I always thought they had to play some sort of musical instrument (besides vocal) in order to be counted officially as a band. *shrugs* Perhaps I'm wrong.

That's what I grew up thinking but I guess that has changed! It's sad to see so many untalented bands popping up. Of course there are a few bands w/o any musicality (is that even a word?) and still consider pretty good!

well technically a band is multiple instruments vocals included. so they are band. they are also a choir.
ensembles, choirs, orchestras are subsets of band.

boyband probably was a word used to to make them sound less gay than calling them a 5 man choir.
Beatles were called a boy band, but I don't think they are in the same genre as Nsync backstreeboy etc.
