    Default Becoming Jane [Austen]

Basically- fictional biography of Jane Austen's romances starring Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen. Personally, i'm not extremely impressed by this casting, but i'm interested in watching the film, so will bypass this on this occasion.

That poster, to me, is almost a clone of the Pride and Prejudice 2006 Keira Knightley version. Seriously, i thought i clicked the wrong link for a split second.

    Some more:

I feel like they're going to over-dramatise it. Austen, though individual, is not quite a Lizzy.

Edit: a must for the film- the creaking of the door to alert her that someone was coming so that she could hide away her writing.

Looks interesting, I wouldn't be surprised if they took plots or scenes from Jane Austen's stories and make it as her "real life experiences" or fantasies. It's sorta looks like what they did with the Shakespeare in Love movie. Where I don't think most of what happened in it really happened especially the part of him falling in love like so, I remember learning about Shakespeare's life and the movie wasn't close at all.

However, I'll probably watch this too because I'm interested in how creative the scriptwriters are for this movie. Although, I have a feeling it will be quite predictable. I hope I'm wrong.

    I can't see the pictures

But I think it will be interesting to see a movie on Jane Austen's life, though I'm a little confused at the casting. For one thing, Anne Hathaway is American. Why can't they find a British actress to play the part? But nationality aside, I still am a little confused and don't think that Anne fits the role. But Maggie Smith is in it, that is a plus and I look forward to seeing her performance rather than Anne's.

Now you can see how it's reminiscent of the new 06 P&P. Although Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley don't look all that similar, the effect on the cover is very similar. Just for comparison, side by side:

I actually quite like Keira Knightley- i find her a very attractive and charismatic actress and although her Lizzy is not as "faithful" being part of a Hollywood adaptation, i thought she did a good job. Anne Hathaway IMO has a very odd face- it's pretty but strangely proportioned.

Ok, maybe i'm biased against her playing Jane Austen because i remember seeing her naked in Brokeback Mountain.

I'd be more interested if this was a BBC production- but BBC hasn't been known to always produce "faithful" films. If anyone's seen Pandaemonium, which is about S.T. Coleridge and William Wordsworth, they portray Wordsworth as a villain and they portray him as being challenged in terms of literacy as well:

ie. Wordsworth: "i wandered, lonely as a cow."
Dorothy: "I think CLOUD would be a better word here."

You might recognise this to be one of wordsworth's most famous poems, Daffodils.

So long as they don't make Austen challenged in this aspect, and don't change her into a total Lizzy, i'll be fine. I think fans of P&P really need to see that Austen actually accepted a proposal, though she later rejected it.

I'm not sure if they'll treat the film as just her younger, "romantic" days (script writers whim), or if they'll go into any detail as to her older years (28 accepting the proposal) and her illness that caused her death.

Maybe the person who made the poster/cover for P&P was asked to do Becoming Jane, that would explain the similar style. Come to think if it, Tuck Everlasting with Alex Bledel had the same template style.

Yeah, Anne Hathaway she's not always photogenic. Her nose, eyebrows and lips and maybe even the shape of her face sometimes look weird.

I love Tuck Everlasting. And the book. Both are wonderful. So meaningful.

I lovve the part in the movie where Jesse goes, "Winnie Foster, I will love you for as long as I live!" or something along those lines.

Alexis Bledel looked so doll-like and demure back then. I like how she looks now better though. More stylish and chic.

The plan now is to release it March 9 in Britain first, so I guess we can hear those reviews...then March 29 for Australia. August 3 for USA, and probably sometime around that for Canada.

About the casting, I actually rather like Anne Hathaway and I admire how she's changing from a kid-friendly actress to a serious one. Her features are more striking than most actresses'...I think she's more suited for being a theatre actress, actually. She has a beautiful voice. However, Jane Austen is a British icon, and my main concern for Anne is the accent. She did a good job in Brokeback Mountain, but we'll see if she can maintain the British authenticity. Nevertheless, I have more faith in Anne than most of you here. She's not a bad actress, and I'll trust the casting people on this one. It's better to find an American that can perform the role well, rather than just casting someone British for the sake of being British. After all, Vivien Leigh was an English actress, but her performance as Scarlett in Gone with the Wind (along with other American Southern belles) was nothing short of exceptional.

Article on what is being done in Becoming Jane

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/3982675a1870.html

    Some comments from critics:

Despite the fact that this is a beautifully-shot, dryly funny period drama, some audiences might prefer to stick to the sheer escapism of Austen's fictional work, which follows a similar formula.

Something of a disappointment, thanks to some dreary photography and a boring, unimaginative script that completely wastes a talented supporting cast.

Austen’s fans will recognise something of the author’s playful wit in the film, and forgive the dramatic liberties.
(i hope this opinion is true)

I just can't see Anne as Jane, i categorized her acting amateur. in PD, BbM, DWP is still that terrible excitement in her face like some kid getting dropped in neverland. she's a beautiful girl but there are many like her. i don't know if they are doing Jane a favor or a dishonor by making this. I have my reservations on whether to see this movie or not. critics are nailing it mellow.
