Default How do you become a Moderator?

I’m curious, how does one become a Moderator? I’ve noticed that most Mods have been apart of Spcnet for a long time. Is this a paying job or just volunteer work?

I don’t want the responsibility, I’m just simply curious.

Actually, you have to pay spcnet a huge sum of money to become a mod.

    It was well worth it.

And here's the grim-faced serious answer:

Moderators are selected by the Administrator (SPCNET, whom we like to call SC). The current moderators are all first-generation mods, meaning that they are the moderators that SC chose a few years ago when the forum traffic became too heavy and she too busy to personally oversee the forums day-to-day. She therefore selected a group of regular forum members who had a proven track record of good judgment, reliability, and accountability.

The moderator group you see today has been stable and consistent. There has been no substantial turnover and we have not recruited any new moderators for years. There might come a point when SC decides to recruit additional moderators to supplement those who have become too busy in their offline lives to perform their duties, but that's entirely up to SC.

Don't listen to our strange orange.

Once upon a time, when SC our admin had to battle foreigners and have to uphold the land of SPCNET alone, SC out of hundreds of members chose us mods to help maintain the peace and order in this land called SPCNET forum. SC just put up a sign "Moderators wanted" and a few of us had signs that said "Will work for food" and because we're such a lovable bunch, SC took us home and fed us well and we pledged to become mods and annoy the heck out of some spammers and troublemakers in the land. That is the story of how we became mods. Yes, its volunteer work.

Happy with the bedtime story? Then it is by the decree of SC that you all must sleep for a hundred years until a moon is seen in broad daylight.

haha...kudos to you guys for doing it as volunteer work. That takes lot of commitments and dedications on your part. I certainly don’t have the patience or the dedication to engage in something like this.

So take us into the daily life of a Mod. Do you guys hold daily meeting or briefing? How is the “get together” coordinated when there are important issues to discuss, i.e. banning a member or setting new forum policies, etc…

Daily life of a mod? Why? Who wants to know?

If you really want to know, we hold secret meetings in a secret forum only visable to admin & mod eyes. The rest, if you want to know more, I'm afraid you'll have to pay a great price--that is....your life. Next to the FBI and CIA, we're very secretive.

haha...I'm just a no-body that wants to know it all. I have no money and only one life. However, my life is not my own bc i'm under the mob's watch. May you have mercy on my soul and allow me to join your secret society, please? Though, that's only if your daily life is fun. Otherwise, I would rather join the FBI or CIA.

Depends on what you say is fun. We each have a list of members and we check it twice like the man in the red suit to see whose naughty or nice and occasionally draw a name out of a hat and ban the naughty and let the nice live on to the next day or month. Actually we're just here to do custodian work on the forum, clean forums and maintain order in the forums. Thats pretty much it.

    awwww...that’s so unexciting.

OK, my last question for the day ...has there ever been a case where a Moderator got banned?

No. Not that it can't happen, but it hasn't yet. To get picked as a moderator, a forum member needs to show the good judgment and maturity that wins the Administrator's trust. It's difficult to imagine anybody who could be selected as a moderator could actually do something in violation of forum rules. Not impossible, but very unlikely, and to date, has never happened.

There is a Moderators' Forum accessible to the moderators only. We use it when we need to. Sometimes, nothing happens in there for weeks at a time. Other times, we're quite busy. It all depends on what's going on at the forums.

If some kind of action is necessary, it is proposed by one of the moderators. If it is supported by at least one other moderator and is not objected to by the Administrator, we go ahead with it.

In some cases, such as when SPAMmers appear or someone is hellbent on posting obscenity or other unsuitable material, we act immediately.

Makes me wonder how Suet Seung was chosen. I guess spcnet had a off night of drinking.

Well, like your namesake, you need to honestly ask yourself if you don't bring it onto yourself sometimes.
