the only women they will ever get closed are the ones on their computer screens.
I'm a very strong support of women's rights, too. That's why I no longer give up my seat to healthy, able-bodied young girls and women anymore. I've got more respect for them not to give into the double standard of expecting to be treated equally and being entitled to anything just because of their sex.Originally Posted by bellamia
And imo girls should expect their boyfriends and other guys familiar to them to be gentlemen, not strangers. In the end, I agree it really is about sex. Girls are more attracted to gentlemen and gentlemanly behavior than otherwise -- even from strangers. I've got more respect for them ('you') not to give into that. $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/yes.gif')
Again, I don't think anyone's a bigger gentleman than I am, and I really enjoy being so. But just to girls and women I know. As for the rest, I now work on the assumption that they want to be treated equally and don't have any 'sexist' expectations of me or any other men they don't know..

its noble and endearing that you believe in true altruism - but the fact of the matter is 99% of the time, there is some expectation for doing somethingOriginally Posted by bellamia
That's what it means to be equal - no special treatment. You dont expect women to give up seats for the men, so logically (going by equality) - men shouldn't give up their seat either. Manners has nothing to do with being sexist or equality.Originally Posted by bellamia
if manners equates to giving women special treatment - then you're really implying women NEED special treatment because they're the weaker incapable sex?
In Pemberly's scenario - first in first serve shouldn't be the norm, but the exception for the men seated. They should give up their seat to damsels like Pemberly in her 4" heels. Hey Pemberly you can have my seat (without any strings attached) because it's not your fault that you need to look sexy and appealing to attract the opposite sex in that 4" heels of yours

Sometimes people read too much into a situation and entwine complication into an uncomplicated matter. Going back to the example of giving up seat to another person...the only time that both genders should adopt this practice is for the benefit of disabled people, elderly people, visibly pregnant women, or children. In this regard, women should not expect only men to extend the courtesy, but they themselves have to contribute to good citizenry. Besides, act of kindness is not limited and/or encouraged based on gender line.Originally Posted by NetDriftr
I’ve never claimed such a thing so don’t attempt to put words in my mouth. Mannerism has nothing to do with gender equality in the context of my argument. Expecting men to behave like well-mannered gentlemen is the same as the opposite sex expecting women to behave ladylike. Accordingly, feminism does not promote women to adopt obnoxious unmanly behaviors such as burping and farting in public, talking with an open-mouth full of food, smashing beer cans against one’s forehead becos it’s a cool thing to do. Thus, well-mannered are valued and encouraged from both genders, not just men. Again, why is it so difficult to expect men to behave like gentlemen when women are expected to act feminine and ladylike? The principle is not about gender equality but a double standard in expectations.if manners equates to giving women special treatment - then you're really implying women NEED special treatment because they're the weaker incapable sex?

Hmm.. I still think it has a lot to do with sex and attraction. As a young heterosexual girl or woman, how would you feel if upon entering a crowded bus or subway if another girl or woman (a stranger to you) gave up her seat for you for no obvious reason at all?
As a guy, I'd feel weird under the same situation with another guy (a stranger to me). Sure, it's a nice gesture I'd likely refuse. Either way, I couldn't help but wonder...
