Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has got some parents steaming over his racy new stage play role.

One of the publicity photos for the play shows a topless and buffed Radcliffe being hugged by a naked woman. Another shows him leaning against bales of hay as he stares up at the topless woman. A third has him posing in front of a white horse.

The pictures have been released ahead of the opening of Equus, a controversial Peter Shaffer play showing at London's Gielgud Theatre from next month.

Radcliffe,17, plays a troubled stablehand who one night blinds six horses with a hoofpick.

He features in numerous nude scenes with co-star Joanna Christie, the woman in the publicity shots.

The UK's Daily Mail reports that Harry Potter fan sites have received emails from concerned parents.

"We as parents feel Daniel should not appear nude. Our nine-year-old son looks up to him as a role model. We are very disappointed and will avoid the future movies he makes," one parent wrote.

Another said: "I am curious as to how and why his parents said this was okay."

Some of his younger fans, however, are impressed with Radcliffe's tough new look.

"I am completely stunned by these pix," wrote GinnyPotter on fan site danradcliffe.co.uk.

"He is no longer the shy boy in the prefects' bathroom anymore. His body is .... I can't even say or I will no doubt be banned but he has grown a lot and I am very proud of Daniel."

Another wrote: "When I saw it I couldn't breathe for a moment. I was shocked. But [the] pictures are very cool and very good. I like it ... They're awesome!"

The publicity shots were taken between filming of the fifth and sixth Harry Potter movies.

The play's producer, David Pugh, told the Daily Mail that Radcliffe had been rehearsing the nude scenes with Christie for more than a week and had overcome his initial shyness.

The young actor's spokeswoman, Vanessa Davies, said: "Daniel does not want to step away from Harry Potter but he does want to show he is a rounded actor capable of very different and diverse roles."

"He has tremendous support from Harry Potter fans," she said.

frankly, his body is but besides that, i feel really sorry for any kid that thinks "oh, it's Harry Potter, i want to watch that."

i'm really surprised, and seriously, i don't think i can ever look at Harry Potter the same way again

Well the main reason he's doing this play is to prove that he can do other things (and pretty big things too) beside HP. And the lead role in Equus is an extremely demanding role, playing this psychologically disturbed teenager with a sexual obsession with horses. Definitely its not a play that you should watch lightly, I mean, you shouldnt just go to see it because you want a glimpse of him naked. I haven't read the play personally but I've looked at the summaries and analysis for it when the news first came out that he was doing this. It's a pretty heavy play with lots of mature themes and issues.

As for people complaining, of course there will be supporters and people who will complain. But if Dan wants to prove himself as an actor, who's to stop him?

As for will his performance be any good? I don't know. I won't comment since I won't see the play.

He has the right to do whatever he wants...I don't exactly find him attractive when he's naked, but he isn't obliged to conform to what image his fans have given him. I personally wouldn't ever pose nude at a young age like 17, but whatever. It's his own life. Plus I usually have nothing against actors/actresses posing nude if it adds significance to the film.

i think the whole nude thing is just a gimmick for the film and he wanted to show his body off. he did work out really hard for it.

i never did find nude shots attractive but he looks good half naked. i don't mind him changing his roles, if he doesn't then his always going to be stuck in a child's role and can't move on to an adults.

look at all the young actors, how many of them have succeed after they grew up? not that many.

i haven't seen any HP movies, so i don't know if his acting skills. but, he can be a young wolverine with his looks.

btw, he needs to work on his abs. my abs is better than him.

i didn't want to click on any of those pics because i'm not interesting in anything harry potter and i'm especially don't want to see a naked harry potter. *shudders* but, as my bad luck would have it, while i was browsing yahoo news, the pics were all down the right hand side on the front page.

As the JAMES BOND, STAR WARS (Harrison Ford excepted), and SUPERMAN actors know, that's going to be tough. It comes with the territory of portraying not merely movie characters, but (popular) cultural icons.

i actually think he's too young to be doing this. 17 years old- he's not even an "adult" yet. Versatile roles are all very well, but i think he's making too quick a transition, and perhaps this should come after the HP films- it's like "kiss with Cho" --> naked

i absolutely agree there. I like the slimmer, muscular type, as opposed to the Daniel Radcliff "here i am getting broader and broader and now i just look stunted and awfully short" body
