Are you sure about that? From my observation, Asians like fluffy pop music the most and black music.Originally Posted by Demonic Swordsman

Same here. I think it senseless and meaningless to categorise music anyway. First of all, all genres are interlinked. Secondly of all, you either like a song or you don't --- and I don't think it has much to do with genre.Originally Posted by strawberry
I don't agree. Songs do have a particular sound that can be categorized and grouped. When you hear Madonna, you can tell that it's not heavy metal right? Therefore, you just categorized a song into a genre. When I say that I like alternative music, it doesn't mean that I'm limited to that genre alone. I like all kind of music but I tend to like alternative. If I listen to a bunch of songs of all genre, there's a good chance that the songs that I like are alternative and those that I don't like are Hip-hop. I don't choose it to be that way, it happens to be that way.Originally Posted by Guo Xiang

Despite having initialized this poll with categorized genres, I actually agree with you about the disadvantages of lumping music into genres. However, I believe it's only recently when a large variety of music has began to transcend the boundaries of genres. But even now, MOST music remain genre music.Originally Posted by Guo Xiang
I for one am not a fan of black and white classifications, but I do recognize its role in society. People classify food into Chinese, Italian, Japanese, African etc. Yes, there can be some overlaps, such as a hybrid meal of kababs and french fries (which is common in Europe). But for the most part, food can be classified into one or two primary categories. The labeling is necessary for easy look-up. Customized / personalized items are harder to communicate.
Guo Xiang, you say that you either like a song or not, and that it doesn't have much to do with genres. Well, I can tell you from experience that of the genres that I don't particularly care for, I like maybe 2% of their songs. The genres that I do like, I like maybe 50% of their songs. That is a big difference. Your musical preferences can and will translate into genre preferences.

Alternative is soothing and nice?!? Really? I never thought about alternative music that way. To me, alternative is often depressing and sometime political. Are you sure we're talking about the same thing?Originally Posted by big master

I wouldn't classify linkin park as rock. it's somewhat alternative. rock would be led zeppelin, queen, aerosmith type.
I like most genres of music myself. I don't like much pop music. I guess after MJ I didn't really have much interest in pop. R&B is ok, hiphop or any latin stuff I don't like too much. Not really into rap, but I don't mind eminem and old school rap like Run DMC. I don't really like country music either.
But everything else listed up there, I quite enjoy listening to.
I seriously can't choose. I love R&B, Hip-hop and Pop.

The thing is, rock is way too broad and shouldn't have been on the list. Rock music has many subgenres such as hard-rock, heavy-metal, progessive rock, punk rock, alternative rock, grunge, Britpop and indie rock, etc. At the same time alternative is also on the list and punk rock, alternative rock, grunge, Britpop and indie rock are all classified as alternative. So rock covers too much, I would have put classical rock instead; rock that is more mainstream like progessive rock, hard rock and heavy metal.Originally Posted by KeongJai
