I predict that like the Golden Globes, "Babel" would take home the Oscar for Best Picture.

Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, Blood Diamond
Best Actress: Helen Mirren, The Queen
Best Supporting Actor: Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
    Best Animated Feature Film: Cars
Best Directing: Alejandro González Iñárritu, Babel - however, i hope that it would go to Martin Scorsese for The Departed - he's way over due for an oscar.

sorry bella dear... i was lazy to retype the categories and nominations

i dont think its far fetched.. there are quite a few black people in this year's academy awards and Will Smith is quite popular among the academy voters.

I want Will Smith to get best actor because Pursuit of Happyness was a very good movie and he was very very good in it. There were many moments in the movie where he didn't speak but the look on his face and his body language was such that i truly felt that there was no need for words. This is why the ending to me, with him crying does not feel corny. If the movie had been set up any other way then it would have just felt too corny.

ahh, the oscars.....hollywood's annual pompous, self-indulging, masturbatory TV event catering to its overinflated sense of self-importance. it gets better every year

i have to agree with u on rinko. i thought her heartbreaking performance was the best thing in babel, taking into account that the film itself plus her costars were better than average. hope to see her get more international exposure.

have to disagree with u on will smith. while i thought his performance was effective, i don't think he deserves the win. the film was also for the most part, at least to me, dull and contrived.

My picks (being completely unrealistic here)
BEST PICTURE: Little Miss Sunshine (I hate everyone. Basically, the best movie ever!)

BEST ACTOR: Leonardo DiCaprio, Blood Diamond (mmm I love Leo ...he totally deserved a nomination for The Departed as well)

BEST ACTRESS: Helen Mirren, the Queen

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal

BEST DIRECTOR: Martin Scorcese, The Departed

its more of a popularity award ceremony - hence why i put Will Smith down as best actor. IMO all these nominated films would put me to sleep!!!

This year's Oscars aren't very appealing, but I'll be watching anyway. I hope Babel wins best picture.

The category is up there, just not bolded. Curse of the Golden Flower wasn't and doesn't deserve to be nominated.

I just don't see it happening. I thought Will Smith had a great chance of winning an Oscar back in 2001 for Ali, but it did not happen.

I will wager u a if Will Smith wins. What do u say? If Will does win, then it would probably be the biggest upset of the night.

i think the time has changed...after Halle Berry and Denzel Washington taking best actress/actor awards - the floodgate is open for other deserving (and popular) black actors to follow suit.

    don't know

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal

It's not about being black or white. Hollywood's as liberal as you can get. They're not going to discriminate. Not only have Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won the Oscar, but also Jamie Foxx...Hattie McDaniel was nominated for best supporting actress for Gone With the Wind, and that was made in 1939.

That said, I don't think Will Smith is going to win because Forest Whitaker is getting all of the critical acclaim. And he's black too, if that's what you're all concerned about.

By the way, I must add with Halle Berry's win, I personally was rooting for Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge.

I concur...there's Meryl Streep and the Devil Wears Prada, but she's unlikely to win anyway. Plus this year I've been lazy and haven't seen half these films. Last year had better films, and I thought last year sucked. Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Walk the Line...

Hollywood isn't all that liberal Miss Sparky.. it is only in recent times that black actors are getting deserved recognition. In the 80s and 90s, i've only heard of Sidney Pottier winning an Oscar. Maybe there may be a few others..but im lazy to google it.

i don't believe the awards are handed down to the most critically acclaimed. if that was the case, there wouldn't be surprise winners in previous years.

    Predictions
    BEST PICTURE
Letters from Iwo Jima - I'm a sucker for war movies, but why no Flight 93?

    BEST ACTOR
Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland - I would love it if Peter O'Toole wins, but if Forest Whitaker doesn't win, something is seriously wrong.

    BEST ACTRESS
Helen Mirren, The Queen - Not much debate here I suppose. But does this mean the Queen might have to attend?

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls - Seriously, Mark Wahlberg? He played a tough guy from Boston... how does that work?

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls - Why no Best Director at least? Seems like the Academy looks down on the effort and direction it takes to make a good musical.

    BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
    Cars - I guess?

    BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
    Pan’s Labyrinth - W00t!

    BEST DIRECTING
Martin Scorsese, The Departed - Seriously, it's about time. Though, I can see Clint denying Martin again.

Except I don't believe Will Smith is deserving this time around, Forest Whitaker and Peter O'Toole were better.

And popularity has very little to do with it, neither Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, nor Harrison Ford ever won any Oscars, and they were/are pretty darn popular at one time or another.
