Default Why didn't Deun Yu head home to Dali after being insulted by Pau But Tung?

It's hard to imagine Deun Yu voluntarily leaving Wong Yu Yin's side, but that's exactly what he did on that one occassion after Pau But Tung wouldn't stop insulting him. Despite his infatuation with Wong Yu Yin, Deun Yu couldn't stomach being constantly insulted by Pau and just left.

Deun Yu was in Goo Soo at the time, and after parting ways with Wong Yu Yin, Pau But Tung, Ah Chu, and Ah Bik, he wandered farther north to Gong Nam, where he met Kiu Fung.

Why didn't Deun Yu head home to Dali instead of wandering so far north? This was the second occassion in which he had left home, but unlike the previous occassion, his departure from home the second time was involuntary. He had been kidnapped by Kau Mor Tze at the Celestial Dragon Temple and taken to Goo Soo; he had not left Dali of his own volition.

If he wasn't going to follow Wong Yu Yin around, then logically, he would have headed home to Dali. Why did he aimlessly wander until he got as far north as Gong Nam?

Er, he didn't. After leaving Wang Yuyan in Lake Tai, he met Xiao Feng at Wuxi, which is pretty much on the northern coast of the lake. What led him to the Pine Crane Inn (and XF) was "the aroma of meat caramelising in soya sauce" (typical Duan Yu sensuality) so perhaps he intended to satiate his hunger before heading back southwest. [This is all 2e.]

    Geographically:

    1. Jiangnan 江南 (Gong Naam) = literally "south of the River"; refers to an area in the lower Changjiang (Long River) valley, including southern Jiangsu and Anhui, as well as northern Zhejiang in modern-day China.

    2. Gusu 姑苏 (Gu Sou) = a city on the banks of Lake Tai 太湖 (Taai Wu) in the Province of Jiangsu. Known today as Suzhou 苏州 (Sou Jau).]

    3. Wuxi 无锡 (Mou Sek) = another city on the banks of Lake Tai.

    Interesting.

In any case, Deun Yu was a long way from Dali, wasn't he? Did he cover most of that distance during the time that he was in Kau Mor Tze's custody, or did he cover most of the distance after leaving Madame Wong's Man Tor Manor?

After Jiumozhi abducted Duan Yu from the Temple of the Celestial Dragon, they travelled north for about 10 days before they left the boundaries of Dali. Then, more than 30 days later, they arrived in Gusu. The total time that elapsed (i.e. more than 40 days since the abduction) was stated in Chapter 11 (updated in the 3rd ed).

Mrs Wang's manor was also located on the shores of Lake Tai, a little more than 4.5 'li' (2.25 km) from Dwelling of the Brocade Many-Stringed Zither, the small building from which Duan Yu, A'Zhu and A'Bi escaped Jiumozhi.

The "Dwelling of the Brocade Many-Stringed Zither" was called "Dwelling for Listening to the Rain" in the 2nd ed.
