Default The return of ELOC --> Exposing Lovable Overlooked Characters

ELOC --> Exposing Lovable Overlooked Characters, has become a favorite wuxia initiative of mine. Over the past 5 - 10 years, Even though it may seem like we have covered almost every possible discussion related to Jin Yong wuxia, there are still overlooked, underrated secondary characters in each of Jin Yong's novels who demonstrated impressive feats, whether martial arts or otherwise, but are rarely ever discussed by readers. This topic aims to expose these overlooked, underrated secondary characters, in order to bring more awareness to their existence, and give those lovable characters more credit for what they've accomplished.

Now, I will focus only on a few characters on the basis of martial arts. Please feel free to Expose more Lovable Overlooked Characters as you see fit.

The purpose of this topic is to remind everyone that SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan is not the only Lovable Overlooked Character in Jin Yong wuxia. There are others who deserve to be recognized! And this topic aims to do just that.

    Smiling Proud Wanderer
    ---
This novel is full of great martial arts performances. One of the rarely discussed characters--perhaps b/c we don't really know anything about his specific martial arts--is Beggar Union Chief Jie Feng. This guy can carve words deeply into wooden pillar using his finger. This is highly impressive with regards to ROCH's martial arts description. And yet, no more words are written about the martial arts of this lovable character Jie Feng. The Beggar Union Chief of SPW only appeared in one scene. No wonder he's overlooked.

[- please insert more impressive overlooked characters -]

    Heavenly Sword & Dragon Sabre
    ---
Two extremely minor characters Hao Mi and Bu Tai, who only appear in one scene in the novel, took the combat scene by storm by outperforming the leaders of the Orthodox AND Unorthodox community. The leaders of the 6 orthodox schools (except for maybe Kongwen and Zhang Sanfeng) could not hope to compete with them, neither could anyone from Ming Cult (except Zhang Wuji of course). Where did they learn their martial arts? Who else have they fought throughout the years? We will never know. But we do know that they are two of the best fighters from HSDS.

The Merit Rewarding/Transmission Elder of the Beggar Union was able to withstand FIVE of Xuanming Elder's Xuanming Divine Palms, while Yang Xiao and Wei Yixiao had trouble withstanding just one palm.

    Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils
    ---
The leader of South Sea, Five Fingers Mountain, Flaming Cave -- Duanmu Yuan, demonstrated full control of a Long Distance SPIT. After the spit left his mouth, Duanmu Yuan changed the direction of this spit in mid-air. Can anyone in Jin Yong wuxia replicate the impressiveness of this LDSpit? I doubt it.

How about LOCH and ROCH? These 2 novels seem to be covered more comprehensively already, but I'm sure there are still overlooked characters.

Here are a few other overlooked and underrated lovable characters from DGSD:

During the fight in Juxian Manor, Xiao Feng was kicking major asses at one point when SUDDENLY, he felt a wave of palm energy coming from behind. This energy was soft but it was abundant enough that Xiao Feng did not dare dismissing it. I.e. Xiao Feng had no choice but to block it, just like later when he fired 2 palms at Xuzhu and Duan Yu the latter 2 were forced to block. Who is this energy transmittor that forced the mighty Xiao Feng to block a stance from? This man, this myth, this prodigy, is someone that most people have only heard in legend. The legendary Zhao Qiansun, it is.

Immediately following Zhao Qiansun's palm clash with Xiao Feng, another man dashed to meet palms with Xiao Feng. Now, realize that anyone who dared to compete with Xiao Feng head on at this point must be pretty dang strong. This man fired 3 palms one after another, each stated to add on to the previous power, in effect sending out a wave of energy equal to 3 single palms. This, I reckon, must be a long distance assault, because of the energy traveling description. What happened as a result? Xiao Feng returned a single palm which neutralized this man's triple assault. Who is this tiny man at Juxian Manor that could fire a triple-powered LDA AND match a single palm from Xiao Feng? As you might have been unable to guess, Grandpa Tan is your man.

I'm wondering if XF palm simply neutralized or over-powered the triple-powered LDA. If it is over-powered instead, then the triple-powered LDA by this Grandpa Tan did not match a single palm by XF, and it will make his feat much less impressive.

Maybe this Grandpa Tan is ELOC = Exaggerated Lovable Overlooked Characters.

The novel did not indicate that Grandpa Tan's triple-powered palm set was overpowered by Xiao Feng's single palm. It just said that the wind produced by the palm clashes forced all the bystanders to retreat back. I find it logical to assume that their palms were evenly matched during that instance.

There was a post a while ago which contained several paragraphs about Zhuo Bufan's amazing swordplay and compassion. It was in fact a hybrid chapter, with, in CC's words, the first half pulled out of his butt and the second half from PJ's, and someone else comparing the style to Gu Long. Can someone post a link to that thread?

    Enjoy SWORD GOD's feats!
Yang Guo & Zhou Botong said in Chapters 6, 11 & 25 of ROCH:
    - 这道姑也算得美了,只是还不及桃花岛郭伯母,更加不及我姑姑。
    - 原来郭伯母竟是这般美貌,小时候我却不觉得。
    - 龙姑娘,我瞧你品貌才智,和那小黄蓉不相上下,武功也跟她差不离。
