Default Wan Chung Hok and Tam Ching at Tsui Yin Manor - why?

The Tsui Yin Manor affair was all about Kiu Fung pleading with Dr. Sit to heal Ah Chu's injury, and the wulin members gathered at the manor taking their turns trying to kill (and getting killed by) Kiu Fung. It was basically Kiu Fung vs. Chinese wulin in a free-for-all.

In the middle of all this, Deun Yin Hing's student Tam Ching showed up and was killed by Kiu Fung, and then Wan Chung Hok himself appeared and was seriously wounded by Kiu Fung as well before slinking away.

That interlude was just odd. Obviously, Tam Ching and Wan Chung Hok weren't in with the other wulin people. As an associate and a member of the Four Evils, they were every bit as much pariahs in wulin as Kiu Fung himself was at the time (even more so, perhaps, because at least Kiu Fung had previously been a hero and a respected Beggar's Union Chief). The Four Evils, at that point, had no real "beef" with Kiu Fung; their enemies were just the Deun Family of Dali.

Tam Ching and Wan Chung Hok's brief appearance didn't seem to have any point in the Tsui Yin Manor incident. The only effect was to give Kiu Fung a chance to easily manhandle Wan Chung Hok and again demonstrate how powerful his martial arts were. Aside from that, the appearance of Tam and Wan had no meaning at all.

I have no idea, but I think this might be the case:

The only effect was to give Kiu Fung a chance to easily manhandle Wan Chung Hok and again demonstrate how powerful his martial arts were. Aside from that, the appearance of Tam and Wan had no meaning at all.

Although there were 40+ warriors with better actual martial arts than Evil #4, none could do anything to him due to his speed. He was about to get away, and Qiao Feng threw a LDA to critically injure him, saving the face of the central plains once again (who were trying to kill Qiao). It's one of the many paradoxes in story.

The Four Great Evils were usually more purposeful and specific in their goals. There was usually a method to their madness; they generally didn't just go and start random crap with people they had no quarrel with.

Yes, after many years, I still think this was a rather forced plot point: Jin Yong wanted Qiao Feng to shine in front of everyone, saving their face when they couldn't solve the problem. But the fact is Jin Yong needed some evil dude to be the troublemaker and LDA victim. Instead of coming up with a new arbitrary villain, he opted to use the Great Evils.

    That's what I think anyway.

I agree that the plot point was for the Central Plains wulin to see that they had to 'rely' on XF to solve their problems.

To help fit in the plot, the 2 goons could have been there because :

    1. To instigate the crowd in order to ensure that XF gets killed. It would be to the advantage of both the Xixia Kingdom and to the 4 Evils if XF is not there to present a future threat to their plots.

    2. It was a big wulin meeting after all. It would not be unusual that they would want to eavesdrop and report back to Evil #1. With their qinggong, they probably thought that they would be pretty safe.

    2. The guys were cruising for chicks as usual.

With all the above : I think its not very unusual for them to have been present.

I am more interested in the following :

    1. How many of Shan Zhen's sons were actually at Ju Xian Manor? How many died? Did any of his 200+ students turn up too?

    2. Who delivered the invitation to FAST SABRE Qi Liu? Where was his hometown? How long did he travel to get to Ju Xian Zhuang? Did he come with anybody? Did anybody mourn his death? Who buried him? What happened to his precious sabre?
