Except I don't believe Will Smith is deserving this time around, Forest Whitaker and Peter O'Toole were better.

And popularity has very little to do with it, neither Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, nor Harrison Ford ever won any Oscars, and they were/are pretty darn popular at one time or another.

its not a public popularity vote.. but its still subjective becos those who are eligible to vote needs to be a member of the Academy organisation. some actors are a member like Sammuel Jackson.. Cruise, Pitt, Ford maybe popular with the public.. but not necessarily favoured by the members of the Academy awards...

That is true, like how Dame Judi Dench is nominated, yet AGAIN. However, I see no reason to believe that Will Smith is popular with the Academy, or, in any case, more popular than the likes of Peter O'Toole or Forest Whitaker.

hehehe...Net's just trying hard to convince himself that Will Smith has a high chance of winning. Otherwise, huhahaha...

Bellamia, I'd have to say I'm with you on this one. Will Smith's chances of winning are like Keira Knightley's chances last year. I'm sure that Net will be posting an avatar that says 'I worship the ground that Bellamia walks on.'

Hollywood is much more liberal than most of America. That's its reputation, and they have it for a reason. The Academy gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress back in 1939 (which I wouldn't exactly call "recent times"), when blacks still had to drink out of different fountains. But, I digress. Your logic between Will Smith and Hollywood's politics back in the day is once again flawed, but I suppose I won't nitpick anymore.

There are always surprise winners, but the majority of the winners have been predicted ahead of itme. Like take Reese Witherspoon and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who won last year. They both practically swept all of the awards. Undoubtedly, they won at the Oscars. The only significant upset last year was Brokeback Mountain, not that I really minded since I liked Crash better.

this reminds me, what happened to the movie infamous? also about truman capote. i remember the reviews being great, and people said it was better than phillip seymour hoffman's portrayal.

Yeah I've heard that too...about whoever it was who portrayed Truman Capote in that version. As for the lack of nomination, I'm speculating either lack of originality (after all, I guess the Academy didn't feel like giving out two Best Actor awards in a row for portraying the same person) or maybe that Warner independent didn't give Infamous much of a chance and the film just was never considered an Oscar contender by the Academy. Overall, I preferred Capote over Infamous.

Since we're on the topic of the Oscars - SAG Awards just passed by, and "Little Miss Sunshine" took best picture! SAG has been pretty accurate in predicting the best picture winners the last few years (the exception being Million Dollar Baby, but SAG picked Crash last year like the Academy), so is this a hint? "Babel" would be the forerunner (haven't seen it), but I think "Little Miss Sunshine" was one of the best films of the year. Oh yes, Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker both won, along with Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. The chances are not looking good for Will Smith, Net. If he really does win I'm going to laugh anyway, since it's not like I have to display any avatars either way.

A little off-topic, but Julie Andrews won the Lifetime Achievement Award at SAG! I love Julie Andrews - very talented and a gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous voice. Not to mention she's very tall and graceful. Too bad she underwent throat surgery and doesn't have that amazing 4-octave range anymore. Let's just hope LYF (or any Asian untalented singer for that matter) doesn't do any renditions of Julie Andrews' musical theatre repertoire.

Oscars tonight...determines all. I'm actually quite excited to see this year's Oscars, with Ellen DeGeneres hosting

Speaking of Will Smith, I actually really want Leonardo DiCaprio to win. He was so cute back in Titanic and now he's developed into a talented, serious actor.

    Peter O'Toole scoffs at Leo's 0 for 3-ness.

Hmm surprised Eddie Murphy didn't win - but I liked Alan Arkin too. Go Leo!!!! I wouldn't mind if Ryan Gosling won either - why didn't he bring Rachel McAdams with him though?
