Cool snow is red

is there a more positive view of this series?

I wanted to buy it out of impression from princess chang ping, but it didn't sound so good in the review.

I think this is one of the better produced ancient dramas of the 90s. Kristy Yang gave a great performance in here as Mei Jiangxue but sadly speaking, this is the first and only serial where she has left a deep impression on viewers.

Go for it. I think its definitely worth watching.
Please visit the sites dedicated to the TV dramas, Mainland CCTV Xiao Ao Jiang Hu 笑傲江湖 and HK ATV Heroine of the Yangs 穆桂英 respectively. Thanks!!

I do agree this is one of the better late 90's ancient series. I like the first couple of episodes simply cuz Michelle Mei and Keung Tai Wei were in them. Later on, Kristy Yeung's role is actually good. She's one of the sensible ppl in the entire series. Really smart and witty and cute. I hate it that the scriptwriter screwed her character up and she has to have such a tragic story. But I am contented because Fong Siu Nam is such a retard and so is Kang Suet's lil sis and they deserve each other.

I just didn't like the relationship that David Keung Da Wei and Mimi Kung had. Neither did I like the Alice-Andrew-Kristy relationship either..it's just very messed up.

I really feel sorry for Lawerence Yan Chi Keung and his lover/wife's relationship. I like the hairdo and clothes he wore when he first met his lover and the one he appeared in black 16 years after.

Overall, I didn't like the series!

Except the Themesong was okay and the sub song was great and the flute music that Kristy played was good! Those are the only redeeming factor I like but for the storyline...bleh...I could care less..

This is one of the few series that I didn't like that much. First part was okay but the last half was kind of boring. The whole love triangle thing was not great, I was not touched. Couldn't even sympathize with any of them. The only person I felt sorry for was Mimi, kind of wanted her to win the fight.

I felt sorry for Mimi Kung, at the very last moment when she lost everything. All she wanted was for David Keung to say he loved her even if it was a lie but the guy refused to say so. I think if he would've said he loved her but didn't have enough courage in the past to admit it, then I think she wouldn't have killed herself.

The love relationship between Kristy, Andrew and Alice was sooo boring, I wanted all 3 of them to go their separate ways. If Kristy's baby had lived would Andrew have chosen to be with her or still stick with Alice? What a loser for a hero.

I posted another review earlier, but it's not out yet. I personally didn't find the series so bad. Watch it with a remote control and you'd be fine.

Kristy Yeung's performance here was memoriable. I suspect this is because of the character of the role itself, and not because of the acting per se. I felt that she didn't manage to quite bring out the essence of Jiangxue, though she tried. But Jiangxue is so likeable, and you feel sort of sad that she doesn't end up with the man that she wants. But the man that she likes, Fang Zhaonan, is such a total idiot, you feel relieved in a strange way that her really irritating twin sister Xuangshuang got him instead of Jiangxue. :P

i really didn't like this series.. the only thing good was the theme song and ending song played at end of each episode.. i didn't like kristy yang and i don't think she's all that pretty.. carmen lee is pretty but i didn't like her character, the helpless, needy girl that always cries to andrew yuen.. i really cannot stand that guy with the round bulging eyes.. he's really evil looking and makes you go, gee i wonder whos the bad guy in this series is!? hehe.. ok enough ranting and stuff.. maybe you have diff opinion of this series but i don't.. skip it! waste of money..

This series belongs in the neutral pile. The first half was great, the second half...well, not so great. The first half, by far, had better acting. In the second half, I didn't like Andrew's character because he didn't take responsibility for his actions.

What's Princess Chang Ping got to do with this series?
Anyway, I don't think the series is worth buying. I agree with most of the things the reviewer said. The series started out good. The story of the first generation is interesting and well acted. But the story of the second generation, which is the main part of the series, is draggy and repeatative plus the hero of the second story is the most irresposible, spineless hero I have ever seen. Example of repeatative plot, Nip Siu Fung thought up a plan to takeover the martial world/destroy to 'good' guys, but is twarted by her student Mui Kong Suet (who have inside info of course and the fact that she is the most loved student of Siu Fung, thus Siu Fung forgive her again and again). She thought up another plan, and again Mui Kwong Suet twarted it. So, she never succeeded in her plan. The love triangle between the hero (Fong Siu Nam) and the 2 twin sisters (Mui Kong Suet and Chan Yuan Seung) are also frustrating. As I say below the hero is spineless and reseposible. He has a one night stand with Kong Suet, and he ask her to leave her sect and turn to the good side and said he will take care of her. So she did, and lost her kungfu and got beaten because of it (sect rules). And she later got attacked by the 'good' guys and can't defend herself (no kungfu). And through all this the hero was no where to be found. And the younger twin Chan Yuen Seung whom the hero truly love, is a really anoying individual. She is prejudice, weak, whiny, not to mention a very unsympathetic person. And lastly, Mui Kong Suet is too sacrificing. A lot of the time, I really want to shake her and tell her 'stop betraying your teacher and sacrificing for this guy, he is not worth it'. I was so glad that she didn't end up with Fong Siu Nam. She deserve better. Plus the acting of the young actors are still raw, so the second generation part is not as well acted as the first generation.
The only good thing in the second story is Mui Kong Suet, Lip Siu Fung and Chan Tin Seung (Chan Yuen Seung's foster father).
I really sympatize with Lip Siu Fung. Everyone just though of her as this evil woman. Even in the end she get no sympathy and understanding from even one person (who though Kong Suet should/would have been more understanding, since she is overall a very sympathetic and understanding person). And that irresposible, one track-minded Luo Xuan is given the hero treatment and immediately excepted by his 2 daughters. BTW, I do not think he is a corwardly person, I just think that he follows the society rules too much. He considered it wrong to be with his student, he refuse to continue with the relationship even tough she is pregnant with his child. Lip Siu Fung is not entirely blameless in this situation either. She is too pushy and refuse to let go. If she can let go, her life will be happier. She is the one throw herself at her teacher when he tried to control desire (note: her teacher did love and wanted her though, he just refuse to go against society rules).

Sorry, the first generation I'm talking about is suppose to be 1st + 2nd generation, while the 2nd generation is suppose to be the 3rd generation. I have lump the first 2 generation together as 1 story.

how many episodes are in the original ATV series for the "snow is red"?

I purchase from a vcd seller who sells this atv series in 21 VCDs in dual audio languages of mandarin & cantonese.

Then, I found out later than other vcd seller were selling the same atv series in 40 VCDs instead of 21 vcds.

I think I have purchased a cut shortened version of "the snow is red" in 21 VCDs and also I was missing 1 VCD from the 21 VCDs set of this tv series.

I think the manufacturer who record this tv series have cutted a lot of scenes to shortened into 21 vcds or to 40 vcds because I heard that this atv series have 56 episodes. I think they should have 56 vcds instead of 21 vcds or 40 vcds if there are actually 56 episodes in the original atv series.

Does anyone have episode #9 of the snow is red?

I'm missing this episode #9 because I am missing VCD#9.

I am willing to trade movies I have for episode #9 with other people through streambeaming at http://www.streamload.com .

Please rely to this posting or email me at [email protected] if you are interesting to trade.

Default Luo Xuan's character

I believe most criticisms of Luo Xuan's behavior spring mainly from our cultural standpoint, which views romantic relationships between master/disciple as something that can be acceptable. However, I believe that in the old times, the relationship between a master and a disciple was akin to parent/child (never mind the schizophrenic idea that disciple/disciple could have romantic relationships - shouldn't they be siblings?), and thus "accepting" Xiaofeng would be like a father today "accepting" being married to his own daughter.

Of course there is no way for me to verify this assumption regarding master/disciple relationships, but _if_ that perception is true, that is, that shifu's are really parents, then Luo Xuan's behavior cannot be characterized as irresponsible. Actually, under those circumnstances, building a house for her to live was being responsible. Irresponsible would be to leave her, kick her out, or to commit suicide and leave all of them behind, like he wanted to do when his friend fought him.

The greatest "criticism" that could have been made against him was that his actions - hiding Xiaofeng - stemmed not for a concern for her, but out of his desire to preserve his reputation. I think this is at least debatable. When Luo Xuan's friend found out what happened, Luo Xuan did not deny anything and said it was his fault. Had his friend not fought him and simply left, Luo Xuan's reputation would have been ruined. I do not believe Luo Xuan would have killed him to keep secrecy. It's not something that seems consistent with his character (true, in wuxia stories you never know).

Regarding separating Xiaofeng from her daughters, at that time Luo Xuan's understanding was that Xiaofeng was evil, and of course the scriptwriter(s) did not spare screentime to show us how Xiaofeng was a bad mother, using her own daughters (causing them to have fever) for selfish purposes. If you had been the father of daughters who had a mother with some serious problems, what would you do?

Of course we can say that Luo Xuan is narrow minded, that there is no such "inherently evil" in people. But I would say that from Xiaofeng's actions (poisoning him before his fight) Luo Xuan is justified in being afraid of what might happen to his daughters. If not for their immediate physical safety, at least for their future. He might believe the Chinese proverb that says: "nearer to red, red, nearer to black, black."

Of the many themes of this series, I believe one of them is: love does not yield to passions, but there should be passion in love. Passion being the element not fully under the control of the will of a person. Other theme could be: we all have weaknesses in us beyond our control.

Jiangxue is the embodiment of the first theme. She understands Zhaonan does not love her with passion. She loves Zhaonan with passion, and she understands that such passion cannot be controlled. It "happens." And in her love for Zhaonan, she lets go. She thinks of _his_ happiness. And that is love.

I think it's a little bit weird to say that Zhaonan should have "chosen" Jiangxue. As far as character consistency goes, from the series I get the impression that Zhaonan really liked Xuanshuang. Had the scriptwriter(s) made Zhaonan "choose" Jiangxue, I believe it would have been kinda odd. And probably going against the theme the scriptwriter(s) wanted to show all along: love is not choice based on merit. It has choices on how to love, but the object of love is determined by passion. BTW, I'm not arguing whether this _is true_ in real life or not, I'm arguing based on what I believe the scriptwriter(s) wanted to say. Maybe they didn't want to say anything, and all this analysis is just very entertaining if they ever happen to read it!

To say that Xiaofeng loved Luo Xuan would not be really true given Jiangxue's example. Actually the whole time Xiaofeng was thinking about how she felt, how she was deprived, how her children would make her happy by bringing him back to her, etc, etc.

Undeniably she was hurt and Luo Xuan shares the guilt. But what she had for Luo Xuan was more passion than love.

If there was no such assumption of "shifu being father," then Xiaofeng had a more legitimate reason to demand Luo Xuan act differently, and Luo Xuan would be guilty of self-preservation at the expense of Xiaofeng, i.e., using something false to cover his lack of willingness to be associated with an "evil" person. BTW, supposedly Luo Xuan learnt and accepted from Zhaonan that there is NO distinction of "evil person" because of the small wooden figurines, but still in the end he believed he could not accept Xiaofeng. I don't think it was self-preservation.

Overall, I really liked the series. The writer(s) had something to say and used the character's story and development to say it. I liked the irony in the Blood Cave scene: one wanting to forget, one wanting to remember, each one arguing for his own cause. It poses a very interesting question to me: should we remember? Or should we forget? Maybe the answer is: remember what you ought to remember and forget what you ought to forget.

I liked the poetry of Xiaofeng's love/passion for Luo Xuan. Her first (shown) embrace of Luo Xuan was a faked accident on her part. She had dreams and was hopeful. We could say the dream was true, the embrace was false. Her second embrace of Luo Xuan was her dream come true. The embrace was a true one too. Her last embrace symbolized that her dreams had finally come to an end. The embrace was true, but her dream would remain dream forever.

I groaned when Jiangxue was pregnant. The scriptwriter(s) was(ere) really straining for credibility. Mother and daughter. Both pregnant in one night stand? Not to say it cannot happen, but storywise, it was becoming a "little" repetitive.

I really wished the writer(s) had left Xiaofeng keep the original question she made to Luo Xuan in the end. Her first question was: "Do you really like me or not?" But when Luo Xuan didn't answer, she CHANGED the question: "If there was another chance, would you have chosen differently?" These are two VERY different questions! Wish she had kept the original.

ctway, your post so accurate, love to read it, hehe!!
My dad when he watch this series, he was like " how come all the girl in here got pregnant"?? hehehe!!
Yes, it was odd, the grandma get pregnant, and then Mimi Kung, and then Kristy Yang, all at 1 night stand, "odd"

by the way, you actually think Lou Xuan love XiaoFeng? I honestly think he does.

As for this relationship, I don't really see anything wrong, they not blood related, so you cannot compare it like daughter and father, wrong comparision here, they just different as in a big age gap. But honestly I think they can make it through, if they despite what the whole world say about them and most importantly Lou Xuan self viewpoint.

As for XiaoFeng, you don't thinks she love Lou Xuan, I think she does very much, but he treat her so bad though.

no offend or anything ok, just discussing

ctway, if it was like what you say, then aren't Xiao Long Nu and Yang Gou are consider mom and son??? Cuze what you say, Lou Xuan is can be Xiao Feng dad cause in the back old days, one day of being a teacher can be consider as parent?
Then Xiao Long Nu is Yang Guo mom then, heheh!! but they manage to make it through, why can't Lou Xuan?
yeah, i get the his self viewpoint cannot tollerate that, but if he can, then it would be a much happier ending

i liked this series. i liked how mimi, was searching for her daughters & one was under he nose the whole time. the twins didn`t strike me as twins, they could have gotten actresses to look more alike, but their acting was good. i didn`t like alice too much, she seemed to cry-baby & kristy saved alice from the poison. . by sucking it out.

oiii i hated how mimi died or comiited suicide.

i hated the guys in here, they were dumb. except for that one guy who liked kristy, but she didnt like him. so he went back to the girl we had arranged marriage with. . but his "younger-brother" liked that same girl. . too much love triangles. lol
