Why do you dislike Duan Yu?

This question popped up while I was reviewing some material in preparation for new work on the annotation of DGSD. While there are obviously more things to like about say, Xiao Feng, than Duan Yu, I was quite surprised to find that there aren't that many things that are unlikeable about Duan Yu.

So this is the purpose of this thread: to find out the top reasons for disliking Duan Yu, and (hopefully) to consider if these reasons can be justified. If you vote for any of the last 3 options, please provide an explanation in the thread. Thanks!

I picked "He was too obsessed with Wang Yuyan."
he seriously stalked her around constantly- and why WYY of all people? He is another one of those "look, MWQ, wait no, look, Zhong Ling, no wait look, WYY"

Another thing i disliked was the fact that he had such good wugong bestowed upon him and he was too dumb to do anything with it!

From what I know about the 2nd edition of DGSD, i dislike Duan Yu because he's not a faithful man. he met Zhong Ling first and had a romantic sentiment towards her, then after the incident caused by Duan Yanqing, Duan Yu made a promise of marrying Zhong Ling. Later on, he met Mu Wanqing and those 2 fell in love with each other. Duan Yu even swore with the mountains and seas as witnesses that he'd never betray her love. Nevertheless, when he first heard Wang Yuyan's voice at the Cui Yan Manor, he forgot everything that he had promised to Zhong Ling and Mu Wanqing, and since then he'd totally become a dumbass who tagged after Wang Yuyan calling Wang guniang this Wang guniang that all the time, pshh.

I don't blame him for loving Wang Yuyan, only that I dislike his unfaithfulness.

He is filial.

He is benevolent.

He is trustful.

He never boasts or have airs of being rich.

He is smart.

He is religious and kind.

He values love, and understands that to truly love someone is to wish that they are happy, even if you may be miserable as a result.

He neither seeks or desires fame.

I never go the impression that he had too much romantic sentiments towards ZL. He killed the thought of MWQ & ZL when he found out they were "sisters"...by the time he found out the truth, it was too late, so i don't blame him. but i suppose he never really "loved" them that much either. he seemed much more devastated when he found out that WYY was his "sister". so i actually consider duan yu quite faithful (and it isn't just because we have his "dad" in comparison)

i admit though, his obsession was a bit freaky, or perhaps it was just the nature of man .

but at the end of DGSD the 2nd edition, after everything was cleared up by his Mom, why didn't he marry Zhong Ling n Wanqing? were his previous promises to them just as cursory as a breeze?

I thought he did marry them, didn't he? Hadn't Dao Bai Feng said something like in DaLi, it is possible to marry your cousins. Maybe he did, but it just wasn't explicitly stated.

I thought it was clarified to the general public that nothing happened between DY & ZL (esp after it was revealed that they were "siblings"). it also seemed that MWQ herself had accepted the "fact" that DY was her "brother" and seemed to be somewhat "over" him.

and speaking of keeping promises...GJ once agreed to marry princess Hua Zhen. now shall be blame him for going back on his words?

i think someone said it before... the girls before WYY he thought they were his sister... now even if you love your sister would u marry them? at the end it was a few year or two have passed till he realized they ain't his sisters but that's kindda too late... feelings comes and go...

Not only that the girls before WYY he didn't really love them... it was more of a "nice guy" trying to make the girls happy and didn't want to disapoint them...

as for the stalking goes... he didn't really stalk her as much as pushing the situation to be with her... the world in the novel is a bit different from our world... maybe it wouldn't be that bad in that situation

however if i was WYY's cousin i would kill his *** for stalking my girl friend very early in the novel hehe... that fool was just being dumb.

as far as the larva pit situation.. i'm sure unless he got to save WYY at the same time as saving you and he got to pick one... then he'll let ur *** burn for sure... other than that if he can save you he'll probably would... the guy is nice... although u can't really blame him... put urself in his shoe... choose "pretty gf" vs "some fool i don't know"...

I actually like Duan Yu, but come on, he is a stalker. That is just creepy. Just replace DY with someone ugly. Someone please put a 100 feet restraint on Duan Yu.

Yes, that's actually how I feel too.

I also would criticise his stalker behavior towards Wang Yuyan. Don't see why he bothered. He should've just let Wang Yuyan spend her life taking care of her mad cousin to see the fruit of her worship of her cousin (I can't stand cousinly/interfamilial love).
