Default Which Asian pop singer's singing can be described as *soulful*?

Back in the days when pop music in the United States was largely divided along racial lines, it was commonly believed that only people of African descent could sing soul music. Obviously, that was something of a racist idea...and was disproven after the 1950s with the emergence of so-called "blue-eyed soul" singers such as Elvis Presley, the Righteous Brothers in the 1960s, and right up through Hall and Oates and George Michael in the 1970s and 1980s.

Asian pop is largely derivative of Western styles, but few Asian singers (especially in recent decades) are known for having powerful, soulful voices. Which Asian pop singers do you think can actually sing soul music convincingly?

    My picks:

    Paula Tsui Siu Fung

    Anita Mui Yim Fong

    Jenny Tseng (Yan Lei)

    Frances Yip Lai Yee

Not that any of the four ladies would give Aretha Franklin a run for her money, but I think they would be the closest that East Asia has come to producing any soul singers.

And I can't think of a single Asian male vocalist who can really sing soul.

Kevin So is alright, I just recently heard him live since he's in the Boston Area.

I wouldn't call him soul, but he's as close as a good asian male singer I can think of that can do soul.

I would give A Mei from Taiwan. She has a decent range with a powerful voice ( or at least what you can get from taiwan these days).`

    Male singers that are soulful:

    Dave Wang Chieh (Wong Kit)
    Johnny Ip (Yip)
    Chang Z Chen
    David Tao
    Harlem Yu
    Chou Ge
    Danny Summer
    Justin Lo
    Alex To

    Female singers:

Note: I don't think Jenny Tseng and Frances Yip are that soulful but they are brilliant singers.

    More soulful female singers:

    Teresa Carpio
    Maria Cordero
    Elisa Chan
    Julie Sue (Su Rui)
    Amei

I listened to the youtube video, interesting I wished there is more uprise of ABC's albums in the U.S or any Asian descent. I do know Wal-Mart started putting Jay chou music on their store shelves, but I am not sure other stores.

Toshinobu Kubota, why? He sleep, eats, breathe soul! Singers nowadays are going on the trend to be soulful because of record sales. But Toshi has been doing it since early 1980! He has also work with prominent soul artists such as, Raphael Saddiq, Angie Stone, Caron Wheeler, Alison Williams, and The Roots Ahmir Thompson. So he's quite recognized in the soul community for an Asian.

Pathetic attempts on being soulful? Half of the Korean singers out there. I love Wheesung though.

Heres a sample of Toshi if you guys are curious as to who he is!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBhJ1qMucGU

    - This is a song called, "Keep Holding You". Performed by Toshinobu Kubota & Sunmin live. Great performance from both!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV1EdRGiPI8

    - The song is called Candy Rain, one of his all time classic. This is one of the best Live version I've seen, the melody, the mood, the atmosphere is overwhelmingly immersive (What the? The spellcheck refuse to accept "Immersive" as a word...).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHugWXF2lPU

    - And lastly this is the song the made him a household name. Circa 1996, it was the theme song for the popular Japanese drama called, "Long Vacation". Still one of my favorite "Happy Moments" song.

This is what I remembered about Coco Lee singing, "A love before time", for Crouching tiger, Hidden Dragon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wjM97USckI

Well, Coco is in R&B... but.. sometimes her voice is a bit weaker..

nevertheless she can be soulful compared to plastic BoA and twins
