Default The Martial arts level of Jie Feng / Xie Feng

Jie Feng (correct spelling: Xie Feng), the Beggar's Union chief in the Smiling Proud Wanderer era --> how good is his martial arts? Judging from the following 2 (brief) implications plus a platform-wide observation, I think his martial arts may be on a similar level as Abbot Fangzheng and Ren Woxing.

Evidence #1: Jie Feng can write on wood with his finger as profoundly as Abbot Fangzheng.

Evidence #2: In chapter 34, Yue Buqun said: "My martial arts cannot compare to the likes of Abbot Fengzheng, Priest Chongxu, and Chief Jie Feng." By lumping Jie Feng with the 2 superpowers of the era, Yue Buqun was suggesting that Jie Feng is on a similar level as those 2.

Now, my personal observation is that the Beggar's Union Chief in most eras is on a similar level as the Shaolin abbot (except when the chief is a leading character). In pre-DGSD, Wang Jiantong should be on par with Abbot Xuanci, seeing how they both led the assassination of Xiao Yuanshan. In ROCH, Lu Youjiao is probably as bad as the Shaolin abbot. In HSDS, Shi Huolong should be near the level of Cheng Kun, who is near the level of Abbot Kongwen. In Ode to Gallantry, nothing about the Beggar's Union is known. Only in LOCH and present-DGSD, when the chiefs are central characters, are they more powerful than Shaolin abbot. Since Jie Feng only made one appearance in the novel, by association he belongs to the list of chieves whose martial arts are on par with the Shaolin abbot.

Ah, but Ren Woxing never mentions him when he discusses the people he admires; even Chong Xu, he admired by a 'half' for his high level of martial arts, but he didn't think Chong Xu could beat him.

Though I suppose Xie Feng might've been one of the remaining two and a half that he holds in contempt, along with Zuo Lengchan; perhaps Xie Feng's moral character was actually quite poor?

I wonder how much of the Dog Beating Stick Technique and the Hong Lung 18 Palms remained by the time of SPW. Without these two skills, the prestige of the Beggar's Union Chief is sunk.

Probably, Jie Feng is slightly below Chongxu, I think that is likely.

Yeah, considering that Jie Feng was secretly fathering illegitimate children who resided in his organization.

his martial arts were good but he was actually below ZLC. the highest in skills among the 'elders' was like this.

    1st: Abbot Fangzheng.
    2nd: rev chongxu.
    3rd: Zuo Lengchan.
4th: Qiankun One Sword Zhenshan Zi/ xie feng.
    5th: five mountain leaders.

I'm curious if those even still existed. Dog Beating Stick has the policy that it can only be verbal taught, no writings whatsoever. This was proven when HR was teaching Lu Youjiao. In other words, unless Shi Huolong taught the 36 Stance Dog Beating Stick to someone, the Dog Beating Stick was lost when he died. Likewise, unless Shi Huolong has a disciple or somesort, XL12Z was also likely lost in the death.

The Beggar's Union had an official designated as the "Skills Transmission Elder" (which could also be interpreted as "Rewards Granting Elder") whose job was specifically to pass down the skills of Dog Beating Stick Technique and Hong Lung 18 Palms should the Beggar's Union Chief be lost unexpectedly without having passed down those skills.

I doubt it because in DGSD the Skills Transmission Elder didn't know both XL28Z or Dog Beating Skills. XF had to personally teach it to XZ. Furthermore, in HSDS, the Skills Transmission Elder over there didn't use XL18Z or Dog Beating Sticks when he was fighting 1 of the Xuan min Elders. Lastly, when HR fought the beggar elders in LOCH, none of the elders were able to immediately recognize that HR was using Dog Beating Stick. It wasn't until that HR was kicking butt that they believed HR knew the Dog Beating Stick. In other words, the Skills Transmission Elder most likely didn't know it either.

the skills transmission elder's job is to teach the skills of begger clan to the lower ranked members, like the formation skills and rod skills. HL18Z and dog beating skill is passed down from leader to leader only. HL18Z was supposed to exist in HSDS from both the wu family desendents who had the skill recorded down but could only reach half power in execution and could not master the essence well enough to use in battle. one of the begger elder used HL18Z to fight the xuan ming elder, he had mastered 12 out of 18 HL18Z. but this may have changed in later editions. HL18Z should still have been passed down since there was no rule about not recording down HL18Z. only dog beating skill has the oral teaching rule and lady yang would have though shi huolong's daughter so the skill should still exist by SPW. but the leader themselves were not of the 'great' calibre so the full power of the skills is not shown and the reputation of the skills has gone down since no one has seen the amazing power of the two skills for along time.

OK, now on to the HSDS era's Beggar's Union. This era, I find, may have the most capable bunch of beggars relative to their peers, in any Jin Yong novel! In DGSD, the beggar elders were all 7th, 8th tier fighters, and would be defeated/killed by Qiao Feng in one stance or so. But in HSDS, there are several exceptions that make the beggar leaders seem much more impressive:

-Eight-armed Swordsman Fang Dongbai, a former beggar elder, was a 3rd tier fighter who was superior to the top Shaolin experts.

-The Merit-Rewarding Elder withstood 5 palm clashes with Xuanming Divine Palm, while Yang Xiao and Wei Yixiao could not withstand one palm. This means the Merit-Rewarding Elder was probably of a higher calibre than the top Ming Cult experts.

In fact, it seems those 2 elders could be superior to the Chief Shi Huolong!

don't forget that ZWJ also praised the Beggar Elders of their skills. You can definitely say that the Elders earned ZWJ's respect.
